The Best of Both Worlds

A feat of instrument design, the SunSyn is a fantastically complex-in-all-the-right-places labor of love from German synthmaker JoMoX. Released in 1999, it can be considered in simple terms as an 8-voice polyphonic analog/digital hybrid, or in a more adventurous way as 8 discrete modular mono synths. Each voice is outfitted with 2 true analog oscillators capable of saw, square, or pulse with PWM, and 2 guided digital oscillators with hundreds of waveforms and custom sample support.

Shape-Shifter

The filter section is equally impressive, with a morphable 4-pole true analog filter with discrete control over each pole's cutoff frequency. But maybe the most groundbreaking aspect is the modulation matrix. In spirit it's much closer to that of larger modular analog systems, allowing 4096 possible routings per element, 4 elements per voice, all done in the analog domain. But unlike fully analog systems the modulation routings here can be quickly made through an interactive matrix and saved in patch memory for instant recall.

Resurrecting a Sun

Working with such a complicated instrument has its challenges, especially given its age and limited production. Many parts for the SunSyn are extremely rare and almost impossible to source. In our case, to complete the servicing and refurbishment our tech had to purge parts from a second unit. An expensive and somewhat painful process but worth it in the end, as our sound designers headed off to work on a fully-restored and perfectly calibrated instrument with factory-spec parts.

Deep Sound Design

Sound design possibilities on the SunSyn are nearly endless, and the results of our process with it are evident. From massive, rich, and evolving polysynth sounds created in multi-mode, to devastating and aggressive monosynth sounds utilizing modulations of both analog oscillators, the digital RCOs, and filter morphing. We designed and recorded hundreds of multisampled soundsets, ending with a curated selection of 420 layers, delivering what we think represent the most unique, charactered, and sometimes epic, sounds possible on this machine.

Professional Presets

Bass, Bells, Brass, FX, Keys, Leads, Native Sequences, Organ, Pads, Percussive, Plucks, Polysynth, Strings, Sweeps, Voices, Waveform Analog, Waveform Digital, over 450 all-new + custom designed presets are available, built from a library of 30,660 authentic hardware samples. All presets are fully-editable, meaning you can deeply customize them or even create your own. And the dual-layer architecture of PX SunBox allows you to easily create incredible layered tones from any combination of the included sounds.

Fully-Editable Architecture

PX SunBox gives you a deep and capable toolset for creating and editing patches. From the dual-layer architecture with ADSR amp envelopes, multimode filters with envelope, poly or mono modes with glide, pitch shifting and advanced stereo modes, and handy modwheel mappings, to LFO and step modulators, two feature-rich arpeggiators, and a generous selection of high-quality effects including 3-band EQ with sweepable crossover, drive, Thorus, ensemble, Phasor, digital delay, and Sparkverb.

UVI Focus | Thorus - Polyphase Modulator

video by UVI

https://www.uvi.net/thorus

"Delivering exceptionally deep modulation and an amazingly clear and detailed sound, Thorus is a versatile, easy-to-use effect with modern controls and a fast and intuitive interface.

https://www.uvi.net/thorus

Thorus evolved in our pursuit of the perfect chorus algorithm. Building on a state-of-the-art chorus model combined with advancements made in the development of Sparkverb and Falcon, Thorus can create exceptionally deep modulation with an amazingly clear and detailed sound. Combine that with an attractive and easy-to-use interface and you’ve got a very compelling candidate for your next high-quality, go-to modulator.

More Voices, More Choices
As opposed to a typical 2 or 4-voice chorus implementations Thorus is designed around a variable 8-voice architecture, allowing both subtle and extreme modulation with exceptional transparency throughout the entire parameter range. Use 2 voices for more pronounced modulation or crank it up to 8 to blur the lines for a thick and immersive effect.

Reflexive Refinement
In addition to providing dynamic voice control Thorus includes a number of filtering tools that can be used to further refine your sound. A simple click-drag in the visualizer allows you to tame or boost highs, filter lows to keep the bass tight or add a harmonic edge to your sonic profile to help it stand out in the mix.

Multi-Mode
Thorus provides two operational modes; ‘Standard’ provides a typical sound stage reflective of the input material, where ‘Wide’ results in an expanded stereo image that can be utilized to tremendous effect. Create immersive, mind-bending sounds and freely move through them with the Speed and Depth controls.

Creature Comforts
Thorus included presets provide starting points suitable for a wide range of material from synths and drums to acoustic instruments, guitar or vocals. An A/B preset comparison switch and effect mix control allow for no-risk experimenting and easily dialing in the perfect amount of sonic mojo on your tracks.

Evolution of a classic
A classic effect with a long history, chorus modulation isn’t often regarded as being particularly innovative however, with Thorus we’ve attempted to push that needle. The result is a versatile, easy-to-use and stunningly lush effect that offers a clarity and depth unlike any other.

UVI PX Memories based on the Lintronics Memorymoog

UVI PX Memories | Trailer

UVI PX Memories | Overview

via UVI

"Iconic, renowned, and arguably one of the sweetest sounding and most powerful analog synthesizers, PX Memories takes a deep-dive into the Lintronics LAMM. Based on the last and most ambitious of its makes polyphonic synths before going bankrupt in 1987, its development seems to have been incomplete, with a reputation for unstable tuning and difficult system navigation, and a subsequent Plus model with only basic MIDI implementation.

Taking this beast the final mile and making it the rock-solid road-worthy dream machine it was intended to be is Rudi Lindhard's Lintronics, a synthesizer repair and mod shop based in Germany, who developed this comprehensive system modification over 6 years. Those lucky enough to come by a LAMM will find the iconic six-voice sound to be stable, more easily editable, with improved IO, an enhanced stereo output, a world-class MIDI implementation making most all of the front panel controls transmit and be responsive to control change messages, and much more.

The ultimate version of an incredible and exceedingly rare instrument, we're both honored and excited to be able to present you with the iconic and inspirational sounds of the LAMM.

Starting with a pristine, fully-serviced LAMM, our sound design team created a huge range of custom sounds covering everything from classic to modern genres, creative arps, effects, modulating soundscapes and more, providing a huge range of inspirational sounds.

Every patch we designed for PX Memories was extensively multisampled in normal, factory unison, and the special LAMM stereo unison modes letting you seamlessly switch between real hardware samples, and subsequently allowing you to play unison modes polyphonically which is impossible on the hardware unit.

Another massive creative advantage of PX Memories is the ability to load two programs at once, with full expressive control over each. Each program in PX Memories functions as its own layer, essentially giving you another entire LAMM that can be layered, filtered, animated, and arpeggiated together (or discretely) to create truly massive analog sounds. As well, unison settings are per-program, so combined you can essentially have up to 36 authentic hardware analog voices sounding per note.

In the end we recorded over 38,980 samples, packing PX Memories with a whopping 353 presets made from 171 programs, and divided into 16 categories, including basics, animated arps, animated steps, bass, bells, brass, chords, FX, keys, leads, organ, pads, pluck, polysynth, strings and more. Every patch in PX Memories is fully-customizable allowing you to use them straight-away or as starting points for your own sound design.

PX Memories presents you with a full suite of controls to tweak and augment its sound to fit your particular use, including per-program multimode filter, amp and filter envelopes, pitch and stereo controls, handy modwheel assignments, step and lfo modulators, versatile arpeggiators, and a master effect section with 3-band EQ, drive, Thorus, ensemble, Phasor, delay and Sparkverb.

The LAMM is a rare and iconic instrument with a timeless analog sound, inspiring, versatile, effortlessly delivering thundering bass, rich leads, and massive pads; perfect your analog dreams with PX Memories."

UVI Introduces UVX670 - Akai VX600 & AX73 Sample Based Soft Synth

Published on Jul 10, 2019 UVI

Intro price $49, down from $79.

"With UVX670 we're heading back in time to the '80s to deep-dive, layer and combine sounds from two unique, underrated analog gems from Japanese synthmaker Akai; the VX600 and the AX73. Both are six-voice analog polysynths, the VX600 being a pad monster with dual VCOs per-voice and the AX73 being remarkable for leads and basses with a 6 VCO architecture usable in either poly, stacked or unison modes through Curtis 4-pole 24/db resonant lowpass filters.

These two synths both employed versatile modulation systems capable of a wide range of sounds. The VX600 had a complex mod matrix, 2 LFOs per voice and allowed frequency modulation. The AX73, with 1 LFO per voice has variable pulse width with PWM usable on any of the waveforms. Individually, neither the VX600 or AX73 have a well-known vintage classic status, but it's not due to lack of capability or rich sound potential. Combined, these synths make an incredible complement, each lending strength to the other and creating some truly powerful sounds when employed together."

"PX V8 is based on an exceedingly rare American polyphonic analog synthesizer, the Voyetra Eight. Released by Octave-Plateau Electronics in 1982, this unassuming 3-space rackmount synth is a 78 lb. analog powerhouse sporting 8 voice cards and an incredibly deep modulation system. With 6 pages of parameters to customize the Voyetra Eight was nothing if not flexible, but in the end it's the sound that counts and it does not disappoint. Thanks to subtle differences in each of the voice cards and a powerful unison mode, the Voyetra Eight delivers a wonderfully uncompromising analog sound with rich, powerful leads, thick basses, warm, modulating pads, strings and more. A unique instrument with a sound greater than the sum of its parts, the Voyetra Eight packs a huge analog punch into a small frame that until now has largely been lost to time.

PX V8 has been a passion project, it took us 2 years to track down a Voyetra Eight, and even then it required significant work to restore to factory condition. Our sound designers spent over 6 months creating sounds with the Voyetra for PX V8; learning the instruments structure, designing patches, exploring possibilities, recording and editing. We tested numerous configurations of cables and converters to ensure you'd experience the highest quality sound before settling on Vovox and Prism, the results are clear.

PX V8’s sampling was made per-key for every patch we designed, both with and without unison mode engaged allowing you to enable genuine hardware unison on any sound in the library. Just like on the Voyetra Eight you can load two layers at once, and with the unison mode engaged you can create truly massive analog sounds without worrying about an 8 voice ceiling.

In the end we recorded over 25,000 samples from the Voyetra - packing PX V8 with a whopping 400 presets made from 176 layers, divided into 10 categories including bass, brass, keyboards, leads, misc, organs, pads, poly, strings and waveforms. Each of the sounds is fully customizable and can be used straight-away or as the starting point for a new sound. Raw waveforms are also available for those who want to create sounds from scratch.

PX V8's aesthetic was adapted to closely mimic design cues from the hardware, giving you the feel of the original instrument as you easily tweak and edit the oscillators, envelopes, multimode filter, LFO and step modulators, dual arpeggiators and a featured effect section including EQ, drive, Thorus, ensemble, Phasor, delay and Sparkverb.

Rare and relatively unknown, the Voyetra Eight is not the simplest synthesizer to master - but the sounds it can create are brilliant, making PX V8 one of our most unique and inspiring libraries yet.

Hark back to the heyday of classic rock and one instrument stands above the rest, a 350lb behemoth that would forever change the way we think about making music. At the heart of this monster was an array of tape machines, one per note on the attached keyboard, each playing a uniquely recorded sound. With only 8 seconds of tape per key and a cumbersome frame this machine had its limitations but was nonetheless impressive for its time, boasting a multitimbral and truly polyphonic 'engine'. Instantly made famous by the Beatles hit 'Strawberry Fields Forever' and used by countless others including The Moody Blues, Rolling Stones, and prog rock legends Yes, this was the 'must-have' sound of the 60's. While its use fell out of fashion the implications it made have become fundamental to modern music production.

With Mello we've aimed to deliver a complete and authentic recreation of this prolific instrument. Dozens of original tapes were multi-sampled on 3 different machines in order to give you the best representation of each of the 28 available sounds. To capture the live experience the key noise and inner mechanical sounds were stereo recorded, including tape noise and key-off sounds, and are all mixable to taste.

To make Mello even more versatile we've added a few tricks of our own, including an analog-modeled tape delay, reverb, a custom unison mode to give you stereo sound without unwanted transposition or chorusing, a switchable multimode filter, a 3-band EQ and more.

With these classics Flute, Brass, Celesta, Choir, Strings, Organs, Guitars, Piano and many more, Mello delivers a warm and buttery tone indistinguishable from the original and is, in every way we could make it, a perfect tribute to the quintessential studio instrument of the 60's.

Features:
• Pristine and comprehensive sample library from 3 original machines
• Mixable key and mechanical noise for authentic experience
• Switchable keyboard range (original or extended)
• Stereo modes including custom unison
• Switchable multimode filter with cutoff and resonance
• ADSR envelopes for amplitude and filter with velocity sensitivity
• 3-band EQ with sweepable mid frequency
• Built-in Sparkverb
• Analog-modeled tape delay"

Two revered analog synths spanning a 4 decade legacy make sweet love with the UVI Engine™. The result: a 3-oscillator subtractive synth with devastating sonics and supreme ease-of-use. Experience the power of authentic overdrive, dual-filters and more in this ode to the arbiters of analog!

The Minimoog was made available to the public in 1971 and continued to be produced with very little change over the next 10 years. Considered the most popular synth ever by some, there's no doubt the instrument has led a prolific life, leaving a massive wake in its path -- changing perceptions and influencing synthesizer design to this day.

The Minimoog has a near-perfect balance of simplicity and sonic beauty.

HEART OF A HYBRID MONSTER : 2 ANALOG SOULS

One of our specialties is making hybrid instruments to get the best of both worlds.

We started with a beautiful 1971 Minimoog, sampling every waveform of every oscillator across every key -- and we did this for multiple overdrive settings. UltraMini seeps with a thick and immediate analog sound produced with the same 3-oscillator configuration as the Minimoog.

But we didn't stop there. In 2002 the Minimoog had a second coming in the form of the Voyager. This synth has its own wild character. Taking a 2011 Limited Edition Voyager XL, we performed the same comprehensive session, creating an identical sample footprint.

UltraMini includes two fully independent instruments with uniquely skinned GUIs, giving you the choice of vintage analog or crushing new school grit.

MAIN FEATURES

3-oscillator configuration, amplitude and filter key follow, unrestricted polyphony, mono retrigger, per-oscillator amplitude, stereo, color and drive control, a built in bit crusher, phaser, delay, limiter and our advanced algorithmic reverb -- SparkVerb, built-in phraser and arpeggiator assignable per-oscillator, step and LFO modulations and a huge library of expertly crafted presets.

Nearly thirty years later, no one has accurately captured the essence of this digital monster.

Today, UVI is proud to say all of that is about to change... Introducing UVI Darklight IIx.

We took our obsession to the next level, creating a complete set of instruments, sounds and sonic tools deeply inspired by the original digital monster. A unique, hybrid process of exhaustive multi-sampling, analysis, and advanced audio processing allowed us to not only capture the original character of this machine but to enhance its ability with a host of today's most powerful analog modeled filters, LFOs, envelopes and effects--packaged beautifully in an old-school interface.
