"There are a number of variants of the safety valve but this matches the 1.0 version Which i think sounds the best, Having tried various versions including the 2.0 and also the GMSN version which has an input buffer and a slightly different circuit, they just didn’t tick the main box which was, TONEEEE MOTHERFUDGING TONEEE. So i thought screw it, and took it back to the Safety Valve 4710.

It does not have any CV control this is for the above reason and also namely, with valve distortion the sound adjustments are more to do with the level of things going into it, so i didn’t see it as being particularly important to complicate the circuit further just to add CV control over things that don’t do as good of a job as adjusting things earlier in the signal chain. The best approach is to treat it like a pedal, it has a switch to turn it on, it accentuates aspects of the sound in a warm waffly kind of manner, and can boost the signal a heck of alot!

Also the Tone control is just a simple RC filter (a resistor and a capacitor) so that didn’t make sense to make CV controllable either as having a filter after the safety valve would do the same thing controllably but better.

There are a couple of differences between this design and the 4710 in the inital video, that being, there is an LED behind the valve this acts as a signal monitor, it listens to whatever goes on in the safety valve and lights up accordingly, Even when bypassed. There is also an engage LED next to the switch.

When there is nothing plugged into the input it goes into feedback mode this is purposeful, it means you can use the module as a drone. You can remove this mode with a simple cutting of a trace on the jack socket PCB board if its annoying but I dont see why you would feel the need. :D

One more thing to note! This kind of distortion like a lot of distortions dont do much to simple sound sources like a single square wave for instance. if you put a single unmixed square wave in, thats what you get out."

"The object is a small automatic device consisting of a Geiger counter (a device that registers ionizing radiation), electronics used to generate sound and control all processes, and also a hydraulic system consisting of a container with water, a set of pipes, a valve, and a pump.

The operating principle is that whenever an ionising particle activates the Geiger counter, the valve releases a water droplet, which falls into the container. This leads to a splash and oscillations in the water, which are registered by sensors. The amplitude of the waves and interference of numerous falling droplets are also detected by the system of optical sensors. All these data activate and control the sound synthesis system. In turn the sound constantly mutates and changes, owing to the non-linear nature of the emerging oscillations and the random falling of droplets. However, there are also some regularities: the lower the radiation, the calmer the behaviour of the system.

Conceptually, the device is a hybrid of a scientific instrument and musical installation, but is in actual fact a small fountain. The object is the embodiment of a perceptual paradox. On the one hand, the ionizing radiation (radiation) is destructive and frightening in its imperceptibility. On the other hand, it is constantly present in space and surrounds us (background radiation). At the same time, the sound, which is constantly dependent on the intensity of radiation, becomes a direct indicator of atmospheric developments, and to a certain extent is a safety indicator. The actual image of the object is sound and its mirror-image visual embodiment of water, the cyclical nature and mediation of sounds and processes induce a more contemplative mood (provided that there is no intense radiation).

The object was created with the support of the Aksenov Family Foundation."

TLC No Scrubs - Live Electronic Cover / Remix

I multitrack recorded this live session. I will be sharing the stems for this in a week. So you can have a look and see what was going on, what bits were going where and what not. All thats over on my patreon so go check that here :-

This was a tough one to get down. Singing and concentrating on wires aaaaaaajkfosdglgfdhhhhhhh ... But a little insight into this :-

Sequenced by two Arturia Beatstep pro's The first beatstep was controlling the two synth lines that were running, which i programmed in at the start on the keyboard. It also controls all the drums, running between two different beats. one for verse (4 to da flooowr) and a breakdown beat for the chorus's, basically just breaking up the kick drum pattern. The second Beatstep in this one was only controlling the JUNO (BUT HOW DO YOU SEQUENCE A POLYPHONIC INSTRUMENT WITH A BEATSTEP PRO??) easy.... the drum channel. assign all of the drum pads to different keys, that way you can play in a polyphonic synth line.
- The first synth line was a single oscillator, running into a moog style ladder filter, with not much attack on its envelope so it sounded like a slow clumsy man being followed by a trombone. In the cover i was adjusting the octave at some points but not much.

- The big bassline which comes in in the chorus is 2 synths. The main part is a triple oscillator going into a ms20 style filter, then into 2 sets of distortion, the second one (a SAFETY VALVE TUBE) has a switch which enables it which boosts the volume, this switch also engages the second bass synth which is a further 3 oscillators and a very low sub oscillator to turn on. These go into a juno style chorus widener and all that stuff. (this switch also fires out a 5v signal to turn up the VCA on the snare spring reverb, and the decay on the high hats) *talk about modular presets hey*

-The juno has 2 midi cables connecting it to the beatstep pro above, so it can send midi and receive midi.

-sadly after however many takes i did of this cover at some point kosmo's face turned off and i didnt realise DOH :(.

-My vocals are running into a roland vocal processor, so i can turn on a pitched down vocal, to add more dynamics, its also going into some saturation and some delay which i turn on and off at points.

-The ms10 is just going through a handful of pedals to make it sound a bit more gnarly, which is tough to saturate a single oscillator synth, so i send it through smallr room reverb first, then into a pitch downing cheapo chinese pedal, then into some distortion then into more reverb. the first instance of reverb gives the distortion something to bite on, instead of just boosting the signal of just a single wave, which aint too fun at all!

I literally listenned to the song a couple of times then just took the essence and forgot most of it haha. hence it ain't really a cover but more a live remix or summit? aaaah who knows!!

Also! the kick trigger is also sent to an envelope generator, which sends out an inverted output to open VCA's on the bass channels, hence you get that snazzy sidechain Ducking **quack quack*"

Vintage BINSON ECHOREC BABY

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"We've been tape and disc echo fanatics for years and have accumulated an extraordinary collection of echo units, some of which are being sold to finance other studio purchases.
We've recently sold a Binson PE603T, a mint Echorec B2 (see feedback below) and an amazing Baby Binson; we have an excellent Echorec 2 coming up for sale soon as well as valve and solid state Copicats (please see other listings) and various spring reverbs.

Offered for sale here is a valve (tube) Baby Binson disc echo from the late fifties or early sixties in reasonable cosmetic condition (see photos below) and good working order. Everything works as it should and this unit sounds good for an original Binson - the echoes are characterful and warm. I've owned this machine personally for around ten years - it has been well-maintained and looked-after during that time and has had minimal use as it was my back up machine.

We've tested this against our benchmark Baby (a fully-restored machine from Eric at ESE Music) and it performs well, though is not up the same standard (as one would expect): all echo head combinations are as even in level and tone as can reasonably be expected from a 50 year-old vintage machine such as this.

Please be aware that these units require some looking after and that regular maintenance is the key to keeping this in good working order.

The motor starts well and the disc spins smoothly, however after not being used for some time it can be noisier when first started and can take a little longer to get up to speed; this is especially likely to be the case after shipping. It recently had a new replacement transformer fitted - supplied by Binson UK.

The photos clearly show the condition - some past damage to the clear plastic disc cover and one knob has a piece missing. The input and output have been converted to 1/4 inch jack sockets and the power input is on an earthed IEC socket to comply with modern safety standards.

Binson Echorecs are amazingly-designed and engineered: where a tape echo's (ie Copicat) input sound is recorded to tape, on a Binson it is recorded onto a circular spinning disc which has replay heads poisitioned around it. It is possible to select single and repeating echoes or reverb-like swells - these units have a sound all of their own. The green Magic Eye valve glows with the level of signal and looks fantastic at night (or on a darkened stage). There is a richness to the sound of these older units - the repeats modulated by the ageing transport mechanism in a most appealing way.

Binsons were one of the must-have pieces of equipment for bands in the early sixties, alongside the Fender Stratocaster and Vox AC30. Famously-used and abused by Barrett, Gilmour, Waters and Wright of Pink Floyd in the 60s and early 70s (Binsons are very much in evidence on Live at Pompeii and can be seen on photos from many Floyd live shows), Binsons are increasingly sought-after by studios, mix engineers and producers for their unique sound.

Binsons do tend to encourage experimental noise-mongering.
The repeats are not hifi - this is after all 50 year-old technology - if you want perfect repeats, buy a digital delay.
Authentic fifties slapback echo, Hank Marvin, psychedelic Syd Barrett, Pink Floyd, Jimmy Page/Led Zeppelin: all these sounds and more can be had from this little baby.

This is set to 240v but other voltages can be selected - it may be necessary to fit a higher-value fuse for certain voltages.

For optimal performance, the jockey-wheel, motor pin and flywheel should be kept clean; the magnetic band should be regularly cleaned and oiled; the heads should be regularly cleaned.

Please be aware that it is a vintage unit and may not take kindly to being shipped. It will be well-packed, but if it's not behaving as it should on receipt, please get in touch. Please be aware that to own a machine such as this, you must be prepared to have it regularly checked over and maintained by a competent technician: it should withstand being shipped, but some calibration may be necessary."

WATKINS WEM IC 300 COPICAT

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"Offered for sale here is this excellent IC300 Copicat: amongst the best-sounding of the tape Copicats - from an echo point of view (the valve Copicats do make great preamps, but don't produce as clear echoes). This is amongst the best examples we've had - it's had a very easy life and is very clean indeed and sounding fantastic.

It is in excellent working order - the heads have been cleaned and demagnetised and it's been fitted with a three-core earthed mains cable to comply with current safety regulations. It sounds as good as a Copicat can. The case is in superb condition, which is increasingly rare and it comes with its original footswitch (see photos below for details). Operationally it's a very good example indeed - all heads replay at an even level and tone - very inspiring to play. All knobs are crackle-free (some crackle may develop over time through lack of use - easily rectified by a few turns or in excessive cases, judicious use of suitable switch cleaner).

It works well with all sorts of sources, and is a great unit for dub delays - sounds lovely when feeding back into self-oscillation. The footswitch socket that is located in the rear compartment carries a wet-only signal enabling this to be used as a send on a mixing desk for dubtastic echo effects.
The echoes are even in level/tone across all four heads, and self-oscillate raucously when the sustain knob is turned up. The repeats are not particularly hifi in nature - they have a pleasing crunch to them which sits well behind whatever you're playing: this is not a digital delay unit!

It's fitted with a new WEM tape - because Copicats only use a short length of tape (compared to Echoplexes or Space Echoes) the tape should be changed regularly for optimum performance. We can supply quantities of tape loops if required. We use and supply both genuine WEM loops (still manufactured/supplied by Charlie Watkins) and loops from MyTape Echo. Usually if there is any overpayment on postage costs, we make up any excess with spare loops, but please get in touch if you require an extra supply.

It is a UK 240v model so will require a step-up transformer for use in countries with 100-110v mains supplies - the UK plug will be removed for overseas sales to countries with a 240v supply (unless otherwise requested).

WASP SPECIAL SYNTHESISER SN 10015

Wasp Special Demo

YouTube Uploaded by 1224Johnmac on Feb 3, 2012

"Here's a little demo of my old Wasp Special vintage mono synth from the 1980's. I'm trying to use all of the knobs to show they are fully functioning. This is a rare model of Wasp with a real wood case. It is serial number 00015 which suggests it was one of the first built. I'm using a modified Epiphone Valve Junior amp to play it through. The sound is being picked up by the built in mic on the Vado camera I'm filming with so the sound reproduction isn't great. I hope you find the video useful. I will be parting company with the Wasp soon."

Oscillosine - Coming soon from Hollow Sun - Vintage HP Oscillator

"Almost as though it was found in the back of a damp garage after decades of neglect, Hollowsun has created Oscillosine. Reminiscent of an oddball inventor's strange homebrew creation, Oscillosine is designed to conjour the sights, sounds and smells of a 1940s experimenter's laboratory... glowing valves, otherworldly audio and maybe a hint of pipe tobacco.

The samples for Oscillosine are taken from a vintage tube Hewlett Packard sine wave test oscillator estimated to date back to the 50s or 60s, maybe earlier.

The more voices (or notes) the thing tries to play, the circuitry seems to strain slightly and the valves glow brighter which is visible through the front panel aperture.

Oscillosine offers serious abstract synthesis for the adventurous to bring something different to your productions whilst also providing more conventional sounds for more mainstream work.

For safety reasons, be sure to wear a white lab coat when operating Oscillosine."

This one is in via Atomic Shadow.
