Harmonic Resonator - EMS VCS3 Clone + BOSS SE-70

Published on Jul 28, 2018 100 Things I Do

"Hopefully with this clip you can play it on some nice open back headphones or good quality speakers and just chill out of a few minutes!

I thought I would have a play with the SE-70. Its been sitting around the studio gathering dust and waiting for its moment in the sun for a while. It has a preset call Sitar... basically a harmonic resonator set to around 1k to create a sitar effect. I'm sure with a Guitar it would be convincing enough in some situations and sound OK! But put some oscillators in it and move them in pitch very gradually you get a whole new effect.

Close in some ways to that of an Waterphone. Do check out Todd Barton's videos on the Waterphone if this unique instrument has slipped past you!)

In this clip I have used the VCS3 + SE-70 and Valhalla Vintage Verb"

He has totally channeled Richard's energy, spirit and further evolved the waterphone. I will make a proper demo of just the waterphone soon, but today I played live over a looped sonic bed of Buchla Music Easel analog synth textures."

Blood of my blood (excerpt)

This one in via Todd Barton

"A track from my 1983 score for the stage production of Dracula. Scored for two sting quartets (the KRONOS Quartet), JP-8 synthesizer, Roland MC-202, Wulitzer electric piano, waterphone and grand pianos.

This is an excerpt from a 12 minute piece.

For the synthgeeks, the multiple MC-202 sequences were tape-synced and all JP-8 tracks were individually performed onto an old Tascam 1/2" eight track tape deck."

OBP TV Interview with Composer Todd Barton

via OBP

"He’s the man behind much of the music at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. And he says, it’s OK if you don’t even notice the music. Todd Barton’s goal is to affect the mood without being obvious."

Some synth spotting in an interview with Todd Barton aka vgermuse. You should recognize the name from numerous posts. Metasynth, the Waterphone, and a pocket theremenin get a mention along with various other instruments.

Todd is currently working on the premiere of an adaptation of Akira Kurosawa's Throne of Blood in NYC by Ping Chong.
