Yuri Suzuki gives Raymond Scott's Electronium electronic sequencer an AI makeover

Uploaded on May 8, 2019 Dezeen

Note Yuri Suzuki brought us the Global Synthesiser Project. You can find additional posts featuring Yuri here. See the Electronium label for demos of the original and more (including an unexpected user, none other than, Michael Jackson).

"Japanese designer Yuri Suzuki has reimagined a sixty-year-old electronic sequencer machine as a physical piece of music software that uses artificial intelligence to generate melodies.

Conceived by musician Raymond Scott in 1959, the Electronium, which is regarded as the world's first electronic sequencer, was made up of three switchboards mounted on a wooden cabinet.

Although the machine was never completed, it was meant to allow users to perform and compose music simultaneously.

Using pre-programmed algorithms, it would turn a snippet of any given melody into a full composition while enabling users to add embellishments over the top.

Presented at the upcoming Barbican exhibition AI: More Than Human, Suzuki – who is a partner at Pentagram – wanted to recreate the landmark machine using musical AI software Google Magenta.

How the Global Modular Synth is Mapping the Sounds of the World

via Moog Music

"Fom wired.co.uk.

Yuri Suzuki is mapping the sounds of the world.

For his Global Synthesiser Project he's created the Global Modular synth. An interactive electronic musical instrument built in collaboration with manufacturer Moog, it can mix 80 environmental sounds from around the planet.

"The idea was to present all of the world's sound identities," says the London-based sound artist, 35. "You can sample a bus engine from London [and combine it] with a cave's acoustics from somewhere else."

Shaped like the world's continents, the Global Modular is a 3.2m x 1.67m installation of 30 samplers, ten reverbs, five sequencers and four semi-modular synthesisers, arranged in "countries".

Mudam Publics Summer Project
For its summer project, Mudam’s Publics Department invited the Japanese creator Yuri Suzuki to conceive Looks Like Music, an audiovisual installation based on his work Colour Chaser. This consists of a miniature robot which detects and follows a circuit – a black line traced in marker pen – interspersed with coloured reference points that the device translates in sound. The public is invited to actively contribute to the development of the installation in the exhibition space by extending the circuit drawn on paper. Visitors thus participate in the creation of a large-scale artwork and enrich a collectively composed sound piece. A series of events and workshops accompanies the project during the month of August.

Merry Synthmas!!!

Hi everyone!  I wish you all a very Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and a Festivus for the restofyas!  Thank you for all your support and well wishes.

Every year I like to put up one post on Christmas day. This year I decided to feature my newly acquired Atomo Synth KRAKKEN keyboard.  Look at that thing.  It turns out it's the perfect gift-sized synth! Not only does it look good, but it's one cool sounding synth.

Click on each pic for the supersized shot.

I'll see you all tomorrow. Until then enjoy some time with your friends and family, and of course here on MATRIXSYNTH. :) Directly below you'll find my exclusive interview with Alessandro Cortini and be sure to see the holiday label for more synthy contributions this year.

Happy holidays folks!

Update: I'm going to start a new tradition this year. I'll be adding holiday content to this post as stuff comes in. I forget everyone just sits around the house all day, so I might as well do something. Check back often for updates. New stuff will be added to the bottom of post as it comes in.
