GRP R24 Sequencer - Performance Rig #shorts

video upload by O.Z. Hall

"This is a demo of the R24 sequencer. I wanted a portable sequencing solution that was fun to play. I mounted the GRP R24 sequencer in a Synthesizers.com QCP22 Portable Cabinet. I have a number of modules, including the new Synthesizers.com Q169 and Q168 Oscillator++ Combo, providing oscillator/env/amp as well as raw noise. I've also got two Z506 Swiss Daisy DSP modules, a well as bandpass filter, VCA, mixers, etc.

There are 4 voices total. Here are the voices in order of 'introduction':
1) Z506 Swiss Daisy DSP in voice/delay mode. CV/Gate from R24 Row 1.
2) The Q169 oscillator 1 processed through the Swiss Daisy DSP for VCF/VCA/ADSR. CV/Gate from R24 Row 2.
3) The Q169 oscillator 2 set to a noise waveform and processed through the Q169 VCA 2/AD envelope. Gate from R24 Row 2.
4) The noise from the Q168 is processed through a VCA/ADSR. The timbre is modulated by a multimode filter (mostly bandpass). Filter CV/Gate from R24 Row 3.

I hope you enjoy watching this as much as I enjoyed making the video!"

Delay + Filter Accents = Ratchet!

video upload by O.Z. Hall

"The Ratchets are more like grace notes than the standard prominent ratchet sound.
This video covers a technique I recently stumbled across. Play a sequence through a digital delay (e.g. a Z506 Swiss Daisy DSP. Set the delay time to 2.5 x the note length ( 1/4 note in this case ). You can manually change the Wet/Dry mix on the delay to get some interesting variations on the sequence.

Add to that a free running square wave LFO which modulates the VCF cutoff frequency, making some notes brighter ('louder') than others. This makes the later delay brighter/louder.

You get an interesting texture, including the occasional "ratchet" effect."

ARP 1601 Sequencer with ARP 2600 synth

video by O.Z. Hall

"This is a demo of a 1977 ARP 1601 Sequencer. It drives the ARP 2600 synth.
Digital Delay is provided via the Z506 Swiss Daisy DSP.
About this sequencer.
I purchased this sequencer new in 1977. I sold it to Ken W., a friend, perhaps 10 years later. He has kept it in great condition, but some of the ICs failed. The clock did not work. The sequencing did not work. I repaired it over the period of two weeks."

ARP 2600 Sequence Jam

video by O.Z. Hall

"ARP 2600 provides the lead.
Z506 Swiss Daisy DSP provides the 'pluck'.
Intellijel Metropolis sequencer drives the Swiss Daisy DSP.
Frequency Central MethAmp provides overdrive as well as a voltage controlled tone with "regen"eration (resonance/Q).
ES FV-1 modules provide digital delay and reverb.
This module is based on the Electro-Smith.com FV-1 submodule. RecklessExperimentationAudio.com provided the prototype PCBs and panels. Thanks Mikhail!

I hope you enjoy this jam."

ARP 2600 plus SwissDaisyDSP Pluck Mode with distortion

video by O.Z. Hall

"The ARP 2600 is providing CV/gate to control the Z506 Swiss Daisy DSP in the new 'Pluck' mode. The Frequency Central MethAmp module provides distortion.

The Swiss Daisy DSP pluck mode uses a Karplus-Strong algorithm to model a plucked string ( think "Rings" ). This plucked string provides a great foundation for driving the MethAmp distortion module.

The Frequency Central MethAmp is a clone of the famous 'Big Muff' distortion pedal used by Hendrix and many others. I could have used the preamp section of the ARP 2600, but the MethAmp also provides tone control, as well as a 'regeneration' control that did not appear on the original Big Muff. The regen can easily cause feedback (frequency controlled by the tone control).

BTW, I love this video on Karplus-Strong synthesis:" [posted here]

Z506 Swiss Daisy DSP - looping AD demo

O.Z. Hall

"One of the modes of the Z506 Swiss Daisy DSP is 'oscillator' mode. The oscillator section (left half) can be used as a 'filterless' voice when combined with the ADSR and VCA (right half). Once of the waveforms is 'Noise'. In VCO mode with the Noise waveform, the bottom left knob is a 6DB per octave lowpass filter (tone control). The noise spectrum can be varied from white noise to pink noise to a little darker than pink noise (but not random), since the audio output is AC coupled.

There is a looping behavior in the ADSR when the sustain is below about the 8:30 knob position. This video explores/exploits that behavior."

Z506 Swiss Daisy DSP - Reverb/ADSR/VCA mode

O.Z. Hall

"This is a demo of the Z506 Swiss Daisy DSP module from Zebra Synth (ZebraSynth.net). The module features an ADSR envelope generator, a VCA on the right half of the module. These functions remain the same with all of the different "Modes". The functionality of the left half of the module changes from mode to mode. The modes are VCO, VCF, Digital Delay, Reverb, Dual Resonator.

This is video covers the Reverb mode. The signal path as a high pass filter on the input and a low pass filter (for damping) on the feedback loop from the reverb output back to the reverb input. There is a modulation input to modulate the reverb size from an external control voltage."

Z506 Swiss Daisy DSP - DualResonator/ADSR/VCA mode

This is video covers the Dual Resonator mode. There are two resonators. Each has a center frequency control. They share a common Resonance control. The Wet/Dry control mixes the dry and filtered signal to the output. There is a modulation input to modulate the center frequency of the resonators from an external control voltage. A positive control voltage will increase the Res 1 frequency and decrease the Res 2 frequency."
