Crazybus music Analysis, Recreation, and Experimentation

video upload by analoq

"A deep-dive into the worst video game music of all time, Crazybus for the Sega Genesis.

00:00 - Intro
00:23 - Analysis
02:58 - Recreation
06:30 - Experimentation

Repository: Includes Puredata patches, Python MIDI generation code, and sample General MIDI file.
https://github.com/analoq/crazybus

Puredata: http://puredata.info

More about Crazybus: https://crappygames.miraheze.org/wiki...

Errata:
I'm not sure of the output range of the random function in the Crazybus code, e.g. rnd(40) may go up to 39 or include 40. So I used both: In the analysis I assume it includes 40 but in the Puredata patch it goes to 39."

"I show how to recreate the „music“ using Puredata and experiment with it further with the help of a Yamaha QY300."

Taylor Sine synthesizer on Raspberry Pi

"Demonstration of my taylor-sine synthesizer ported to the Raspberry Pi. I am (carelessly) playing C. P. E. Bach's Solfegietto. Details:

Read the Sine

"Frequency and amplitude are sampled at 24fps from each channel of an Impulse Tracker module via libmikmod. The data is used for animation in Blender 2.5. Not fully realized, but functions as a proof of concept.

My sincere thanks to the very talented Mazedude for generously permitting me to use his music.

"Demonstration of a sampler I've written. I overview its basic features and then use it as a plugin in my sequencer to play a classic MIDI file. More information on my blog:

Not quite Animusic...

YouTube via analoq
"... more like Musanim. This began as a demonstration of an FM piano synth I wrote but it became equally about the visuals as I tried my hand at procedurally generating a 3D representation of the music in Blender by leveraging its Python API. I'm new to Blender (and 3D modelling in general) so forgive the lack of adornment. The music is a MIDI file I recorded a few years ago."

aliens ate my babysitter

YouTube via analoq
"I wrote a synthesizer "server" for the iPhone that can be controlled over Wi-Fi, as well as a Mac client to parse the MIDI data from my controller and send it over UDP.

By sticking the phone in my mouth it functions as a very awkward talkbox (and I thought enunciating with the Banshee was hard...). The slight network lag makes my timing a little weird on the keys. Even so, it's pretty fun to play with.

I'm performing the theme from classic DOS game Commander Keen: Aliens Ate My Babysitter

The (incomprehensible, sorry) lyrics are from the Keen FAQ: http://www.3drealms.com/faq/keenfaq19..."

"A screencast demonstrating a tracker-style sequencer with simple built-in synths. It's probably not particularly interesting to most, but within my goal to make my own music software it's a milestone; it provides the bare minimum of features to make music."

"During the process of adapting the sonome layout onto my monome, I wrote some software to help me locate common patterns. This video explains and demonstrates the layout and software. If this doesn't make much sense, just relaxen und watchen der blinkenlichten..."

monome sonome 1

YouTube via analoq
"I mapped a subset of the sonome layout used on the Axis64 and Opal keyboards onto my monome. I learned part of the minuet in G (played in C, sorry) to demonstrate. See this: http://www.theshapeofmusic.com/note_p...
The note arrangement was invented by Peter Davies who is here on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/user/notepool2"

"Taking code from my diy softsynth I made this simple drum synthesizer which I am controlling with a Monome and Audio Kontrol 1. And just to spice things up, I throw a Metasonix TM-1 into the signal path. I like when software and valves play together :)"

birfday

YouTube via analoq
"Every year for the last 5 years I've made an awkward performance of "Happy Birthday" to commemorate my (and Beatfox's) day of birthening. This year I've done an iPhone performance and got it on video. Tech details in the annotations. Sorry about the blurryness."
Anyone remember what keyboard type that is? I'm drawing a blank.

"I'm trying to find synergy between my penchant for music making and programming. Here I've written a simple but complete subtractive synthesizer which I'm demonstrating by running a very old MIDI file I wrote thru it and manipulating the sound.

I coded everything except the band-limited oscillators and the filter, both of which I adapted from the excellent website musicdsp.org
