Overlooked Module #14: Synthrotek CF Crossfader

video upload by Musical Miscellany

"It's been a while since I've posted an Overlooked Modules episode. Today, I'm taking a closer look at the Synthrotek CF (Crossfader). This completely passive 2hp module is one every wiggler should own. It's not only handy to fill small gaps in your system, but it's genuinely useful in your patches. And since it's passive, you don't even need rackspace to use it.

G-Storm Electro Introduces Spring Tank Reverb Driver Version 2

video upload by gstormelectro

"Audio + Video by G-Storm Electro c. 2023

Introducing my Spring Tank Reverb Driver version 2. Same great sound and features as before. But now in 4HP with added Feedback knob. The Drive setting is now a trimmer on the PCB Set-and-forget. In today's video I will be auditioning the module with a few different spring tanks and various patch scenarios. Like pairing the reverb with Synthrotek DLY. While my driver module is optimized for Medium length tanks, it can easily be modded to handle long and short size tanks well. Which one is your favorite? Special thanks to my friend Seth, for contributing Behringer System 2500 sounds and footage for this episode!

On the 2500 patches, the dry signal was mult-ed such that the wet/dry mix was handled by a mixer off camera. Audio has been recorded direct, no other mastering or posts effects.

Vintage Folded Line, Medium size tank like those in a Roland Space Echo
0:00 Drone I
0:36 Drone II
1:00 Monotone Bass staccato
Accutronics 4AB3C1B Long size 16" tank
1:22 Massive Kick
2:09 Sample-n-hold
Accutronics BAB3C1B tank like those found in a Fender Sidekick Amp
2:50 Behringer 2500 patch
Ruby Tube 2EB2C1B Short size tank

"Spring Tank Reverb is an 4HP wide Eurorack driver module for use with a variety of spring tanks. Features a CV control of the wet/dry mix. NEW in version 2: 4HP, Added Feedback pot, Drive is now a set-and-forget trimmer on the PCB.

FEATURES

Pots: Tone, Feedback, CV of wet/dry amount, Initial Wet/Dry amount. Drive trimmer for accommodating various spring tanks. Signal strength LED indicator. RCA jacks on the back of the module for mounting tank internally in the case. Included: 10-to-16 pin ribbon cable. Not included: Reverb tank and RCA cables (sold separately)

CHOOSING A TANK

GROUNDING CONNECTORS (5TH character in tank model #) Type A or C is best. SIZE & NUMBER OF SPRINGS | Short length and Medium Length is best. Long length (approx. 16”) may need resistor R8 decreased to 100-ohms for a boost in power. I am happy to switch the resistor for you based on your needs, just let me know before I ship your order out. 2 or 3 number of springs are known to work well. INPUT IMPEDANCE | (2ND character in tank model #) | any except “F” (1475 ohms, has not been tested). OUTPUT IMPEDANCE | (3RD character in tank model #) |“B” known to work best, all others untested. TANKS THAT WERE TESTED AND KNOWN TO WORK WELL | Vintage Folded Line, Medium size, 3-spring, as those used in a Roland Space Echo | Accutronics BAB3C1B Medium size, as taken from a Fender Sidekick Amp | Accutronics 4AB3C1B Long size 16”, 2-spring (R8 to be changed to 100-ohms for best performance). MOST RECOMMENDED | Ruby Tubes 2EB2C1B short size 9”, 2-spring, has plenty of drip and feedback with a size to fit many different case scenarios.

SPECs

Module Depth: 50mm | Current Demand: +12V 39mA, -12V 34mA, 5V not used

Note: due to RCA jack placement and chunkiness of some RCA plugs, it may not be feasible to mount this module on the bottom row of your system rack. Please refer photos. A workaround that might work is to try a cable with 90-degree RCA plug ends."

Quick Test After Korg MS2000R MIDI Switching Modification

video upload by John L Rice

"In this custom case of eurorack modules and a Korg MS2000R I have a custom interface module that brings all of the MS2000R’s inputs and outputs to the front. Last year I added a switch to the panel to select MIDI from either the panel’s input jack or what ever is plugged into the Synthrotek MIDI To Cv module. Today I added a behind the panel connection from the Division6 / Mattson SQ816 sequencer to the custom panels’s MIDI input so I can dispense with using an external cable. #eurorackmodular #modularsynth #korg"

Richard Devine Ascension - Modular Patch

video upload by Richard Devine

"Patch experiment using the Noise Engineering Variatic Erumption x 2, and Minigorille CV graphic modules x 2. Clock output from the Tiptop Circadian Rhythms into the CV Graphic input 1, left side (purple). Then another output from the TipTop CR taken to the right side (siliver) CV Graphic module. Output 4 from the Tiptop CR sent to the left side Variatic Erumption (ext gate to the hit jack input) which would send very slow burst of random gates. The CV Graphic CV output (PONG sequencer mode 2) A and B would output bouncing ball like CV voltages to the Variatic Erumption CV Pattern, and Time/Division input. This created some very organic scattered sequencing, taking one output that was triggering a Snazzy Fx Ardcore running custom frac drums patch.

The other output was running into a trigger input on the Mutable instruments clouds, which is causing the light granular scattering in between the beats. Another output from the V.E. running into the Noise Engineering Basimilus Iteritas, for the FM pluck like percussion sound. Next output from VE running into a 4ms RCD, random triggering spaced out burst to the clock input. From here, the output was taken (4)out to the MakeNoise Optomix set slightly open, which was running a ALM's new "Akemie's Castle" dual voltage controlled oscillator, running out the chord output (OSC A). From the Akemie's Castle the output is going into a Tiptop Z-DSP processed with the Halls of Valhalla card running program 7 (Asgard). Mult output also taken to the Strymon Big Sky pedal running in "Chorale" mode mix completely wet for delicate melodic swells. Making the rich choral timbres. Another gate output from the Noise Engineering V.E. running into the Mutable Instruments Rings module. Output from here sent to the Qu-Bit RT-60 effect module, which is also being triggered (for effects program change) via by the 5 division output from the 4ms Rotating Clock Divider.

Kick drum created using the MakeNoise telHarmonic module, running into an Optomix. Snare and hi-hat sounds courtesy of two Ladik D-333 Rom players. One running the Snares card, and another running hi-hats. Both outputs being summed into the Synthrotek DLY module. The delay input being modulated by a modcan QuadLFO output 1 slow S&H. First sequenced notes via the Mutable instruments Braids running the new "HARM" additive harmonics mode. The quantization was set to "Oinian". Second Braids for other harmony running the "OPSK" smooth sine like melody, VCA mode set to on, with short decay for pluck like quality. Signal for both braids are being sent to another Qu-Bit RT-60 running program number 1-Reverb. Quantization set to "Oinian". Bassline sound created with an Intellijel Shapeshifter output 1, then being run into intellijel uVCF filter in LPF input, then the signal goes out a Qu-Bit RT-60 in program 1 Reverb.

Ambient Explorations pt.32 (Atari Punk Console DIY Synthesizer)

video upload by Piotr Garbaczonek

"I decided to start learning about how to build DIY synthesizers, and the basics of circuit bending as a whole, so as a complete noob in all of this, I bought an Atari Punk Console DIY synthesizer kit on synthrotek. I spent probably close to 7 hours on this simple build, just because I never soldered anything in my life so it took some troubleshooting at some point, but I managed to get it working somewhat. I will be making videos about DIY synthesizers and time-lapses and whatnot of my beginner experiments, and such. For now, I made this 'ambient' piece with the 'Quinoa Punk Console'. I thought it would be funny if I put it into a used box of Chewy granola bars, instead of a normal box.
