If you are curious about the Mixtur Trautonium, in addition to previous posts here, this article is worth a look. From that article:

"The central module with the screens is one of the 'subharmonic generators' that give the Mixtur-Trautonium the 'mixture' bit of its name. The modules appear to be held in place with quick-release thumb screws, which is an interesting idea."

leploop Multicassa Demo

video upload by

https://www.leploop.org

"The Multicassa is an electronic instrument composed of three cassa generators controlled by an analog trautonium like rhythm generator.

The term trautonico is inspired by a vintage instrument, the Mixturtrautonium, invented by Oskar Sala, a student of Hindemith. His research elaborated on since the 1930s was based on another, more simple instrument, the Heimtrautonium, manufactured by Telefunken in the 20s. The Heimtrautonium being one of the first electronic instruments for the living room."

Vintage synth featured in 1957 film "Different from You and Me."

video upload by Robotussin Vintage Synths

"The dangers of electronic music, according to a film about the menace of homosexuality from 1957 called 'Different From You and Me'. It features the Trautonium, a synthesizer from the 1930s that was created by Friedrich Trautwein and used by Oskar Sala. The film, which was called 'The Third Sex' or 'Bewildered Youth'(!) when released in the US, is about a prosperous German family whose son is lured into a seedy world of gay men, nude wrestling and avant garde electronic music by an effete friend and a licentious antique dealer.

Terrified that their son is not into women, the teen's parents induce their cleaning lady to seduce him and awaken his more 'natural' desires. This ends in the month's arrest for arranging prostitution!

While the film is based on homophobic ideas, the original version has some nuance and depicts some of its gay characters in a relatively balanced light for the time. Being gay was still a crime in Germany and elsewhere in the 1950s. However, before it could be released in West Germany censors insisted on changes, weaving in more anti-gay rhetoric, making the gay characters more criminal and removing scenes that showed gay men in positions of authority and respectability.

For me, it's remarkable only for the scenes featuring the synthesizer, but it is interesting that even then electronic music was associated with same-sex relationships, given that 20 years later the gay communities would be such a driving force behind the foundation of the electronic music scene.

I have uploaded all the scenes from this film that feature the Trautonium to my YouTube channel, which is also called Robotussin Vintage Synths."

LudoWic is an artist and producer of electronic music. The field he works in is the transitional area of music, art and design, in which he experiments
with modern technology in combination with old vintage techniques and gear.
LudoWic was invited by D-Sound for an artist-in-residence at Theatre "Kunstmin" located in Dordrecht the Netherlands. He asked video-artist Roel Weerdenburg to join him during this residency.
Since graduating from the Utrecht School of the Arts, Roel Weerdenburg has focused on building audiovisual installations. These installations are mainly aimed at the re-use, modification and upcycling of old electronic video equipment.
Using feedback loops, noise generators, tube televisions and vintage analog synthesizers, LudoWic and Roel created a world in which they balance between control and surrender.

Lumanoise V4_Trautonium_Patch

video upload by LepLoop

"Lumanoise V4 Euro Rack patch by @nanocyde_artist
Day 18 of #jamuary2023 - Trying something that I’ve had in the back of my head for a while - controlling a vactrol-based oscillator module diatonically to create a nice melody. The frequency response is non-linear but having a ribbon control means you can mark the notes. Notice how the higher octave is twice the width of the lower one! The Lumanoise v4 turns out to be very versatile in this configuration, even as it produces unintuitive results sometimes.
It’s also worth noting that the LEP module and the Doepfer controller were both inspired by the Trautonium.

Doepfer A-126-2 Frequency Shifter and Trautonium

video upload by Vykaar Tones

"First try out of the new A-126-2 Frequency Shifter on the output of my ribbon controlled Trautonium. Signal route in to A-138n mixer is A-111 VCO2 sine output, A110 sawtooth, A110 square wave to A-163 VDIV frequency divider and A-118 white noise. Output of A-138n goes to A-104 Trautonium Formant Filter and from that to A-131 VCA controlled by pressure CV from A-198 Trautonium Ribbon Controller. The A-126-2 audio in comes from the VCA and the output goes to mixer with reverb and delays. Random CV from A-118 is occasionally added to control the pitch of the A126-2 oscillator."

Quanalog - Gesprächskonzert @SUPERBOOTH22

And the recap press release from SUPERBOOTH:

"SUPERBOOTH SUMMER SUN & SYNTHESIZER

SUPERBOOTH22 and SOOPERgrail welcomed around 6000 trade visitors, day guests and over 170 international exhibitors at FEZ-Berlin. In the year of the 20th anniversary of the Superbooth, for the first time innovative guitar builders were represented in larger num- bers and with their own exhibition space under the name SOOPERgrail.

The expanded concept of the largest trade event for electronic musical instruments in Europe has proven successful, and Superbooth Berlin GmbH has overcome the worst obstacles resulting from the Corona crisis. This clears the way for next year‘s planning - the date is set:
SUPERBOOTH23 and SOOPERgrail #2 at FEZ-Berlin: May 11-13, 2023. with even more innovative instruments and music, concerts, workshops, presentations, indoors and outdoors

Andreas Schneider: "For the anniversary version of Superbooth, as it turned out after all obstacles and difficulties, we can really only be grateful to everyone and congratulate everyone who was able to be there. The delicate little flower called #SOOPERgrail also made a successful start and the international events - above all the presentation with Hainbach for the Goethe Institute Tokyo and the partici- pation of Tom Oberheim and Dave Smith with their new instrument - were im- portant factors of culture and economy alike. We are already excited to see what will develop from this next year!"

The various areas of the anniversary edition each convinced with their very own at- mosphere, which always meandered between music festival, nerd get-together and a group trip with friends. The basis for relaxed encounters, lively exchange and a good mood was provided by the extended event area in the park, the large number of exhibi- tors and the summery weather.

Live:
The stage program represents an enormous variety of musical variation. Early electronic instruments such as the Trautonium were on display. Hainbach presented how electro- nic music was made by artists like Stockhausen in the 1960s, and many concerts fea- tured modular synthesizers, which can be seen as modern successors to the featured instruments. From the stages you could hear great live electronic music from ambient to techno, a lot of experimental and innovative works. Surprisingly for many guests, there was a performance by Richie Hawtin on the last day of the event.

The Modular Synthesizer Ensemble gave the mostly young participants their first stage experience with a composition they had previously developed together in a work- shop lasting several hours.
Within the framework of SOOPERgrail, there were many outstanding concerts and workshops, with individual instruments presented. In addition to traditional crafts, the artists and exhibitors also showed possibilities that enable expanded artistic expression. With the presented technologies, external devices can be controlled and microtonal music can be played.

The main stage for diverse guitar music was located in the circus tent. There was, among others, a blues concert by DobBroMan with spontaneous support from Thorsten Quaeschning of Tangerine Dream, the performance of Nagen & Kotzmann, who blurred the line between drone, ambient and free jazz, and Linalab, who brought along a drummer for her electronic post-rock, processed the sound of her electric guitar with a synthesizer, thereby ideally united the concepts of SOOPERgrail and SUPERBOOTH22.

Dokumentation:
The lecture-concerts (Gesprächskonzerte) recorded during the event are now available on Superbooth Berlin‘s YouTube and Vimeo channels, and the recordings of the other concerts will be released in the coming weeks.

Lecture-concerts are a combination of concert and presentation, where new inst- ruments are introduced in a concrete musical context. This year, legendary synthesizer manufacturer Oberheim made a comeback and presented a new instrument in this for- mat that, like its predecessors, seems to have the potential to become a classic.

We would like to expressly thank all exhibitors, artists, media representatives, trade vi- sitors and last but not least the numerous private visitors for their great support and the wonderful three days and are already looking forward to SUPERBOOTH23 and SOOPER- grail next year.

Save the date now: SUPERBOOTH23 and SOOPERgrail from May 11 to 13, 2023 at FEZ-Berlin!"

Doepfer - Trautonium System

video upload by NOISEBUG

"Available on Noisebug.net and Reverb."

via NOISEBUG Reverb

Note auction links are affiliate links.
See the site's privacy policy for more info. Inspired by the Trautonium invented by Friedrich Trautwein in the 1930's and most well known from Alfred Hitchcock's movie The Birds, this miniature version of the Trautonium gives you the full vibe of what it may have felt like to play the actual instrument back then.

The focus of the entire system is the Doepfer A-104 Trautonium Formant Filter. It is made of four parallel resonance filters, each filter can be switched to low pass or band pass or off. Frequency, resonance and level are controlled for each filter separately and are summed to the final output to create formant vowel like tones.

To give you the most true experience of the original Trautonium we added the Doepfer A-198 Ribbon Controller for expressive touch control of pitch and volume. This allows for free flowing pitch adjustments commonly found in acoustic instruments, like the cello, violin and other world stringed instruments.

The Doepfer A-115 Audio Divider gives you octave down divisions from the original pitch to add a classic organ type feel to the over sound, but once filtered through the A-104 you can start to get in the cello territory like mentioned above.

Modules included in this system

- A-198 Ribbon Controller
- A-110-2 VCO
- A-115 Audio Divider
- A-180-1 Multiple
- A-145 LFO
- A-104 Trautonium Formant Filter
- A-131 Exponential VCA
- Tendrils Cables (2 packs of 6)
- Tendrils Mutant Cables (2 cables)

Housed in a 4ms POD64X.

This system includes a 4ms 45W power brick.

Doepfer R2M - Ribbon Controller and Control Unit SN 270043

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"R2Ms are discontinued and rare. Includes a manual but not a power supply (any generic 9VDC 250MA center pos PS will work)

Includes connecting cable (note this looks like a male to male USB cable but the instructions are VERY clear to NOT plug this into a USB adapter)

Key feature is that the ribbon and control unit send MIDI and CV out for location and pressure.

The ribbon controller can cover 1 octave, 2,3,4 or 5 octaves
It can store and retrieve 16 presets
It offers 16 different quantizations\ settings to different scales
It has a Trautonium mode allowing pitchbend around 1 starting note and sliding pitch up or down up to the pitch bend range of you MIDI device
It has an arpegiator spanning one or several octaves

R2M is a ribbon controller that generates control signals by moving a finger on the game manual . The data are output simultaneously as midi signals and as CV / gate control voltages. The R2M is thus able to control midi equipment as well as CV / gate-based devices (e.g. analog synthesizers or analog module systems). R2M stands for R ibbon to ( 2 ) MIDI.

This is used electronics, tested and non returnable. Only warranty is that it won't arrive DOA. Will ship tracked and insured.

R2M consists of two parts: the ribbon bar and the control unit .

Ribbon bar is a 50 cm long position sensor and a pressure sensor underneath. The control unit converts the data supplied by the manual (position of the finger and pressure) into appropriate midi commands or CV / gate voltages.

Here are the most important features of the R2M :
Very precise and sensitive position sensor (length 50 cm) that is activated by simply placing your finger on it
sensitive pressure sensor under the position sensor
Solid metal frame (interlaced double-U profile), painted silver-gray
Several M3 internal threads on all sides (e.g. for fixing to a surface, combined assembly of several manuals, attachment of a shoulder strap, etc.)
Dimensions: approx. 600 L x 30 W x 18 H (dimensions in mm)
Connection to the control unit via 4-pin cable (identical to USB, but no USB function!)
Connection cable
precise and sensitive position sensor (length 50 cm) that responds even to light finger touch
sensitive pressure sensor located below the position sensor
measures: about 600 length x 30 width x 18 height (measures in mm)
connection to the control box via 4-pin cable (same as used for USB connections but no USB function)"

Reaktor 6 Subharmonic Synthesizer (Building a Moog Subharmonicon Knockoff) | Simon Hutchinson

video upload by Simon Hutchinson

"Building a subharmonic synthesizer in Native Instruments' Reaktor 6 Primary inspired by instruments like the Mixtur-Trautonium and Moog Subharmonicon.

Subharmonics are frequencies that are whole-number divisions of a given frequency (in contrast to harmonics, which are whole number multiples of a frequency). While harmonics naturally occur as part of the timbre of a sound, subharmonics, when introduced, sound like distinct pitches, allowing you to create chords of harmonically-related notes.

This tutorial walks you through making a set of subharmonic oscillators and envelope filter like the ones on the Moog Subharmonicon

Flutterance - A hypnotizing performance on the Doepfer pressure-sensitive Ribbon controller.

video by Hermisphere

"Performed by Hermigervill using the following:

Doepfer A-198 TRC Trautonium / Ribbon Controller
2hp Osc
Intellijel Quad VCA
Antumbra Knits (mini Plaits)
Big T Music Monsoon
Moog Matriarch

The Knits produces an undulating drone which supports the ribbon performance. The ribbon is pressure sensitive, with the pressure controlling the VCA volume and the pitch of the 2hp osc is scaled to fit exactly on those three octaves on the Prophet keyboard below, so the keys of the Prophet give a visual pitch reference on the ribbon. The Matriarch is patched to induce a little bit of slow vibrato on the 2hp osc via the mod wheel. The whole mix is then sent through a Monsoon for some shimmery goodness."
