Modal Electronics Introduces Modal 008 in a Rack & New IO Board

NAMM 2016 - Modal 008R Analog Poly in a Rack

Published on Jan 25, 2016 sonicstate

"Modal Electronics 008R and the DSP IO board for the 002"

You might have been familiar with the Modal 002 in a rack, but NAMM was the first time we got a look at the all analog Modal 008 in a rack. Check out the Union Jack on its back! Some details and images from Modal Electronics

008R provides eight discrete voices of polyphony with an uncompromising analogue architecture utilising the highest grade components throughout

Two 100% analogue VCO’s per voice with two sub oscillators, providing sawtooth, triangle, square with PWM and noise.

Each of the waveforms can be blended together to provide completely new complex wave shapes

Innovative and extremely flexible 15 multi-mode filter, consisting of traditional modes such as low-pass, band-pass and high-pass as well as more unusual notch, phase and combination modes.

Filter overdrive enables the sound to be driven to sonic extremes

A range of classic analogue polysynth features such as oscillator and filter FM bringing amazing sonic power

Two LFO’s, both capable of reaching audio rates with multiple wave shapes and midi sync

11 modulation sources with unlimited destinations. Each destination can be set its own unique depth, a super smooth sample rate of 10kHz

008R features a range of sequencing options – a built in 2 Track, 12 row, 32 step sequencer with 16 dedicated step time editing knobs on the front panel and MIDI sync capabilities. Sequences can also be transposed dynamically while running

A very highly featured arpeggiator with a wide range of different modes, including ‘hold’ mode, enabling arpeggiator-based sequences to be created

The Modal Electronics Animator, which enables any control parameter on the 008R to be sequenced, enabling very complex filter transisitions, wave form changes and modulation matrix changes to be sequenced

nonlinearcircuits 329 phase flange 1

"module based on the Aries 329 Phase/Flange. ummmm this thing is fkn great, does so much more than a stand-alone phaser.
Starts with 2 inputs from a Sloth chaos, then it gets some audio rate tri-wave on the 1V/oct input."

"Vintage 1960s CHAMBERLIN RHYTHMATE Tape Loop Tube Amp Drum Machine. This is something I hate to part with- I will do so only if I can get a strong price for it. If you're looking at this auction, you probably know what this is. It has 14 different tape loops, each of which have 3 different drum patterns. You move the tape head to the desired loop with a lever, and a sub-lever selects between the three different loops on each tape. All 14 tapes are original to the unit, and all are in good playing condition. Below is a video I shot years ago demonstrating this very machine. Please note that it currently does not work quite as well as it did when I made that video. Specifically, the playback speed is rather slow and sluggish. This is due either to a worn rubber wheel or a loose motor shaft, or a combination of both. This is purely a mechanical issue (the speed runs fine when I apply a bit of pressure to the side of the motor shaft), and should be an easy fix for a qualified tech. Also, the reverb knob currently only introduces a buzzing sound. I've never been quite sure if the spring reverb tank was supposed to apply reverb to the drums, or only to the external input on the amp, but I don't recall ever getting it to work properly either way. Again, though, this ought to be an easy enough issue to resolve for a qualified tech. The tape head itself can be a little finicky in terms of getting it to line up perfectly with the desired track while avoiding minor crosstalk with the other tracks, but I suspect this is an issue that's typical for these units. The unit has the typical minor wear and dust for something of its age. If shipped, this item will be double-boxed to ensure safe delivery."

"Keyboard has the gligli OS mod installed which basically modernizes the operating system and upgrades the processor to fix the flaws that have plagued the P600 since it was released. Key improvements are faster envelopes (with adjustable envelope curves) as well as fast knob resolution to eliminate zippering..."

"Good working condition Roland SH-101 with a Roland "lump in line" power supply (my favorite!)"

"Lump in line" meaning the power supply sits between the plug you connect to the synth and the plug you connect to the wall as opposed to a wall wart power supply which takes up more space on your power strip or wall socket.

Maplins Voice Vandal clone - prototype PCB 2

Published on Jan 25, 2016 circuitbenders.co.uk

"The second prototype PCB for a Maplins Voice Vandal clone.
DIY PCB's should be available soon from circuitbenders.co.uk"

"It was a kit from Maplin, probably in the early 90's if i recall correctly. Its got a grungy digital delay and a 4 stage high speed signal gating circuit, with a knob to set the gating speed. Gate the signal fast enough and you get cross modulation style effects."

DreamsOfWires - Volca Keys & Loopy HD

"If I need to think about something I'll go somewhere, often the beach. If I don't want to think about something I'll play video games. I'm not sure where making music lies between those two. Somewhere I guess.

Recording: It's just a bunch of sustained notes recorded into Loopy, using a midi fader app to control loop volumes (in this case the free version of Midi Designer), then a Volca sequence was added. The output of Loopy was recorded into Virsyn's AudioReverb."
