Patchwerks Seattle Synth Meet August 2016 Pics

Patchwerks Seattle Synth Meet August 2016

Above are a few pics I took at the event. It's a Flickr slide show, so mouse over for the controls. As always it was a great event filled with synth enthusiasts. Huge thanks to Patchwerks and Melrose Market Studios for hosting.

Some highlights this time around included some great talks from MØFFENZEEF Modular, Syntegrator representing KiwiTechnics & Vyzor, and Korg. Also present were Scott Jaeger of Industrial Music Electronics, Joe Grisso of Detachment 3 Engineering & STG, with an Archangel sequencer and expander and 5U system, George Mattson of Mattson Mini Modular, Synthrotek and DinSync. On the hardware front, aside from various eurorack and 5U systems, there was a small Bugbrand modular, a new Minimoog Model D, Mother 32 & a Brother From Another Mother, a DSI Prophet 12, an EML 100, MFB Dominion 1, and more as you can see in the pics. A cool surprise was that Theremin World was also present. The best part of events like these of course are meeting likeminded people, familiar faces, and people you only knew online prior to the event. To everyone I met that complimented my work on the site, thank you for the support! It is appreciated.

Be sure to see the Patchwerks channel for previous posts for this event as well as the one back in April.

"Patch Notes:
Drums
Sequenced in Patterning then each track was overlaid in the video so that you can see them all at once

SMR Drone
Gates from Seq1 hitting the inputs
Custom scale tuned to two chords (more or less)
Seq1 static CV is used to move between the chords with a bit of morph

West Coast Melody
Rene sequence driving
STO SHAPE modulated by Maths ch4 (fall modulated by Woggle STEPPED) into
Optomix with trig to STRIKE and Maths ch1 enveloping

West Coast Harmony
Similar to above WC Melody
Rene is in a different snake pattern (the second) with the note in row 2 offset (from pos3 to pos2 since row 2 goes backwards in pattern 2)
Variation on the Woggle modulation including mixing it with a slow LFO

"303ish"
Standard VCF303 patch with some wiggling
Rubicon as VCO, uVCA as VCA
Cooked in tubes in the Source+Plus

Bandpass
Rubicon sigmoid to Polaris in BP
Modulated by PEG and ADSR2
uVCA enveloped by ADSR1

Strum
It's not up in the mix but during the breaks where the Bandpass is playing there's a sequence from the Rene running double speed through the STO shape modulated by Wogglebug STEPPED into the Optomix struck and opened by Maths

FM Hash
Sputnik 1 FM'ing Sputnik 2 into the Optomix (no strike no envelope) via Timbre modulated by Seq1 LFO
FM through uVCA enveloped by Seq1 LFO iirc (sorry spotty patch notes on this one)"

Dave Smith Instruments Launches "In The Spotlight with the PRO 2" Series with Michael Wooten

You might recall the Artist Interview series from Dave Smith Instruments posted here. They just launched a new series focusing on users of the Pro 2. Their first interview, which you can find here, is with Michael Wooten.

"Michael Wooten is a young multi-instrumentalist and composer and a recent Berklee graduate, where he studied under jazz greats such as Tia Fuller, Greg Hopkins, Hal Crook and Terence Blanchard. Originally from Philadelphia, Michael has shared the stage with artists such as Sheila E, Terri Lyne Carrington and Ledisi and has worked on upcoming records with trumpeter Darren Barret and drummer Lenny White. His main focus, however, is his own original music, which while rooted in Philly’s rich musical tradition, draws from a plethora of different influences and experiences.

We recently caught up with Michael between projects to talk with him about about how he’s using his Pro 2."

AXEL F on the Yamaha MOXF!

Published on Aug 22, 2016 Bill Vincent

"This is the iconic piece from the 1980's film 'Beverly Hills Cop', sequenced using only a Yamaha MOXF synth, with some tweaked stock sounds and no custom samples. I have always loved this piece, even when it was destroyed by 'Crazy Frog'. I loved much of Harold Faltermeyer's work in the late 1970's with Donna Summer and his solo work in the 80's. This is my tribute to this song, and to Harold, using the Yamaha MOXF as my palette. Enjoy!"

"Sequential Circuits Prophet 5. I think it's a 3.3 but you can check yourself from the serial number. Here's the work I just had done: Rebuilt the power supply, Rebuilt keyboard & springs, Installed new front panel potentiometers, Installed new CEM 3340 {repaired LFO], reflowed all interconnects inside to insure reliability, cleaned and reseated all IC chips in their sockets, cleaned and referbished all cable assemblies, headers and interconnects and loaded factory patch set #2. Tested all functions. All work was performed by Pro Audio in Tampa Florida by Mike Jay who is a vintage synth guru. He's vintage himself. I just spent over $1600 on this Prophet 5 to make it 100% correct. It should last you a long, long time. I didn't redo the wood case so there are some bumps and scratches. If you want a pristine wood case use sandpaper and oil. A word on Prophet 5 synths: Everyone seems to want the 2.2. I've owned the 2.2 and used it in the studio. I constantly had to hand tune the oscillators before each session, a real pain. That's the big difference with the 3.3 - the oscillators stay in tune."

"Very rare Synthesizer - PPG WAVE 360 COMPUTER ( 8 voices) . This is the first serially produced wavetable synthesizer from 1979. But only about 40 pcs. were manufactured and saled . Today is the wonderful PPG 360 therefore a real rarity and is very - very - very hard to find. This synthesiter from nonsmoking studio is for his age in good, technical and cosmetic condition, has some scratches on the top and backside (see photos) - some keys react sometimes not immediately or not at the first pressure. The keypad contacts maybe should be cleaned - that has not be made so far."
