Filth Mode Engage

Published on Oct 22, 2016 voltlif

"Somewhere between dirty synth pop and industrial, based around a severely filthy kick drum-turned-bassline. Key patch notes:

Kick/bassline: Mannequins Mangrove through Serge Resonant EQ. Mangrove's pitch is driven by a sharp decaying Maths envelope, while its Formant is modulated by a rising Maths envelope, so it starts off a bit like a kick drum then swells into buzzy pulse-like sound. One of the higher bands from the Serge also goes into Erbe Verb, which has its Mix opened up by the same rising envelope. This creates thin washes that I bring in a bit before the main bassy sound.

Melodic riff: Mother 32, with its saw output going into a Doepfer A196 PLL, the output of which is fed back into Mother's external input. This creates a subtly glitchy accompaniment to the PWM from Mother's own VCO. An LFO modulates the balance between the two, and I tweak the balance manually at times. A clock goes through Branches into Mother's reset input, which I use to randomly stutter the sequence in the second half.

Snare: pink noise through a VCA opened by a sharp Function envelope, then processed through Demora set to a very short delay. Demora's Width control is sequenced to give more short repreats, creating ringing effects and stereo widening.

Hi-hats: open channel of Mutant Hi-hats, through a PIttsburgh Filter in notch mode to create a pseudo-phaser effect. Hats triggered by various clock divisions passed through a Doepfer A152. An A149-1 switches randomly between these, and the gate out from the slowest channel goes into the Mutant's Decay CV input."

Nicolas Lévy - Songs for Buchla

Published on Oct 22, 2016 Nicolas Lévy

"Hey

So, I finally finished this song I started a few vids ago! :)
I'm recording this one, + a few others at the moment to make a LP.
The plan is to come up with something I can perform live with the Buchla 200r system, a BigSky pedal a SM58+looper, a Folktek bug and that's it. No overdub at all. Live electronic music (made possible by the 248's ability to save sequences).

As you can tell, these songs are not really songs. These are not electronic/improv tracks either. But something in the middle I try to do between songwriting and Buchla performing...

This was shot while recording, on a Eos 70D I borrowed and don't really know how to use (as you can see!).

"Had too much fun with this one. Playing with Samplr on perhaps the most famous sound sample of the month, The Donald's pussy grabbing audio.

Patterning is doing all the percussion
Animoog: bassline
iM1: Rave-y and syncopated lead
Sunrizer: Big analog wash pad patch
Model 15: Final analog-ish lead after the wash
Donald Trump's very own Tic Tac container is doing the shaker.
Keep your eyes open for a dancing pussy somewhere in this video."

SynthCube Acquires and Continues Music From Outer Space

As many of you know, Ray Wilson of Music From Outer Space passed away on July 21. There has been some speculation as to what would happen to MFOS. Ray Wilson's projects and website have been an incredible resource to the DIY community, and those looking to introduce themselves to the world of synth DIY. Well, I am happy to announce that SynthCube will be keeping the world of MFOS alive.

"SynthCube is delighted to announce the acquisition of Music From Outer Space. In cooperation with Ray Wilson's surviving spouse Debra, the 'Maiden of MFOS,' we are developing plans to extend Ray's work indefinitely. The MFOS website will remain in place, with all of its great content, humor and documentation. Plans are underway to continue to make the MFOS pcbs, panels etc available via our synthCube webstore, as well as other authorized MFOS stores and websites who choose to stock those items. Not only will the website and product line continue, plans are to extend it. Full kits, panel mount pcbs, reduced size euro-friendly boards, panels, pre-built products... all possibilities are on the table. More details to follow!

In honor of Ray Wilson, we will be establishing a memorial scholarship fund to support education in the areas of electrical engineering, audio, electronic music etc. We are also exploring avenues to use Ray's designs to supplement STEM teaching and training in a number of venues.

Existing MFOS inventory is available now via www.synthcube.com/cart. Plans are underway to restock any unavailable items.

Please refer any questions to us via the synthCube contact form or email."
