"The Prophet 2002 is the rackmount version of the Prophet 2000, which belongs to the "second generation" of samplers which, unlike machines such as the Fairlight CMI and New England Digital Synclavier that came before, cost less than a Maserati. Many of the samplers from this era are considered hybrids, in the sense that sampling was of course done digitally, but the back end was analog. The Prophet 2000 features eight CEM3379s (VCF/VCA/Pan)--one for each voice--and has the distinction of resonance control, which not all samplers of this vintage featured. Though programming from the front panel definitely requires some quality time with the at first (it's very well-written and interesting to read), everything is accessible through the front panel button matrix. There's also an awesome standalone sysex editor called available for free for both Mac and PC."
