Avril 14

Published on Apr 14, 2018 Tenkai Kariya

"In honor of April 14th (incidentally my fathers birthday, as well as my late pet bird Mango's birthday) I am demoing FLXS1 song mode with a three voice rendition of Aphex Twin's Avril 14. Main voice is the Macbeth Micromac, bassline is an Acidlab M303, and accents are the Intellijel Atlantis. All sequenced with Zetaohm FLXS1, in one take, with 7 separate patterns sequenced with song mode.

The new firmware will be released very soon, with a full manual update as well as a complete demo video. Stay tuned!

Irregular Heart Beat: Cello + Waldorf Microwave

Published on Apr 14, 2018 Miguel d'Oliveira

"Was playing around with this old Waldorf Microwave XT (2nd hand 'bargain' I got yesterday) and thought it'd be interesting to add a couple of lines on a cello (yes, I use bits of tape to navigate the fingerboard)
Recorded with a DPA piano mic stuck to the tailpiece with blu tack."

Synth Rorschach #52: Oh, where the hell is that filter cutoff knob?

via @Earthnik

"Oh, where the hell is that filter cutoff knob?"

5U, euro, or frac? Euro on the right. 5U or Frac she's working on in the middle. Mults on the left? Bass Station Rack, Drum Station, and rack synths to her right? Definitely DIY... What is that falling off on the right?

Quantum Type Sounds ... On a Blofeld?

Published on Apr 14, 2018 100 Things I Do

"Like many I can't wait to get my hands on a Waldorf Quantum. Its got a hefty price tag but from the latest demos that have been released it seems to have some amazing possibilities!

Between now and 2019 when I might be able to afford one if i'm lucky I will try and make my Blofeld work as hard as it can. So it occurred to me after watching the excellent example from Sonic State this week that I have never used the Sample side of the Blofeld ... can it make it a little granular sounding ? Here's what I came up with and how I did it.There is a Noodle at the end :D"

020//Bleed For Me - Mother 32 using Maths as a waveshaper

Published on Apr 14, 2018 Alastair Wilson

"A semi-self-generating modular patch using a Moog Mother 32 and a Maths module, sent through an Eventide Space shimmer reverb and an Eventide Timefactor on reverse delay setting. No other processing has been applied.

Maths can act as a slew limiter for CV, to smooth out stepped voltages. However, if you patch a saw wave into the input of channel 1 or 4, you can use Maths as a very crude filter, smoothing out the sharp corners of the saw wave - this is what's happening in the patch. All changes in timbre of the plucks is Maths being modulated while slew limiting the saw wave. It sometimes sounds filtered, sometimes like a guitar string, sometimes like a hard sync effect, and sometimes like a phaser... But nothing is actually modulating the Mother 32's filter cutoff except for the pluck envelope!

I made this video because Maths is a great choice for a first module to accompany the Mother 32, and I often underuse it. It's so good that despite my fairly small setup, I have a second Maths in another case!

2nd version of my Metaphase sound machine.

Snip:

"The Metaphase Sound Machine is a kind of homage to the ideas of the American physicist Nick Herbert who in the 1970s has created both Metaphase Typewriter (Fig. 1) and Quantum Metaphone (a speech synthesizer). These were some of the first attempts to put the phenomenon of quantum entanglement in practice and one of the first steps towards the creation of a quantum computer. The experimental devices, however, had not confirmed theoretical research, and Herbert’s obsession with metaphysics resulted in the publication of several of his works on the metaphysical in quantum physics, that have led to a serious loss of interest to the ideas of quantum communication. One day, in a course of his experiments, Herbert has hacked into an university computer trying to establish a contact with the spirit of illusionist Harry Houdini at the day of the centenary of his birth.

In his device Herbert in order to achieve a quantum entangled state used as a source radioactive thallium, which was controlled by the Geiger radiation counter. The time interval between pulses was chosen as conversion code. Several psychics had participated in the experiments. They tried to influence the endless stream of random anagrams arising from a typewriter or cause "the ghost voice" to be heard out of metaphone. Scientists also have conducted sessions to bring about the "spirit" of a colleague who had recently died, and who knew about this typewriter. In 1985 Herbert wrote a book about metaphysical in physics. In general, his invention and articles quite severely compromised the ideas of quantum communication in the eyes of potential researchers and by the end of the XX century no any substantial progress in this direction was observed."

"Hello everyone,

as you are aware, many of our synthesizers such as Model D, Neutron, Pro-1 etc. have been designed to be used as standalone instruments but also to fit the hugely popular Eurorack format.

Many of you have now requested for us to build individual Eurorack modules, powered Eurorack cases and especially bring back some of the legacy modular systems.

At the same time we also thought about inviting all designers and engineers among you to participate in this initiative.

The goal would be to build a wide range of modules and - as usual - at very affordable prices (target prices US$ 49-99) which would allow us to open this market and get as many people as possible into synths and making music.

Our synth teams are very excited about this potential direction and would love to hear your opinion.

Are you interested in Eurorack systems?
What modules would you like us to make?
What legacy modular systems would you like us to make?
What accessories do you require?

Thank you :-)

Uli"
