Strange Patching: Parallel Envelopes

Published on Jun 6, 2018 MAKEN0ISE

"Allen Strange wrote the book on modular synthesizers in the 1970s. Electronic Music: Systems, Techniques, and Controls. Unfortunately since the expanded 1982 edition, it has never been reprinted, and in today’s landscape where more people have access to modular synths than ever before, very few have access to the knowledge contained within. This video series will explore patches both basic and advanced from Strange’s text. Even the simplest patches here yield kernels of knowledge that can be expanded upon in infinite ways. I have been heavily influenced by Strange since long before I became a modular synth educator. Please share this knowledge far and wide.

This video shows parallel envelope patching to create two simultaneous note events with different shapes and durations."

Juggling Rhythms with Muxlicer & Burst from Befaco

Published on Jun 6, 2018 DivKidVideo

"Here's my first play around with the new Befaco Muxlicer and the Burst. Burst is creating polyrhythmic bursts triggering my hi hat, Muxlicer is sequencing, ratcheting / gate sequencing, trigger several percussion and one shot sounds breaking up gates across the steps and a hole lot more. Both really great modules for juggling and playing around with rhythms."

Tips n' Tricks: Creating a voltage-controlled envelope with 2x Moog Mother-32

Published on Jun 6, 2018 Alastair Wilson

"Welcome back to another tutorial, this time for 2x Mother 32!

In this video we use the VC Mix feature to morph between 2 envelopes with different decay times, giving the effect of a single voltage-controlled envelope. Never underestimate the power of utilities on a synth; by adding the VC Mix feature, Moog have made the M32 a million times more powerful!"

Urbaninity: Featuring Moog Mother 32s and DFAM

Published on Jun 5, 2018 Wingo Shackleford

"I love to jam on the Moog Triple Threat Tower, and also to take videos out of the window of the Pacific Surfliner, apparently. Shoutout to the actual Cafe Car dude on vocal, who graciously vended me a large beer.

Performance was recorded live and mixed in Ableton. FX used: Ableton Conv Reverb, Ableton Delay, Moog MF-108M ClusterFlux pedal and a bit of EQ/compression."

Re-creating the Weird Synth Loop from MEXICAN RADIO by Wall Of Voodoo

Published on Jun 5, 2018 peahix

"Recently I was asked to make an instrumental version of Wall Of Voodoo's 'Mexican Radio.' Since I was not allowed to use any samples or audio from the original, I figured if I could nail the weird synth loop you hear at the beginning of the song, the rest of it would be fairly straightforward. I found that by slowing down the original to half speed, I could hear enough details in terms of the notes, oscillator tuning, and timbre that re-creating it was quite simple. The original was apparently done with a Minimoog and an Oberheim sequencer, with the Minimoog run through a guitar amp. Here I'm using a Sequential Circuits Pro-One with its own onboard sequencer. At the end you can hear a bit of the final product, with FX applied (via plugins). I'll post the full version of the final result soon, but for now I figured this little detail of the song might make for a fun mini-tutorial."

StepPolyArp Gets Audio Unit Support with StepPolyArp Unit

iTunes: StepPolyArp Unit - Laurent Colson

"StepPolyArp Unit" is a real-time polyphonic and polyrhythmic MIDI step arpeggiator and step sequencer. It can be used as a standalone application or an Audio Unit MIDI effect plug-in.

The application and the plug-in can operate as a step arpeggiator by automatically generating melodic patterns from played notes or chords, or as a step sequencer that doesn't require MIDI input to play.

Unlimited presets can be saved on a local device and synchronized to iCloud. Each preset contains 16 patterns, 5 customizable polyrhythmic step controllers, and a 32 steps event matrix with 11 polyphonic and polyrhythmic lines driving the arpeggiator engine.

The application supports full internal and external MIDI connections for input and output, Audiobus MIDI sender, MIDI filter routing, Ableton Link sync, and MIDI clock source sync. An internal sound bank is included.

The Audio Unit MIDI effect plug-in supports multiple instances. A compatible host is required to run the plug-in. The host needs to support the Audio Unit MIDI effect format.
