PITTSBURGH MODULAR // MICROVOLT 3900 ANALOG SYNTH - YEP!

Published on Aug 21, 2018 soundseasy

"In this video we have a look at the new stand alone semi modular analog synth from Pittsburgh Modular - Microvolt 3900

The Microvolt is a single oscillator fully analog synth with a waveform mixer featuring, Sine sawtooth pulse width and wave folder. It has a super slow LFO and function generator that can be either a standard or cycling envelope. This Synth is fat and grungy yet is also very musical. It has an on board arpeggiator."

Benge FZ10M

"I set up the Casio FZ10-M (an FZ-1 in a rack) and tried to get my head round it. Its certainly not intuitive to use! (common amongst late 80s / 90s systems of this power). Its a pretty interesting prospect once you get used to the menus. Here I am using an additive sine wave oscillator with a slow envelope, and I assigned the mod wheel to control the very nice resonant LPF

I'm using the Sequential Prophet T8 to control it because the wooden keyboard makes the Casio feel more luxurious

PatchenĂ s Nikol - Complex Envelopes Using VCAs

Published on Aug 21, 2018 Bastl Instruments

"In modulars, VCAs are mostly used to set the volume of an audio signal. In this video Nikol shows how they can be used to combine simple shapes to form more complex control voltage curves."

ANA by Mystic Circuits

Published on Aug 21, 2018 Mystic Circuits

"At it’s core, Ana is a collection of ring modulators and other signals based on these ring modulators. Two inputs to Ana yield six outputs, each one a different process of these two inputs. By varying one of the front panel controls, all six outputs are changed simultaneously. If you have been looking for a slim, multi-function device to add both utility and a dose of weirdness to your workflow then Ana is the swiss army knife module for you."

Additional details via Mystic Circuits

"ANA is a utility module comprising six functions that combine two inputs. These functions are:

MIN – compute the minimum of the two input voltages

MAX – compute the maximum of the two input voltages

VCA – compute the XOR, or multiplication the two input voltages

MAG – compute the difference between the two input voltages.

STEP – perform a track and hold based smooth/ stepped process from the two inputs

BOX – perform a bipolar comparator process resulting in a 3 level square wave.

New Sumu Synth Coming from Madrona Labs

via the Madrona Labs newsletter:

"Sumu coming.

With the plugin updates completed, I'm now working full-time on the next software instrument, Sumu. It's going to be the last plugin in the patcher-in-the-middle format that Madrona Labs introduced with Aalto way back in 2010. Granular synthesis, as implemented in Kaivo, lets you decompose a sound into vertical segments (grains) each capturing an instant of the whole sound. A sines plus noise decomposition, used in Sumu, is a complementary tool that does very much the opposite, tracking individual sine wave partials of a sound horizontally through time in what's called spectral analysis.

Working with spectral data in a patchable environment has long been limited to the users of more general-purpose tools like Kyma and Max/MSP. With Sumu I'm designing a fixed set of modules that work in harmony together to make spectral sculpting a breeze."

"Summer Sale!

Greetings from the Pacific Northwest USA where it's summertime, and where the birds are singing a pretty song. Oh wait, that's Mixmaster Morris on in the background. Yes, ambient music of a wide variety of vintages and moods has been keeping things cool for me lately in the Labs and I'd be very pleased to help bring more into existence. Maybe you'd like to make some, using excellent instrument plugins, purchased at a discount? You've come to the right place.

A summer sale is currently in effect, so from now through the end of this month (August, in case you're not keeping track) Aalto, Kaivo and Virta are all 30% off their usual prices. Use the code PARTICLES on the product pages to get your discount. Until August 31.

Software updates.

Updates to all three instruments were sent out last week, and these fix a few long-standing issues that took some serious quality time here to resolve. MIDI and MPE compatibility, alternate scale handling, and a grip of minor UI issues all went under the knife and I hope that the resulting releases will be the most usable and compatible yet. As always, your feedback is welcomed via the forums or directly to support at madronalabs.com.

Because the plugins share so much code under the hood, I decided that a unified version number system makes more sense and so Kaivo and Virta have taken a larger leap to match Aalto at v1.8.3.

Thanks to the very kind help of Kurt and Carla at Symbolic Sound, there is now an update to the Soundplane software that fixes a Kyma connectivity issue. In addition to improving matters for Kyma owners, the change in OSC connection setup will allow playing Aalto or the other instruments on a different computer via Bonjour / Zeroconf. If this idea excites you, please grab the new release from the Soundplane forum and feel free to get in touch with any questions.

In very related news, Kiyoung Lee and Ha-young Park are going to be performing a new piece for Soundplane and Kyma at KISS2018 in Santa Cruz.

Fashion, beep beep.

Did you know there are still Aalto T-shirts? It's a good look for Fall, in my biased opinion."

Bob Moog Foundation Moving to Location of the Future Moogseum

via The Bob Moog Foundation

"August 21, 2018 (Asheville, NC) — Marking its twelfth anniversary, the Bob Moog Foundation has announced it will be moving its headquarters to a new space in the heart of downtown Asheville. The new location at 56 Broadway Street will be home to the Foundation’s operations, and the future home of its long-awaited Moogseum.

The Foundation’s offices will relocate to the new space this October, with monthly events and a pop-up Moogseum store planned shortly thereafter. The Moogseum is expected to open in early 2019.

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to expand our mission through this new public space,” remarked Michelle Moog-Koussa, Executive Director of the Foundation. “The new location will be an ideal venue for inspiring people through our extensive archives and our varied educational initiatives. Both our offices and the Moogseum will benefit greatly from being part of the vibrant downtown Asheville community, and the millions of visitors that it hosts each year. We look forward to enriching Asheville’s cultural offerings by sharing the legacy of Bob Moog with tens of thousands of visitors every year.”

Since its inception 12 years ago, the Bob Moog Foundation has been a force for science education, historical preservation, and creativity. It has inspired over 10,000 elementary school students with the science of sound through its experiential 10-week curriculum, Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool, as well as preserving thousands of documents, photos, memorabilia, and a vault of vintage instruments. The Foundation has assisted with numerous historical books, including integral contributions to two upcoming biographies about Bob Moog, and played a formative role in creating the upcoming documentary, Electronic Voyager.

'The Moogseum will represent a convergence of the Foundation’s many ongoing projects, as well as opening the door to a wide range of new possibilities,' concluded Moog-Koussa. 'We are truly excited for the opportunity to share the Foundation’s efforts with a wider audience.'

The 56 Broadway location currently houses the Black Mountain College Museum and Arts Center, which is moving to a new location at 120 College Street."
