Review: Octatrack at year 8 - Is it still worth it?

Published on Jan 14, 2019 loopop

"With plenty of upgrades and 8 years after it was released, is the Octatrack still worth it? This review attempts to find out, in light of a few other instruments that have come out recently.

The review is split up into two parts, first, the top 10 features I think still make it stand out, and then a deeper look at what the user experience “cost” is in terms of complexity.

There are a few sampling and LFO tricks used in this video, all of which can be found in my In-Complete Book of Electronic Music Ideas, Tips and Tricks (hint: it's in-complete because it's always being updated…):

Hive 1.2 - The Wavetable Update

Published on Jan 14, 2019 uheplugins

"While this update is focused on the introduction of wavetable scanning, it also includes other new features, bugfixes, and almost 500 new factory presets.

Wavetables in Hive are easily selectable as oscillator waveforms and controlled in the Hive hexagon. There are many features available to shape the waveform any way you wish: from manual scanning to modulatable controls.

As a plus: a proprietary wavetable scripting language!
This update also includes our new preset browser with tagging support, a new XY section for more performance control with intelligent auto-assignment, new modulation matrix modifiers, VST3 support, and many more improvements."

Waldorf Quantum v PPG Wave 2 2

Published on Jan 14, 2019 100 Things I Do

"So out of interest here I compare the original PPG wave tables on both the Waldorf Quantum & the PPG Wave 2.2. Thanks to Retrosound for the wave table scans.

The Quantum can do a lot of things that just were not possible in 1982 and the PPG Wave has those amazing analog filters & 8 bit fuzz and aliasing to its sample playback. Its still quite cool how in the same ball park they can sound when compared directly and being so different in design :D

Hope you enjoy"

Guru Meditation #00000001.48414E53 (Mangrove, Plaits, Morphagene)

Published on Jan 13, 2019 Svenbørt

"Two Mangroves and Plaits form broken chords sequenced on Earthsea. One Mangrove additionally modulates Formant on the other Mangrove, controlled with a Maths LFO through Cold Mac. One of the Mangroves is being recorded into Morphagene and played back, while manually manipulating Vari-Speed. Morphagene's output is processed through Disting Mk3's bit crusher. While manipulating Morphagene's Vari-Speed recording on Morphagene is reactivated, causing the continuously re-recorded singal to decay until there is only a crackle left."
