Revisiting my Roland Boutique - 9 JP 08 Jupiter Synth tracks in an Ableton Live Jam

"Roland announced their JU 06A this week, and from what I can tell it seems to be a fairly polarizing product, along with the entire Boutique line. A lot of people have strong opinions about the Boutiques. I got my JP-08 a few weeks after it came out, some 3 years ago. I have my gripes with the product but I've also had some fun with it. After reading some peoples reactions to the JU 06A I decided to revisit my JP 08 and give myself a fun little project with it. I wanted to make a jam using only the sounds from the JP 08. The drums are from a simple custom drum rack in Ableton, but all melodic instruments were performed using the JP 08s interface into my computer. There are 9 instances in total of the JP 08 on this track. I spent about 2 hours working on the melody, recording and giving it a quick mix. There are no individual instances of EQ on this track. The only effects I used were a little delay, reverb, and a filter on the end of the track, with a quick mastering preset from my Waves Abbey Road Mastering Plug in.

Pulling the JP 08 back out after being on the shelf for a while brings back my original sentiment. Its fun, a great idea, and captures the essence of the Jupiter. But the faders and pots are excruciatingly small. You have to be so fine with your movements otherwise you modulate way more than you intend to. The portability is nice but the keys are really useless if you want to do anything more than just fiddle around. I don't think the Boutiques are a complete swing and a miss, but rather a cool idea with some unfortunate flaws.

At the end of the day, it really just comes down to sound with any instrument. Nevermind the melodic structure of my little track if it's not your cup of tea. You tell me, how does the Roland JP 08 sound completely on its own?"

Vermona '14/Hildegard von Bingen: "O Quam Mirabilis Est"

"Hildegard von Bingen's fantastic "O Quam Mirabilis Est", performed on the Vermona '14. Beautiful melody. And such a great tone from the '14: perfectly suited for this kind of music. I decided to put myself in this video; I don't usually do this, as I like the focus to be the music/instrument - but in this instance I'll go with music + face. I'm wearing all-black to minimize distraction.

At certain points the lighting/balance of the camera is altering itself; excuse this.

There really is a case to be made for Gregorian Chant on synth. I can't think of a better way of not only performing great pieces of music (I'm still considering doing a concert of Gregorian Chant on synth, or possibly recording an albums' worth) - but also demonstrating the pure, raw tone of an instrument. There's no hiding with music like this. Very exposed - which is possibly also its beauty.

PS the score is up on the wall (out of sight of the camera). Hence I'm looking up throughout this performance/recording.

And more - MIDI CC control for MRCC, CV Clock Out, CC LFOs, "Light Show" mode & algorithmic MIDI note modifiers. Details to follow as development progresses.

The OLED screen, navigation buttons and encoder are intended to "future proof“ the MRCC. We will monitor the MIDI 2.0 spec, and as features are adopted by the industry we wish to provide FW updates where possible.
Latest Project Status

As of launch of this Kickstarter, for hardware we have created a breadboard prototype, a hand built prototype on perf board, and the latest prototypes are PCB assemblies with a socketed processor board and socketed OLED display (pictured above). All hardware features on the latest prototype are fully functional (with a couple of blue wires). The next step for hardware development is to start PCB layout with the microcontroller and OLED display down on our own PCB rather than socketed. We need to adjust port spacing and get mounting holes where we need them. We'll also evaluate if we will stay with a 5V DC input or add another voltage regulator to accept a wider range of input voltages.

We plan to make a prototype enclosure soon that reflects the proposed design language. We'll post pictures as soon as we have it.

On the software side, MRCC is routing MIDI with no issues, from any of the inputs and outputs including USB host and PC. We'll be demonstrating this at Knobcon 8 in Chicago this week! There's a functioning MIDI status screen, and some filters are implemented as a proof of concept. There's still work to be done to optimize the user experience with navigation on the display. We want a tight relationship between the button presses and what's reflected on the display so you will see exactly what information you need when you need it. Now that we have the new prototypes, this work can begin. After that, implementing configurable MIDI filters, MIDI effects and we have some really cool ideas for MIDI diagnostics features.
