Performance Music Systems SYNTAR Turns 40

via @sdf_pubnix

"it’s been 40 years since the Performance Music Systems SYNTAR was introduced at the #namm show in #1980 by george mattson - bob #moog even got to try it out #keytar #namm2020 #eml #analog #synthesizer #ymo #rydeen #cover"

Check out previous posts featuring the Syntar here.

The Syntar was the first self-contained synthesizer keytar. Before the Syntar, keytars were controllers. The Syntar was created by George Mattson of Mattson Mini Modular. There was a keyboardless version of the Syntar called the SWAN, or Syntar Without a Neck. A SWAN II was announced back in 2018, under development with Division 6.

Update: you can find a great article on the Syntar at Carbon111.com here, and an interview I did with George Mattson way back in 2006 here.

Data Run [Cover] - Boutique / Circuit / Crave / MC-101 / PRO-1 / TR-8

Published on Jan 24, 2020

"This track was the theme tune to on of TV-am's early Saturday morning show, Data Run - 1983-84

Music by Vince Clarke, Sung by Alison Moyet, all I can find on the web is a couple of 40+ second videos of this track, I thought it was deserving enough to be fleshed out a little...

Thank you to kvfive for help with some of the audio samples.

As always, the track is played 'live' in one take - with no DAW, editing or post production.

"Bueller? Bueller?

Everyone has probably heard or seen this sampler at some point in their life (whether they knew or not) Probably most famously used by Depeche Mode, but its was the prime choice for many bands in the 80's. It had great sounding sample libraries to cover most of your bases. Or you could sample your own sounds in. It recorded at a whopping 8-bits with a total of 17.5 seconds. That might not sound like a lot by today's standards but it had a special quality that gave it a distinct character. The real magic came from the analog VCFs and VCAs that finish out the signal chain. On top of all that, it was also 8 part multi-timbral (also 8 voice polyphonic) with a built in sequencer. This could essentially run your most of your show back in the day!

This particular unit is in really great shape and had the original top 5 inch floppy drive replaced with a much faster and larger digital drive. The USB stick includes a bunch of virtual disks with samples on them.

This Emulator was recently serviced and looked at. The power harness of the drive was fixed and the electronics of the unit were inspected and are working properly. The built in floppy drive has been disconnected but is working fine and can be reconnected in place of the digital drive if desired."

"This amazing sounding duo-phonic synth is fitted in DIY casing with a CME midi-keyboard (original keys removed), and modified with CV/gate, CV LPF/HPF Filter CV control, x2.

Everything is wired using a Kenton Pro -2000 MKII cv-midi interface (which has a build in LFO and more), enabling Midi/USB control , either as two separate mono synths (i.e, Minikorg 700s) or as a duo phonic synth. Separate control of "upper" and "lower" both CV/gate (notes) and HPF and LPF- filters."

Buchla Music Easel - A Tree in the Backyard is Missing

Published on Jan 24, 2020 Jae Ryan

"A slow ambient piece on the Easel. The Easel runs through my Chase Bliss pedal board as usual with Darkworld providing reverb/degradation, MOOD providing a little granular bit (being sequenced by the easel) that also runs through the MOOD's reverb & a little loop from Blooper that comes in much later.

Since the pedal chain is mono, I decided to also mic up my room (in stereo) with my zoom recorder to add a little width and depth. I chose a location that was bright and lacking bass so that the stereo to mono collapse would be a little less drastic and I think it worked out great,

If you do take the time to listen, I'd like to apologize in advance for the parts that get somewhat harsh and also for the terrible camera placement since my arm is in the way for half the performance!"
