Patch of the Week 44: Using Nu:Tekt NTS-1 as Korg monologue MULTI Engine Oscillator

Published on Feb 7, 2020 Korg

"The MULTI engine oscillator in the NTS-1 is the same as on Korg prologue and minilogue xd, meaning it can load custom oscillators created with the SDK. Here’s how to combine NTS-1 and monologue together into one synth."

Synth Rorschach #71: Terrapin Station

via Terrapin Station

Terrapin Station is the ninth studio album by the Grateful Dead and the name Terrapin is close to Tcherepnin, aka Serge Tcherepnin of Serge modular. Note the triangular shapes created by the bars holding around the speakers. Reminds me of Serge modular synthesizers producing sound.  The rows on the left almost symbolize a touch interface as well as patch points. The black and gold reminds me of Make Noise which pays tribute to "West Coast" synthesis which Serge was a part of. Pretty cool. Check out the Synth Rorschach label for more.

On a related note, check out the vintage Black Panel Serge from Cal arts here.

OBXa pure, dry and raw, 50 sounds

Published on Feb 7, 2020 synthlegends

"Maybe this is my ultimate OBXa video with my favourite 50 own programmed patches. Enjoy my improvised concert of brass, strings, pads, leads, basses, pianos, sweeps and drones. I recorded the OBXa pure, dry an raw without any effects, plug ins, mastering or equalizing. You just hear it as it is, stereo into the audio interface. The OBXa is one of my favourite synths wiht magical tones and orchestral epic sounds. Thanks for wathching again, CU!"

Best Ambient Synth Shootout #78: Kawai K1r - Song 2

Published on Feb 7, 2020 Christian's Sonic Spaces

"This is the second song with the K1r. It's a 16 voice 8-part multitimbral synthesizer based on 256 PCM waveforms. One interesting feature is the ringmodulation (AM) between two oscillators.

I used for the recording the following FX chain:
K1r - Alesis Philtre - Pigtronix Echolution 2 Deluxe - GFI System Specular Reverb 2. Depending on the recorded track some FX are deactivated

The signal went through a Presonus StudioLive 16.0.2 into the PCfor recording. To create the complete song I recorded consecutively several stereo tracks. The final song was then mastered with a bit EQ and compression on some tracks and some limiting on the master track.

Well, I decided to go back to the basics, but at the same time make something useful for the synth community and do a kind of competition (I like competitions;-). What's my best synth for ambient music :-)"

How to use a Raspberry PI as a sample-based synthesizer / ROMpler

Published on Feb 7, 2020 Floyd Steinberg

"How to use a Raspberry PI as a Sample Synthesizer / ROMpler, using Audacity, SWAMI and QSYNTH. Also: How to use an external USB audio interface with your Raspberry PI. Table of contents below!

In this video, I'm solving the problems with my audio interfaces I encountered in my last video, install some audio software and build a sample-synthesizer (think Korg M1, or any workstation synth) from scratch, creating a string orchestra sound on the way. There's a handful of audio examples of the piano&strings variety in this video.

Table of contents:

00:00 audio example 1: Rhodes electric piano
00:43 introduction
01:18 hardware needed
01:52 installing the USB audio interface correctly
02:33 JACK/qjackctl setup
03:24 installing apps (Audacity, SWAMI, QSYNTH)
04:48 getting some free sound fonts from the web
05:27 loading sound fonts into qsynth and setting up the MIDI channel assignments
05:59 audio example 2 (from the Yamaha SY85 patch collection, see links below)
08:58 capturing your own samples
09:50 creating your own sound font with SWAMI
12:11 loading the sound font into qsynth

The Future of Synthesis - Physical Modeling and Expressive Musical Instruments | NAMM 2020

Published on Feb 7, 2020 Under the Big Tree

"This panel on physical modeling at NAMM was a fascinating talk, with luminaries from the industry: Jordan Rudess, Roger Linn, and Dr. Julius Schwartz from CCRMA, among others.

Each of the five panelists delivers a presentation on their approach to physical modeling, expressive musical instruments, or the intersection of the two. Hilarious hijinks ensue.
