Restoring TWO Sequential Circuits Prophet 10 synths and stacking them with MIDI (40 Oscillators)!

Published on May 8, 2020 Bell Tone Synth Works

"The techs at Bell Tone Synth Works vintage synth repair workshop recently restored TWO amazing Sequential Circuits Prophet 10s and since we also retrofitted both with MIDI, we decided to chain them together to create a 20-voice, 40-oscillator monster polysynth! Here's an overview of what goes into restoring one of them, and a demonstration of the 'Prophet 20' in action, also featuring our lovely Hawk HE-2150 stereo tape echo. This is like playing FOUR Prophet 5s at the same time!

Sound demonstration starts at 6:42
(in case you don't care about the 'tech stuff')

Metalbox Psycho LFO Frac Module

"A modulation source as unique as it's name. Four square wave oscillators are mixed together to create a pseudo-random voltage sequence. A built in slew processor allows the Psycho LFO to produce both stepped and smooth voltages. Very useful when you need another hand or just want to add a little mayhem to a patch.

Controls:

Rate - determines rate of one of the onboard oscillators
Glide - controls smoothness of output voltage from stepped to smooth
Range - determined overall output level of Psycho LFO
I/O:

Output - outputs a random voltage from 0 to approx 10v
Frac spaces: 1

Current draw: 15ma

NOTE: this is a Frac Rack module (not a eurorack module)... It needs +-15V power supply"

Black Panel Buchla Music Easel

"Beautiful Music Easel that I’m only parting with due to the pandemic situation. This Easel is a professionally built Roman clone consisting of a 208r and 218r in very limited black PCBs and an era-appropriate (70s) Halliburton “almost zero” style case in powder coated matte black. The knobs, sliders, and jacks all follow a greyscale color scheme that looks very cool and is (in my opinion) just as easy to navigate as the stock color system.

This Easel has had several upgrades from the original Roman specifications including an infinite sustain mod, boops new card 12 which improves the spring reverb and headphone output, and rewiring the second output directly to the Complex Oscillator for a separate dry out. It is calibrated and tracks over 5 octaves.

Sale includes the Easel, power supply, gooseneck lamp, one blank program card, 10 shorting bars, and several banana cables.

Keep in mind this is a handmade unit and, while in excellent condition, is not cosmetically pristine. The case is nearly 50 years old and has a couple of minor dents, although the powder coating is relatively fresh. It is functionally perfect and one of the best sounding Easels I’ve ever heard. I wish I could hold onto this one, because it really is something special. I’m simply breaking even at this price, so it is relatively firm. Don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions. Thanks for looking!"

"This synth model was introduced by New York's Octave Electronics in 1981, and this particular unit is dead clean and sounds fantastic!

The Kitten is a vintage single VCO analog mono synth. Its a rare bird indeed as Octave electronics was around from ~1975-1985.

Even the faux-wood panel sides are in fantastic original condition on this unit.

The only cosmetic issue is the serial number plate is starting to peel up a bit from the left, you can see this in the photo of the power switch."
