elta music pm-02 exploration

impurfekt

"the elta music pm-02 is a eurorack version of the recent polyvox-m desktop unit. it is a simplified version of the original polyvoks synthesizer; possessing similar oscillator and filter circuitry.

this synth is my first in-person exposure to the polyvoks family. it certainly lives up to its reputation. the oscillators are raw and dirty (though cleaner when patched out to other modules). the filter is dirty and has the most violent resonance i've ever heard. the envelope is nice and snappy. the unit is gorgeous and built like a tank. it has enough jacks to easily incorporate other modules.

while i enjoyed using the pm-02 i found the filter lacking in musicality. it's generally rough and dirty (not a bad thing); and adding resonance just makes it louder and dirtier. i was pleased by the saw and square oscillators. the square can sound nice and woody. to me the triangle oscillator sounds more like a muted saw than a triangle. i struggled to create bell-like tones for example.

due to the general character of the filter i've decided to look at other options; but if you like the tone of this synth it's an excellent choice. it's well built and excels at hard, sharp, dirty, nasty sounds.

filter sweeps (low pass) at 0:15
filter sweeps (band pass) at 5:26
saw arp at 8:48
bass line at 12:02
triangle arp at 16:11
band pass lead at 21:08

Analog synth vibrato with hand movement

GS Music

"We connected an accelerometer to the pitch CV input on the new GS Apollo synthesizer and this is what we got.
The accelerometer module was slightly modified. Some filters were added in order to achieve a better response.
No modulation wheel or aftertouch was used."

Quilter Labs PANOPTIGON CHORD CONTROLLER

Quilter Labs PANOPTIGON CHORD CONTROLLER Unboxing & Demo

01:16 - Optigan Mode Demo (Cha Cha Cha)

"Here's a quick unboxing & demo of Quilter Labs' new Panoptigon Chord Controller, available for purchase here

This is a small MIDI controller that replicates the functionality of the Optigan chord button panel. You can use it in conjunction with a standard MIDI keyboard to control Panoptigon. You can also use it with iOptigan (requires an additional 3rd party MIDI to Lightning interface) or any other MIDI sound module.

In "Optigan" mode, the PCC controls a standard Optigan format disc. In "Orchestron" mode, the chord buttons send chord MIDI data to play simple sustained chords to either an Orchestron disc or any MIDI sound module. In "iOptigan" mode, the PCC is mapped to control the iOptigan app (https://optigan.com/ioptigan/). All three modes can be set to either "Normal" for momentary operation or "Radio" for latched operation.

In this video I demonstrate the "Optigan" and "Orchestron" modes. A full demo of the 'iOptigan' mode will be coming soon.

At the end, there's a nod to all the Minecraft / Little Big Planet fans- a quick improv on 'Chirp.' :)"

"What are Amiga samplers?

Over the course of the Commodore Amiga's active lifespan, a great many samplers (also known variously as sampler carts/cartridges, sound cards, audio digitisers, audio interfaces, etc) were manufactured to exploit audio capabilities that were unmatched by any other home computer of its time. In 1989 an Amiga 500 with a cheap 8bit parallel-port sampler gave you the means to produce professional sounding music in your bedroom for a few hundred pounds - about the same as it cost to hire a recording studio for a few days. Acid house and techno were exploding; hardcore, jungle and drum'n'bass were just around the corner. Even if your sample-based Amiga music wasn't quite professional sounding by the standards of audiophiles and hi-fi enthusiasts and the old-fashioned music industry, it was probably good enough for underground clubs and illegal raves! Countless dance, bass and electronic music superstars got their start with an Amiga and a cheap sampler.

Some samplers back then cost a lot of money and offered advanced features or higher quality than the rest, although there was (and still is) a fundamental limit to the sound quality it's possible to squeeze out of an Amiga. This project is a clone of the typical low-budget sampler design that flooded the market in the late 1980s and early 1990s. They're often referred to as 'carts', but they're actually not cartridges: they're usually small 25-pin parallel port dongles whose circuit boards and connectors are housed in the type of plastic shell that systems like the C64 and the VIC-20 used as cartridge housings. But some manufacturers called them cartridges, and we've been calling them carts for decades, so we'll stick with that. Some live in separate boxes attached by a parallel extension cable to the Amiga's printer port, and some connect to both parallel and serial ports, or even to a joystick port, as a hacky but clever way of getting up to 16bit resolution. Interesting stuff, but out of this project's scope for now!

The common features of these cheap sampler carts were:

8bit sample resolution
Stereo or mono
Typical maximum sampling rate of ~55Khz in mono (~37Khz for stereo)
Usually claimed to feature impressive SNR, anti-aliasing filters, and special ~90Khz frequency modes (sometimes these claims were even true!)
The feature set of the Open Amiga Sampler is:

8bit sample resolution
Mono
Typical maximum sampling rate of ~52Khz
Input amplifier with variable gain"

Send Me An Angel by Real Life COVER performed on an Oberheim OB-8 and Sequential Pro 3 with vocals

Sean Christopher Evoking Emotion with Synthesizers

"Oh how I loved this song and album (Real Life's Heartland) back in the 80's as a teenager, and Send Me An Angel has to be in my top ten pop songs of that entire decade. In fact, I recommend that you buy Heartland if you love this song. Needless to say, I've always wanted to cover this piece and finally got around to it. For synth bass duties I used my Sequential Pro 3 and for everything else synth I used my beloved Oberheim OB-8 which did a fantastic job recreating those 80's synth patches. For drums and guitars I used NI's Kontakt and Battery.

A big thank you to Tim Murphy for providing the lead vocals. Until this cover, Tim has not sang for over 20 years, but with a little coaching from my wife gave us a great performance IMO. Also thank you to my wife, Ann Marie, for providing the "Angel" vocals. I provided additional bass vocals underneath the chorus and 2nd verse.....which luckily for you the listeners isn't too loud. LOL"

And the original followed by the '89 version with a Sequential Circuits Prophet-5

reallifeexperience

"Real Life official video for the Australian release of Send Me An Angel '89. The US version was a reworking of the 1983 video where they edited out original keyboardist Richard Zatorski. Real Life had released Send Me An Angel '88 before they remixed and re-released it again in 1989. This version reached No.51 on the Australian Top 100 chart but got as high as No.24 in Melbourne."

Quick Jam: IO Instruments Eurorack Modules

Perfect Circuit

"IO Instruments has some interesting eurorack modules out and some more on the way. We put together this small system with a few of their modules including the Himalia which is a sound source with 5 generators including filtered analog noise, digital noise, a square wave oscillator, sampler with lots of built in drum sounds and a chord generator. IO also has basic modules like the Themisto VCO, Euporie VCF, Pashiphae ring mod, Sinope VCA and Sponde mixer that add clever and useful extra features. All of the IO modules also have colorful knobs and a halftone paint job that makes them look great together.

We added in a Noise Engineering BIA for the kick, Intellijel Quadrax for envelopes and a Malekko Quad VCA for mixing and extra VCAs. Everything is sequenced with the Arturia Keystep Pro.
