Oblivion - Exploring Moog One with 5U Modular Synthesizer

Ariyo Shahry

"Moog One is an impressive synthesizer. I could have easily done this entire track on the Moog One (except drums). This synthesizer is so powerful and is capable of so much yet it can so easily sit within the mix. In this case it basically made the track. I went from an idea to a wall of warm analog goodness with just a simple patch on the Moog One.

The base of my modular system system is a Synthesizers.com System 66. Over time I've added other modules to my system.

Multitrack recording and drums are programed using Logic Pro X
The video is shot on Fujifilm XT3 camera body with a Fujifilm XF 56mm F/1.2 and Fujifilm XF 16mm F1.4 Lenses.

In this video the following modules are featured:

- Moon Modular M 569 Quad Sequential Voltage Source
- Moon Modular M 543 Stereo Output Mixer
- Moon Modular M 568 Quad Sequential Trigger Source
- STG Soudlabs Sea Devils Filter
- FSFX 102 Granular Audio Processor (5U / MU format adaptation of the Mutable Instruments Clouds)
- Dove Audio WTF Oscillator
- CorSynth C107 Quad Linear VCA/VC Mixer
- Synthesizers.com Q150 Transistor Ladder Filter
- Synthesizers.com Q106 Oscillator (VCO)
- Synthesizers.com Q109 Envelope Generator
- Synthesizers.com Q110 Noise Source"

"Great little USB audio interface w midi. Guitar input and 2 mic inputs w phantom power for condenser mics. Works with Line 6 Pod Farm program. Software has all kinds of guitar and vocal effect and a mixer to control the inputs. The second meter has a tint crack that is barely visible. Work great. Little bit of scratchy noise when moving pots. A little cleaner would do the trick."

"E-MU Systems Emax I Rack Model 1020 w/ new OLED screen and Lotharek HXC SD (SD floppy emulator drive). This EMAX is in great condition and works great.

The only issue is you need to boot the HXC drive first (than power off the unit) then power on again for full operation. The previous owner installed the upgrades so I'm not sure if something is a miss on the installation. Never bothered me enough to fix, works perfect otherwise."

Some pics pre-upgrade posted in 2013 here.

doepfer a-124 vcf5 wasp filter

the doepfer a-124 vcf5 is a 12db multimode filter using the filter circuit of the edp wasp; an analog synthesizer with a black and yellow case built in the seventies. this filter abused digital inverters as analog operational amplifiers leading to distortions and other dirty effects that generate a unique character. it's equipped with a band pass output and a combined low/notch/high pass output.

once i had gathered the filters i was familiar with i started exploring other options to expand my palette. after seeing a few demos i was very intrigued by the wasp filter. it reminded me a bit of an ms-20 filter but with its own brand of nasty. in person the wasp did not disappoint.

the layout is nearly identical to a few other doepfer options which made it easy to pick up and play. it has the mid-forward tone you expect from a 12db filter. high resonance is nasty and unpredictable but won't blow your speakers (which is nice).

where this filter really shines is when you overdrive it. it sounds like a different version of itself; nice and smudgy. you can get away with high resonance and still get an even sound level; which means you can use high resonance in a lot more situations. in that way it reminds me of the korg prologue filter (another filter i adore).

i appreciate a filter with a broad range of character and the a-124 definitely has it. i wouldn't say it's as musical as a moog or roland filter, but it has a very usable range of nasty and can make unique sounding bread and butter sounds as well. a great option if you're looking to add something unique to your toolkit.

filter sweeps (low pass) at 0:05
filter sweeps (high pass) at 2:40
filter sweeps (band pass) at 4:14
filter overdrive at 5:53
filter sweeps thru the polymoon at 8:44
saw arp at 11:06
square bass at 16:28
triangle arp at 23:02

patch notes:
malekko manther growl thru doepfer a-124 vcf5 thru meris polymoon, walrus audio fathom x2 and strymon dig

"In this video the Squaver P1+ synthesizer pedal is controlled via a guitar mono input (through that green compressor pedal) with varying amounts of PWM modulation from the Modulor A1.
First posted on our Instagram page, this is just a widescreen full HD edit of that video. This edit also contains the bass for "Just Can't Get Enough" just before shortly cut out cause I haven't really practiced it much :p"

AJH Synth MiniMod - an 'Introduction' ...and some sounds

DreamsOfWires

"Quite a few people have asked me about the MiniMod system, which modules to start with etc, so I decided to make a simple demo showing some of the typical ways I would use it. This is just about the base MiniMod system, which can be purchased as individual modules, but in this configuration represents a fully modular version of the original Minimoog analogue monosynth. Therefore I'm only using those modules for the purposes of this video. It is directly based on the first 'R.A. Moog' issue of the instrument. If you want to see other modules from the range then check out my other videos or this playlist: [embedded below]

I was planning to make a similar video about my Roland SH-1 too, but it has issues at the moment, and I've no means of getting it serviced. This is one of the disadvantages of owning a 'vintage' synth.

"The Dave Smith Instruments Monophonic Evolver Keyboard edition is a wonderful keyboard synth with lots of control options, oscillator, filter and extensive LFO controls. It is in great condition, and the pots have been upgraded to the click-encoder variety seen in later versions of the unit and other DSI products."
