The Perfect Pad | Twin Peaks Breakdown w/Roland JX-8P, Juno-106 & Jupiter-8

video by Espen Kraft

"The best music to any TV-series in my opinion. Only rivalled by the Miami Vice soundtrack. The synthesizers used in this video are Roland JX-8P, Juno-106 and Jupiter-8. And a touch of Alpha Juno 2 that does the signature bass line in the climax, it's mixed pretty low though.

I've made a version that is not a note for note copy of the beautiful Angelo Badalamenti original, but a free interpretation of how I remember it.
It's also a Roland fest, where I use no other synths than the JX-8P, which is also used for the pad/strings in the original (MKS-70 though), the Roland Juno-106 for the muted bells in the build up and the Jupiter-8 for the bass/piano and solo, but I use the arpeggio and play the arpeggio in a slightly off-beat way, which I show.
All played and recorded by hand, no MIDI involved except for sending a clock pulse to trigger the arp of the Jupiter-8. This comes from the DAW as MIDI and is converted in a Doepfer MSY2 that converts it to a clock/trigger pulse feeding the Jupiter-8.

The first 3 minutes are filmed with a Panasonic M7 VHS camera from 1987 and ripped over to the computer. The edit is done in Premiere Pro. All my demo songs with videos will be shot on VHS from now on. Mostly. Tutorials and breakdowns will still be in HD or half HD. I don't own any 4K cameras nor do I feel I need it. My videos will not be optimized for mobile phones in the near future either. I recommend watching my VHS videos on a CRT monitor. ;-)"

Chicory Tip - Son Of My Father • TopPop

video by TopPop

"'Son of my father' is a song written by German producer Giorgio Moroder with lyrics in German originally published as 'Nachts scheint die Sonne' (In the Night Shines the Sun)

The German lyrics are by Michael Holm and the English lyrics were written by Pete Bellotte. English pop group Chicory Tip, formed in 1967 in Maidstone, Kent recorded the English version in which it became a huge hit n the UK: a # one hit in the UK Singles Chart for three weeks in February 1972.

The band in the original line-up were: vocalist Peter Hewson (born 1 September 1945, in Gillingham); guitarist Richard "Rick" Foster (born 7 July 1946); bass guitarist Barry Mayger (born 1 June 1946, Maidstone); drummer Brian Shearer (born 4 May 1951, Lewisham, South East London); and guitarist and keyboard player Rod Cloutt (born Roderick Cloutt, 26 January 1949, Gillingham, who died in Australia 2017)"

Some vintage Minimoog action. Looks like a Vox Continental on bottom.

Building a Fairlight CMI: Episode 0

video by Syntaur

"Cris Blyth is a brave man. He has a dream of taking a Fairlight MFX and upgrading it to a Fairlight CMI Series III. He's not worried that these machines are tremendously complex, quite rare, have not been made since the 1980s, and cost huge amounts of money back then. He's not worried that the few existing experts on Fairlights strongly recommended that he not attempt this. Will he make mistakes? Absolutely. Will he succeed? We're not sure. But either way, it will be a fun journey."

The Press Release:

Noise Engineering expands growing Versio lineup with Ruina and Electus Versio

Los Angeles, California: Noise Engineering announces Ruina Versio and Electus Versio. Ruina Versio is a new stereo distortion encompassing a number of different distortion concepts, and Electus Versio is a clockable reverb/delay, inspired by the popular Desmodus Versio.

Ruina Versio is available as a dedicated module, or users can update any Versio module to the Ruina or Electus firmwares for free. Customers with any Versio module who wish to download alternate firmwares can make an account at the NE Customer Portal to download any existing Versio firmware to their modules for free.

Ruina Versio is a stereo distortion and effects module, and DSP platform. It includes the Noise Engineering infinifolder (featured on modules like the Basimilus Iteritas Alter), multiband drive and filtering, a phase control, full-wave rectification, a DOOM knob, and a Smoosh button that adds 128dB of gain to the input when pressed. Rearrange the internal signal chain and activate a notch filter with the flip of a switch. All knobs are CVable, and the distortion is stereo in and stereo out, meaning you can use it to process all your stereo modules in your system -- or, run a mono sound into it and use the effects to create stereo width.

Ruina Versio is also part of the Versio family. All Versio firmwares are cross-compatible: just log onto the Noise Engineering Customer Portal to swap any Versio product to any different firmware. There are currently five firmwares available, including delay, reverbs, distortion, and dynamics processing, with many more in the works.

Price: $345; free firmware download on Customer Portal for Versio owners; RV replacement panels $20
Availability: Ruina Versio available for download for Versio owners starting March 18th; hardware ships starting March 25

Electus Versio is a unique atmospheric creation tool: not quite a reverb and not quite a delay, it’s the more aggressive clocked counterpart to the popular Desmodus Versio. It shares most of the same controls with Desmodus, but adds a tap-tempo button, clock input and divider/multiplier, and a switch to choose between three delay structures. It runs the gamut from simple clocked delays to infinite distorted atmospheres and everything in between and beyond. Electus Versio will not be sold as a separate module, but Versio owners can download Electus now as an alternate firmware for free at the Customer Portal.

Price: Free firmware download on Customer Portal for any Versio product
Availability: Electus Versio is available for download for Versio owners starting March 18th.

The Ruina Versio made its first appearance on the 11th.

Noise Engineering Ruina Versio Eurorack Distortion w/ The Patch Pals

video by Perfect Circuit

"Jacob and Wes got their hands on a new eurorack module from Noise Engineering which is a stereo distortion called the Ruina Versio. The Versio modules all use the same hardware but different faceplates and firmwares so you can easily plug your Versio in and change what kind of effect it is. We also used the Desmodus and Imitor Versio in this video for delay and reverb effects.

MakeNoise Strega | First Patch | with Todd Barton

video by Cinematic Laboratory

"After waiting for months for Strega to arrive, it finally came to my doorstep yesterday. As you may see, I've been preparing for its arrival creating cool support footage and video stuff to make it a special experience. I've reached 4K subscribers this week and this 'special edition' video is also a way to say thanks to all of you supporting my channel. I 'stole' Walker's high speed explanation of Strega and slowed it down without explicit official permission.
Last, but definitely not least, I'd like to thank mr. Todd Barton for creating a set of really cool Buchla sounds that match the 'submerged' theme of this video very well. I'll definitely revisit Strega so this is part 01 of a series. Have fun, and see you soon!"
