Memorymoog Sound Design: Part 2

video by wedream2

Part 1 here

"In this second video I talk a little more about sound design, demonstrate mostly new sounds (not shown in first video) as well as a few improved sounds from the previous video, and discuss use of the latched arpeggiator in combination with the cyclic keyboard mode, generating interesting sequences involving multiple triggering of the same key within a repeated pattern."

"Late 70’s Prophet 5 revision 2. Has been modded and we haven’t been able to track down how it was modded exactly. Has MIDI and I was able to control this with an external keyboard. All 5 voices work, has some presets, not sure if they’re original or not....filters work, lfo works, bender works. Has a knob on back (“b range”) that will make the pitch change when you turn it. Has a kill switch on the back that just cuts the sound out. Somewhere along the way this board got a rev 3 heat sink installed in the back. If you are into actually playing these you’ll know that a heat sink is an improvement. The keybed is not in tip top, optimal condition, but still works with the exception of one key. I was told it just needs cleaned and this key will work. This was serviced with a deep cleaning, re-built power supply, some components replaced and some pots disassembled and refurbished. Amazing sound, I only scratched the surface with the video demo. This actually stays in tune way better than you’d probably expect. It will drift from time to time, but after a few tuning cycles, it’s very stable."

Space music: Waldorf iridium, Virus C, Moog Slim Phatty. "Dune Field"

video by Brittle stR music

That Iridium screen is impressive.

"The lead bass and Martian wind are the Iridium, high melody is the Virus C, clave rhythm is the Moog. Sequencing, string pad (the Mono/Poly emulation) and drums are Korg Gadget on the iPad. Images are from NASA and the European Space Agency orbiters and rovers."

I asked The Cripples member Greg what synths were used and he replied with the following:

"Main synths used throughout were a Roland SH-101 or Microkorg through a fuzz factory. A Novation A Station through a Sherman Filterbank was used along side the Roland for tracks 3 and 4. There is also a Nord Micromod on track 2 (also through the Sherman), and a little bit of a Dave Smith Pro 2 on track 3.

The Roland and Microkorg were mostly recorded direct, the other synths were mic’d up through a sputtering 50 year old Ampeg V-2 with blown tubes.

The Sherman is probably the biggest part of how my synth sounds, more than the A Station, but the amp and mic make a huge difference in how it sounds too, as the Sherman has a super hot output, and combined with Ampeg’s tube distortion, gets this overdrivey/filter type of distortion, where it isn’t just clipping the signal into a square wave, it instead retains the characteristics of the A Station input signal, but it adds harmonics and also some random ‘chug’ to the signal, as the tones from both the Sherman and the Ampeg are super frequency and amplitude dependent, and the distortion characteristic wanders around as the input signal decays. The Ampeg also filters out some high frequency content of the A-Station signal. And the Coles mic sounds full and big, and not harsh or boxy like a guitar cabinet mic’d with 57 can sometimes sound, but at the same time having the synth going through a cabinet in a room keeps taking up too much frequency space in the mix, so drums and bass and Ross’s keyboard can all still be heard without doing too much wacky equalization during mixing. (Mixing keyboards with real drums and bass is hard.) The Ampeg is super unreliable at this point though, it is probably at least 50 years old at this point, and it randomly spouts orange flames. I need to take it in to get fixed, but it will probably cost me at least 350 to do so, so it mostly sits."

MMXX T-APE - the first long demo

video by Gecho Loopsynth

1:33 random arpeggiator with octaves and light control
4:20 faster arpeggiator that sounds like a beat
5:46 arpeggiator controlling some glitchy sounds
6:28 "up" and random arpeggiator again
10:00 retuning into a new scale
10:48 playing with the new scale
14:20 nasty noises from bytebeat with tweaked parameters
14:58 a complete automatically generated song
16:34 tuning into radio hell

"This instrument does not really know scales, notes or octaves - it can only manipulate pieces of generated sound according to some simple mathematical rules and your input, using rotary encoders, eight touch sensitive keys and two light sensors.

Synthetic Ambience: DSI Poly Evolver x Octatrack

video by Mason Chrysler

"Recorded some Poly Evolver samples and loaded them onto the Octatrack along with a recording of some water droplets from outside. OT is programmed not all that much for some random ambience. Spring is finally here."

Sequential Artist Spotlight Interview with NATHAN HICKS

You can find the interview on Sequential's website here.

"Working out of a small cluttered studio, Silence_Castor is the alias of musician Nate Hicks. He uses it as a creative outlet and a musical experiment. He utilizes old-school recording techniques, analog synthesizers, and a generous amount of reverb and delay to create music ranging from space themed ambient electronica to funk inspired lofi hip hop. His influences and inspirations include Lorn, Rival Consoles, Radiohead, and Nine Inch Nails.

We chatted with Nathan on how he’s been using the Prophet Rev2 in his music.
