Dave Smith Instruments Prophet '08 String Quartet Patch
Published on Jul 5, 2015 Sacred Synthesis
"This improvisation resembles an earlier one played on the Poly Evolver Keyboard. In this Prophet '08 version, rather than four oscillators of sawtooth, I added one oscillator of square waveform. Amazingly, the one oscillator completely changes the tonal color, making it more of a flute chorus type sound.
This string quartet patch is tame, modest, even conservative. It demonstrates that the synthesizer need not sound bizarre, with constant tweaking of parameters or wild modulations. It's the area of sound design that most interests me - that largely unexplored domain of purely musical tones that resemble traditional instruments, and yet that can be produced only by the synthesizer.
Instrumentation:
DSI Prophet '08 Keyboard
DSI Prophet '08 Module
DSI Evolver Keyboard
Hammond XPK 200L
Reverb from Lexicon MX300
Performed live and recorded directly to CD
All music property of Sacred Synthesis"

Beautiful. Tones that are complex and interesting, while still being musical, are what interest me, too. I believe it was Wendy Carlos who said that a piece of music doesn't have to sound new, it just has to sound good.
