MOOG Little Phatty - MATRIXSYNTH Patch

Remember this post?

A little while ago, Amos of MOOG Music sent me the image. I asked him if it was actually going to be included in the factory presets for the Little Phatty. His answer? Yes. : ) I didn't want to post this until I actually saw it with my own eyes. Sure enough I paid a visit to my local Guitar Center with a friend of mine who just started Toho Monster (Godzilla fans unite!), and there it was. Preset patch #70 is MATRIXSYNTH! So cool. It trips me out to think that this patch will be disseminated to every Little Phatty owner out there and it will be part of the factory restore for years to come. Pretty cool...

Thank you Amos!!!

Some notes from Amos. Suit and Tie Guy, take a look. ;)

"I wrote 40 of the 100 presets, or 40%... actually I just counted 41; I was looking for the patch list and I found a list I'd saved of which ones were mine. In case you're curious:

02 double agent
04 crystal echo
09 chewy bass
14 suit and tie
15 nasal kavity
17 gammaglobulin
19 morning lorry
20 mod karnivale
21 mod kickish
23 mod noisehats
25 guitar gyros
26 bin shaker
28 sample n sync
30 shining eyes
31 bass runner
32 cirque d lune
37 mod gabbakick
38 mod fltrsnare
43 all your bass
49 caspian
50 miss 10
51 puff piece
52 wetwired
53 strung bass
54 allison will
58 modwheel clap
59 mod dropkick
60 punchy bass
63 mad screamer
64 pwnage bass
66 'avin it bass
69 mod dark kick
70 matrixsynth
71 mod theoctave
74 malletbreath
75 vintage filth
77 forth to 5th
83 syncingslowly
84 sneaky bats
88 mod headphase
89 cube roots

There are several in-jokes, band references and general nerdiness in here...

I have a patch named for Suit & Tie Guy, one is in tribute to Goldfrapp (the patch "Allison Will," there is of course All Your Bass (are belong to us); Mad Screamer is sort-of a Siouxsie Sioux reference (the song "Mad-Eyed Screamer" by the Creatures), Sneaky Bats is named after UK goth-tronic band Sneakybatmachine... and "guitar gyros" is just a bad pun (that's hee-ros, as in the Greek sammich).

Cheers,

Amos"

I also thought the following was pretty funny from Amos:
"Hey, I guess this time I can use the factory presets in my own music and not feel like I'm "cheating" ... funny!" Too funny. A true synth-head.

BTW, I wasn't able to get a sample of Matrixsynth as I didn't have a portable recorder handy. If anyone out there gets an LP Stage, feel free to send a sample in. I'm also curious what Suit and Tie sounds like. Hopefully not as good as Matrixsynth! ; ) Title link takes you some more shots on flickr - not the greatest as the lighting was bad, but there you have it. Again, thank you Amos! It really is an honor to be there.

Upate via Amos:
"I forgot one patch/music reference... the patch "Gammaglobulin" was designed to ound like the lead from the goa trance track "Gamma Goblins" by Hallucinogen (or Infected Mushroom, I'm not sure which). There is actually an example of that on our website... I think it's clip number 23 or so on the LP Stage page file player... just go to http://www.moogmusic.com/detail.php?main_product_id=254 and click the "next" button on the file player 23 times to hear it. The later demo clips on that page, while not great musically, are all LP Stage sounds.

-Amos"

  3. Yeah congratulations are in order , but of course now you are cursed forever by having to wince and look down at your wiggling feet the next time you hear some synth purists ragging about sucky presets and their lack of character .... ;-)

but don't feel bad , I'm still exploring the 800 that came with my Matrix 1000, I think I'm up to about 332......then I move on to the 512 that came with the evolver .....I hope I live that long

  4. This is great.
It's well deserved for all your music... um... I mean programming... er...I mean deep understanding of synthesis... uh...

...what exactly did you do again?

  5. It's amazing he can do anything with his apparent duh'ness.

  6. i feel warm and fuzzy inside.

FYI that was an honest statement, devoid of any Indie-OK sarcasm.

i wonder if "Mod Karnivale" is the Karn Evil 9 steel pan minimoog patch.

  7. Suit - Yes it is!
(this is Amos, using my awesome wife's account apparently)

also, "mod headphase" is my Boards of Canada patch... its slow, wobbly and nostalgic. Bin Shaker is named in honor of Ryan Moore, aka the Twilight Circus Dub Sound System (q.v.) and his excellent album "Bin Shaker Dub."

  8. Can these patches be overwritten by the user?

  9. where is the banjo preset?

  10. Damn, someone beat me to the banjo comment.

My browser didn't let me post comments for some reason.

Now, it goes without saying that the Little Phatty can't really do 'Buchla', let alone the 'Buchla Banjo' (which really represents just the smallest corner of the vast Buchlidian 'complex timber space'. Moogs in general have such limited range, after all.

  11. I thought Moog and Guitar Center had a falling out of some sort.

  12. 50 years down the road, when LP becomes a vintage rarity... someone might cover a story about the man behind the LP patches.... and a little story of patch #70...

Woohooo I am happy for you Matrix... Suit & Tie Guy YOU RAWK! :)
