I've seen articles on this instrument but never heard one before. It sounds absolutely incredible and almost lead me to believe that this was a tape-driven instrument like the Mellotron. However, it does indeed seem to be a tube driven instrument. I'm astounded by the range of sounds this makes!
ReplyDeleteJinkies! Have we really progressed all that much in the past 60 yrs after you listen to this? I don't think anything being made now has anywhere near this level of articulation and expression. Maybe it was just a really good player! I would sell all my other stuff for one of these things.
ReplyDeleteStereolab city, man. I guess they owned this record! I always thought of Jenny Ondioline as some hot french girl who was into synthesizers. Ha ha no it was just the inventor's last name. Of course their song with this title has absolutely nothing to do with this instrument. Prolly just liked the name. Dope song though.
And though this record dates from the 50s (as far as I could determine) the Ondioline was invented in 1941... that much more amazing. Someone should track one down and start remaking them.
