Sounds like a Plasticine Saxophone.
ReplyDeleteIt never caught on, because it only plays in tune in a vacuum.
Humans tend to explode when in a vacuum, y'know.
But, y'know, listening to it again, I think it could also be a slide-whistle of the old ones.
It was probably a single oscilator and a few tape machines just like the radiophonic workshop did it or just a simple tape loop or tape delay.

ReplyDeletei met Art Clokey & his family a couple years ago! I think these episodes & music will spill out sequentially as the copyright expires, the first episode was released on March 16, 1957.
ReplyDeletethe music was really the subject of much anguish with film historians because there has never been an official Gumby DVD release with the original music intact. if you rent DVDs at your local rental house, you will be getting CRAP new music, not the musique concrète/analog gems of the original. its a disaster, just read the reviews on Amazon for the box set. however, old VHSs from FHE have the original music and sell used for dirt cheap on eBay. And yes, analog synths are heavy at times.
