Interesting Perspective on Electronic Music

via ARRON aka S-CAT in the comments of this post. Thought it was well said and worth archiving in a post.

"Another point of view.

With so many electronic musical instruments in one setup, you could class the whole lot as a musical instrument. To play this musical instrument "live" is as rewarding as playing say an acoustic guitar and takes as much or if not more time and dedication to be able to achieve the results that you want.

Techno is a form of music that relies on sequencers and drum machines and would not have the same attitude or precise timing if played on traditional instruments, so the term "live techno" is an art form that many will not understand.

Also if a guitarist uses distortion, wah and delay, would this then be considered to be machine music? I think not!

It's a bit like being a conductor.

  2. A bit like the "The Mestro" in Seinfeld.

"I tell ya, I never really understood the importance of the conductor. I mean between you and me, what the hell is this guy doing? Do you really need somebody waving a stick in your face to play the violin? Does that really help you out? I could see how we need him at the beginning. Okay, tap-tap-tap, start. Okay, I can see how you need that. But once we're going, okay, once it's all happening, what do we need him for then? I don't see the cellist looking up, go, "I'm confused. I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do." And the conductor goes, "Do this. Like this" "Oh, okay, thank you very much."

The conductor is the most important part of an orchestra. The job is to keep time in the first instance, as none of the players have click tracks. The next job is to tell each section of the orchestra when to play and how hard or soft. In modern terms the conductor is a sequencer. Each musician would only know how to play the piece of music written in front of them but the conductor would know the complete score and would conduct in his own manner. Take a look on the net for Goldie the drum n bass producers first hand experience at conducting, it may open your eyes a little more.
