Vintage PAIA Modular Synthesizer Filter Effects

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"PAIA 4700 Series filter / effect bank including

4710 Balanced modulator,

4712 Spring reverb,

4730 three-pole filter,

4740 ADSR envelope generator,

PAIA original functions also include: Noise generator, LFO generator, 0-5 adjustable DC power, and Envelope follower.

Plus custom work by www.vansickleaudio.com :

4 channel stereo tube mixer.

Tube preamp with guitar input jack.

Modified Boss OC2 Octave circuit with seperate outputs for low and lower octaves.

High voltage power supply for operating tube circuits.

Comes with several shielded coax 1/8" male interconnect cables (for audio) and single-pin unshielded interconnect cables (for DC control such as ADSR)

My personal favorite uses for this have been with cello and electric piano. It offers many fun effects, but unfortunatly little convenience. At best you can run the outputs of 4 different tones into the mixer and use the mixer to change tones. Not handy for live applications but great if you want a recorded tone that is quite unique."

Most of the modules were serviced at the end of 2012 by CAE in San Mateo with the exception of the Quash's and the keyboard.

The keyboard and the programming were never used and it is unsure if they work. However we were able to get the digital read-out to count. The rest of the modules worked at the end of 2012 but because of the vintage and delicate nature of the PAIA, it is not guaranteed that they are still working."

1977 PAIA 4700 MODEL J MODULAR ANALOG SYNTHESIZER

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"For your consideration is this vintage 100% all original vintage 1977 Paia 4700 Model J modular synthesizer. This impressively complete set includes; the complete modular unit with all original modules, the original keyboard, original banana patch cables, original program tapes and ALL of the original manuals!

This is probably the best example of a Paia 4700 modular you will ever see. It is capable of polyphonic arrangement, custom programming and even an early implementation of computer-generated polyphonic composition, thanks to the digital control system on board.

Modules:
- 4720 Voltage Controlled Oscillator (x3)
- 4730 Multi-modal Filter
- 4740 Envelope Generator (x2)
- 4710 Balanced Modulator (x2)
- 4712 Reverb Module
- 4711 Mixer
- 4770 Watt Block (x3)
- 4761 Wing (x2)
- 2720-5 Control Oscillator/Noise Source
- 8780 Digital to Analog Converter
- 8781 Quad Addressable Sample & Hold

While this set is in perfectly intact and excellent cosmetic condition, the individual modules operate differently to other modular systems i have used, so i will outline the functionality of the modules and you can get assess the working condition! All three 4720 VCO modules operate flawlessly with clear powerful waveforms and accurate pitch tracking. The 4730 filter module is deep, squelchy and performs flawlessly. The 4740 EG modules operate flawlessly with great a,d,s and r timings. The 4710 modulators operate beautifully, a true swiss army knife of a module. The 4712 reverb module is one of the most organic, cavernous analog reverbs i've ever heard and works without fault. The 4711 Mixer operates perfectly. The watt block and wing modules are very stable and have been calibrated to smooth out any supply hum. The 2720-5 LFO module operates brilliantly but seems to have a ridiculously slow oscillation rate on the lowest setting! The noise source is flawless. Now for the stuff I'm not an expert on: the 8780 and 8781 seem to work really well with the keyboard/computer controller system. There is a polyphonic program stored in the controller which can be initiated in a few seconds by entering a few digits on the keypad. The instructions are all included and there is even a whole guide on the programming language included! The functionality of these modules however is dependent on how far you want to go with programming the thing and what codes you enter from the tapes. For this reason it is hard for me to assess whether these modules operate completely flawlessly. They're definitely capable of the kind of thing a moog modular or roland controller keyboard can do though, even with the pre-programs fired up!

As can be seen, the unit is in beautiful condition, was clearly successfully built, and still retains all hardware.

If you are a synth lover, electronically gifted, or a tinkerer with patience, I could imagine no better investment. With modular synths sky-rocketing to the prices of nice real estate, I would suggest grabbing even the more accessible synths while possible.

This modular runs on 110v, but i will provide a 110v transformer which can be used with the system."

Vintage Paia Modular Synth with 20 Modules

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"This listing is for a Paia analog modular synthesizer set that is being sold as-is.
Here's the details: As far as testing the 8700 keyboard, I've hooked it up, and the 8780 module lights up and reacts to it, but I don't have any of the code to program the 8700 keyboard computer. All of the membrane switches on the 8700 work. All of the modules are working, except I couldn't get any signal from the 4710 modulator, although the LED was lighting up, so it's definitely not dead. Could be due to user error. The pitch pots on the oscillators are the multi-turn type, and seems finicky. Other pots, on the reverb and mixer modules, are scratchy. More than enough patch cables are included(audio and CV). Most of the original manuals are included for the modules and the keyboard. Being that the 8700 is only partially tested, and I have no idea what may need calibration or not, I'm selling it as-is.

Here is the module layout of the wings:

VINTAGE PAIA 4700 SERIES

via this auction

"This is what we believe to be a PAIA 4700 series kit that was sold in the 70's-80's. We think it has been upgraded because some of the modules are 8700 series.(but of course we could be wrong on that point)...

The case is hinged and folds open to gain access to the control modules. The left side contains the following modules. Top row from left one 8780 equally tempered da converter and has a 25 pin ITT cannon db 51226-1a plug coming from it. The next three modules are 4720 VCO. Bottom row from left two 8781 QUASH two 4710 balanced modulator and one 4761 WING.

The right side top row from left contains one 4771 regulated power one 4740 envelope generator and one4711 4/2 mixer. Bottom row from left one 4761 wing with a power cord coming from it one unumbered control oscilator and two 4730 VCF."

PAIA vintage analog Modular Synth

via this auction

"This Paia system was assembled to use as a portable electronic music box. It is really small but contains two full voices, plus a 4780 sequencer and a 4712 spring reverb. There are two VCOs, two Bandpass Filters, and two VCAs from the 2700 series. Then there is a 2700 series Sine/PWM and a 4740 ADSR. The power supply and spring reverb are inside the box, but the faceplates will be included, along with some random Paia spare parts. I will also include the original manuals/assembly instructions for the modules. Please note that the reverb is accessible via the two jacks labeled with green tape. Also note that the modules have been modified; the Paia pin jacks have been replaced with 1/8" (3.5mm) jacks to make the system easier to use.

Cosmetically this little modular looks good and all the modules work. HOWEVER, the system is under-powered. The power supply will need to be upgraded for everything to perform to spec. So all the modules work, but you will need more power to use them all together. As you can see in the pictures, all the modules have been modified with 1/8" jacks and some have been modified with extra switches and knobs. The VCOs have tuning knobs and one has a range switch (so it can be used as an LFO). The Bandpass VCFs have range/response switches added. I did not do these mods, but they work and they help make the system more useful"
