Soma Enner Synth Tutorial Lesson 2: Output Section

video upload by EthanJamesMusic

"This is a tutorials series for anyone who wants to learn how to use the Soma Labs Enner body patching synthesizer electronic instrument. If I get a response to this series, I will try to break things down into small videos that are easy to mentally digest and apply to your own electronic music. We will be exploring both east coast tonal and west coast avant-garde uses of the synthesizer. The Enner is especially good at ambience, noise, and soundscapes for film music.
This second video will go into detail about the output section of the synth and show you some of what's possible to do only using your fingers. Please leave a comment with any questions or requests and a like if this was helpful."

BAF 2024: Soma - Enner

video upload by sonicstate

"At Buchla And Friends 2024, Sonic State caught up with Kevin at the Soma booth to find out more about the Enner synthesizer, which, due to increasing popularity, Soma have been ramping up production. The synth boasts a psychedelic aesthetic and excels at generating noisescapes while also offering the flexibility for melodic performances via its (we think copper) touch pads.

Enna is slightly reminiscent of the Lyra synthesizer, but with a pulse output section and a built-in piezo microphone, activated by a large pad. The Enner has a delay line with feedback and time controls for the left and right lines, and Kevin demonstrated the Bizarre Control which adds pseudo random modulation to the delay line leading to some screamy noise textures. The touchplates respond to touch, and Kevin even demonstrated the use of a metal scouring pad to create some crunchy tones. Enner can also be used as an external effects processor, to add some strange to your incoming signal.

Enner Price: 799 USD"

Sci-fi rhythms and ambient: Soma Enner live west coast avant-garde synthesizer electronic music

video upload by EthanJamesMusic

"This is my second run through using the Soma Laboratory Enner instrument, designed by Sistor. The goal was to make something film music appropriate that would work as an ambience outer space soundtrack while also adding the utility of a Boss RC-5 looper pedal to build up more complex rhythms. This synth is very geared towards both drones and rhythms, as well as using the piezo pickup with the case, spring, and rubber bands to make added percussive sounds. I'm very excited to continue exploring and find even more sounds. I'm making a lot of use of the ring modulation inputs for the drones. This synth is patched using touch, and I love the idea of having an instrument that I can use my hands on to create sound and have a direct connection to the music. I am using the west coast technique of starting with something and spinning it out like a centrifuge. I'm processing the sound through an Eventide H9 pedal with some reverb and an a Boss RC-5 looper pedal. Hopefully this camera angle also helps you learn something!"

Loop singing and drumming: Soma Enner live west coast avant-garde synthesizer electronic music

video upload by EthanJamesMusic

"Here is another performance video using the Soma Laboratory Enner instrument, designed by Sistor. My goal for this was to make kind of a tribal ambient sound using my voice into the piezo pickup and by layering non metered finger drumming with a looper pedal, and then morphing into a meditative bass and synth sound. This synth is very geared towards both drones and rhythms, as well as using the piezo pickup with the case, spring, and rubber bands to make added percussive sounds. I'm very excited to continue exploring and find even more sounds. I'm making use of the resonance of the case to layer in my voice and finger drums. Later I fade to a drone layer with rhythm from the click part of the synthesizer. This synth is patched using touch, and I love the idea of having an instrument that I can use my hands on to create sound and have a direct connection to the music. I am using the west coast technique of starting with something and spinning it out like a centrifuge. I'm processing the sound through an Eventide H9 pedal with some reverb and a Boss RC-5 looper pedal. Hopefully this camera angle also helps you learn something!"

Panel layout below.

"LIMITED EDITION in red, hard to find in US

ENNER is a very expressive sound tool that can generate bits, pads, FX, noises, clicks, glitches, but also function as a cool vocal mic with built-in analog FX and much more! A musician with a rich imagination and who’s experienced in playing ENNER can perform an entire exciting gig using just this synth.

As an instrument, ENNER is a unique analog synthesizer with the key principle being that all signals that make sound pass through and are managed by your body. Your hands become the central part of the circuitry. Touching different contact pads with different parts of your fingers and palms with different amounts of pressure, letting signals pass through your body defines the mixing, volume, timbre, feedback and other parameters of synthesis. Human skin has much more complex electric properties than we think. Our skin provides not just resistance but also some capacitive properties and even nonlinear dependence of conductivity from current, its direction and time during which the current was applied. All of this affects the sound, making you the key part of the synthesis process.

All pots of ENNER are metallic and also function as inputs or outputs. Touching a pot can change not only the parameters but also patch the audio signals."
