  1. Perhaps he'll release the product prior to the Mayan BOOM-BOOM event.

  2. Is there a market for physically large hardware synths that cost $4,000? (Beyond Stevie Wonder and Herbie Hancock) This is not a snarky question, i really am curious.

  3. When I listen to this synth, I love even more my Alesis Andromeda wich costs twice less... !!!

I expected a lot from this machine but for the moment, I am really disappointed when I hear these thin sounds not fatter than VST's... Fortunately, the synth looks beautiful but this is not enough ;-)

  4. Doesn't really seem fair to complain that a digital synth sounds like, well, digital synths...

  5. Is there a market for this? Absolutely. He's already sold 50 pre-orders and has recently opened up another 25 additional pre-order slots.

It's not cheap, but it does things that no other synth can do such as the rotor modulation. It's almost like wavetables but with "standard" waveshapes, and the fact that the modulation can go into the audio range is even better.

Add in that it has almost a small monitor's worth of displays and tons of different synth models.

Is it for everyone? No, but consider the cost of a Prophet '08 and a Moog Voyager (both of which I have). The Solaris can more or less cover those sounds and costs less then the their combined price.

I've done live shows with some combination of organ, piano, polysynth and monosynth for years. If I can replace to or three of those with a Solaris that means a lot less hauling stuff around, for example.

So yeah, it ain't cheap, but the value is tremendously high.

(Darn, if I typed any more I'd have my own blog post already done!)

  6. Actually, John has a 100 pre-orders filled, the first 50 were completely prepaid, the second 50 pre-ordered with a $1000.00 deposit.
I believe he already has some deposits on the remaining 25, then the Solaris will go into the retail outlets.

Yes, it appears on the surface to be expensive but, for instance when you add things up, there are probably quite a few modular owners who have spent more to expand their modulars.

John has always addressed the cost question in his posts by saying this isn't meant to be a mass produced synth, nor does he have high expectations for it to sell in large quanities.
That's what the Korgs and Rolands are for, this is a special niche synth and it is the culmination of his dream to design a synth HE would like to have.

The technology is open-ended, and can be expanded through software updates.

For those of us who have pre-ordered it has been a long wait but it won't be long now and I have complete faith it will be everything and more than I envisioned.

  7. I thought he was headlining the Mayan Boom Boom.

Does this synth have an audio in?

  8. @top cat

Cool, I must have missed 25 of 'em somewhere.

    And I'm #0030 :-)
