Inside a KORG DW-8000 with Mouse Waste

via Computer Controlled. Note this was originally sent to the Analogue Heaven email list.

"Has anyone here ever dealt with cleaning mouse waste from a PCB in a synth? I got a DW-8000 today, and the inside is just a mess. Mouse waste everywhere! Chewed up wires. What is the preferred method of dealing with this? I'm hoping to salvage this."

Note: the one thing I brought up on the list and someone confirmed is the risk of disease. Be careful!

  1. I usually start with a dry natural bristle paint brush, like a cheap "chip brush" and dust off as much as I can. Some people will use compressed air to help.

For the mouse waste, you may think about using a dish washer. -If the DW-8000 boards will fit in your dish washer.
I first heard this from a guy at work. He knew a guy that would clean mixing consoles by running the channel strips' circuit boards through the dish washer.

Google searches bring skeptics, but some confirmation and tips:
Use hot water. Do NOT use detergent. Do NOT use heated drying. Place circuit boards vertically (not flat).
Allow to dry well - a few days, say some.
It would also be good to remove the battery before doing so.

And some hand wash their circuit boards in the bathtub or sink with distilled water.

  3. Regarding cleaning mouse droppings, the one thing I brought up on the list and someone confirmed is the risk of disease. Be careful if you ever run in to this as well. I'll update the post for those that skip the comments.

  4. I use a deep pore cleanser lotion. In the shower I use a water activated gel cleanser, then a honey almond body scrub, and on the face an exfoliating gel scrub. Then I apply an herb-mint facial mask which I leave on for 10 minutes while I prepare the rest of my routine. I always use an after shave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older. Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion.
