Roland SH-201 - No LCD and Zero Menus?
James of Retro Thing has an interesting point on the new Roland SH-201 - there are no menus and there is no LCD. Everything is right there out front. I had to do a double take to believe it, but he's right. But then what if it has hidden menus only accessible via pressing different combinations of buttons. Eeek! Hopefully not. I'm more curious as to how it will sound compared to the SH-32 and JP8000. Will it cover both or lean towards one more than the other.

Nope, no arcane menus. It's not available on the US site, but here's a link to the manual at Roland Japan: [warning: pdf]

Thank God! Finally no menus!!!
ReplyDeletePrices for vintage, menu-free Roland gear have been on the rise for some time... Roland finally got a clue.

Actually, Roland got a clue awhile ago with the SH-32. They tried to make everything accessible with knobs on the front, but they ended up with two 7-segment LED's, and the usual 2 letter abbreviations for various parameters that look like they're written in klingon. I found these really annoying, but even more so on my evolver.
ReplyDeleteFrom what I heard, it has pretty much the same sound generation engine as the JP-8080, which I thought also had 10 voice polyphony, so that makes sense. And people still pay good money for used JP-8080's because they sound great, so that's not bad thing at all.
ReplyDeleteThere could be changes that have significant effects on the sounds, though, but I don't expect to find a sample based engine as in the SH-32 here.
Honestly, I like it. It's one of the most insightful front panel layouts I've seen in years, clearer than even a Nord Lead 3 even if it doesn't look as nice.
Here's the link: SH-201 Manual. On blogger, you have to do the whole (a href = "http://url")link text(/a) thing for links to work. Just replace the ( with < and ) with >
