Roland SH-201 Video on Sonic State

Almost missed this one. According to the video it uses the same analog modelling section of the VSynth. Title link takes you there.

  1. hmmm - the analog modeling on the V-synth (which is the same as the JP8000) isnt really that good... at least compared to something like the Ion...

id have to play one of these 201s to know for sure if its any good... maybe they refined the engine or added extra cpus or something to make it more analog smooth

but if its exactly the same, i would definately pass

v-synth has a bunch of other shit that makes it worthwhile (sample manipulations, cosm stuff, fx modeling, dbeams, ttpad, etc. etc. etc.) ... but if it was just the analog modeling section - that would just be a re-release of the JP8000!!

there has to be some kind of newness here - maybe i will jaunt out to the keyboard shop and chek one out

somehow i doubt it will top the ion for VA modeling - but i must experience it first hand to know for sure

  2. I'm looking forward to trying one out.
I wasn't impressed with either the Ion or the MS2000.

  4. But brand new and at this price point? What's interesting is that VAs actually do have their own character. When I heard the demos of the SH-201 it was clearly Roland sounding to me. It doesn't sound like an ION, MS2000, Virus, Novation, etc... A lot of people compare one VA to another as if they sound the same, but when you start playing with them a bit their differences really come out, just as much as analogs of before. BTW, I know that's not what you are saying Yeti, just thinking aloud.

I doubt I'd actually buy an SH-201 but I am curious as to how it will sound compared to other VAs and at that price. Now the Radias at close to 2k, seems way overpriced to me. I'm left wondering how much more it will have to offer over an MS2000 to justify the price. I'm even wondering how much more aside from looks will it have over the SH-201.

The one thing I have to give Roland credit for are price and synths with knobs for younger generations just getting into synths. My first synth was a Matrix-6 brand new from the store for $1100 in 1986 dollars. Yes it was analog and complex but zero knobs. You couldn't find an affordable knob synth like the SH-201 back then for that price. If I were the same age I was back then I wouldn't mind the SH-201 as my first synth.

  5. true dat - im still interested in playing with a 201 just to see what its about

i dunno tho - i figured we might have affordable real analog synths by now... for some reason it hasnt happened

oh well - my gear lust has been taking a back seat to other ones lately anyhow :P
