  1. including such rock heroes as:
    Bach! Debussy! Bach!

(if they showed a picture of les baxter on the cover, the rekkid would've sold even fewer copies)

  2. Well of course "Switched On Bach" made the rock charts and sold a record setting number of albums for classical music.

What's pathetic here is Baxter could be an absolutely brilliant arranger and he had Paul Beaver to play Moog for him. What you get is a generic studio drumkit, bass, guitar with the melody usually played simply on top with a Moog. That's it. Track after track of that.

Compare to Martin Denny's "Exotic Moog". (I found both in the same record bin for a couple dollars each) Denny was heavily influenced by Baxter. Supposedly "Exotic Moog" killed Denny's major label career. None the less it's a very satisfying album. Denny does what he does best, arrange Exotica. You've got interesting leads and fun arrangements.

Or take "Switched on (Hit and) Rock" done semi-anonymosuly by some then unknown dude named Tomita in 1972. Here again you get some real drums, bass, etc. but there are also many layers of Moog sounds for over the top sonic weirdness
