Todd Rundgren - Black Maria
Check out the dual Synthis. So, if I made a Matrixsynth T like the one Todd is wearing would you buy it?

Only if you include those super cool shoulder pad thingys...
ReplyDeleteDamn, I need to get me some eyebrows like that. Now I know why that Rundgren dude got all the chicks. Wait a second, I don't think he got any chicks, did he?
ReplyDeleteI don't know what the hell Powell was doing with all that EMS stuff...living a Brian Eno Roxy Music fantasy, probably. But Ralph Shuckett sure could play that Rhodes, and John Siegler, besides being one of the best bass players in the world, went on to write the theme song for Pokemon. Isn't life wierd...
ReplyDeletegotta catchem all!
ReplyDeleteThat's actually Jean-Yves (M. Frog) Labat in the video. Roger Powell wasn't fully in Utopia until the Another Live album of 1975. He did play on a track here or there before that, but he wasn't a member of the band on that tour.
ReplyDeleteI saw Todd (with the Cars, of all things) a couple of weeks ago. He still plays Black Maria, and it still kicks ass. Not as much makeup anymore, though. Not sure why...
We should all just strap on the Nikes & ride the comet into the next world.
ReplyDeleteI like too much this dual Ems setup but I would have liked to hear the sounds of Ems...
ReplyDeleteYep, makes you wonder exactly what he was doing.
ReplyDeleteWhat he was doing mainly was treating Todd's guitar.
ReplyDeleteNotice how above the Synthis are those 1U size rack units that he's tweaking the knobs on (mainly the top left one) as he watches Todd solo: Those are EMS Pitch-to-Voltage converters.
M. Frog himself talks about it during a 2-hour long interview here:

He's had a hell of a life since his Utopia days, including a stretch as a prisoner in one of Idi Amin's death camps!
BTW, that interview is on the second page of that site, the date of posting is June 1st, 2008
