cool video (the top one)! BUT, i have some criticism. it doesnt seem like he knows his moogs at all. first of all, the memorymoog has 6 and not 8 note polyphony. he seemed unsure about how many vcos the micromoog had at first. he said he never used his source before and the sound showed it. actually, he seems to play the same type of sound on each moog, making it seem like hes a lousy synthesist. of course, in the end, i really liked his playing on this though. i also like his solo work, even though i disliked The Cure.
ReplyDelete... Got to admit... I don't really care if a Memorymoog has 8 voices or 6. I doubt he cares either, since he doesn't really use them. As for the Micromoog, I doubt even Bob Moog cared how many VCOs it had.
ReplyDeleteWhat's cool about Roger O'Donnell's solo material is how he has managed to get a real organic sound. It never sounds mechanical. I got to watch him build up a track recently, and brotha', it was impressive.
he makes music like someone playing tetris. multi-level peices fitting together snugly.

ReplyDeleteMan the sound quality really blows, aliasing all over the place. Yu think they wouldn't have relied on the webcam mic.
ReplyDeleteFinally got around to checking these out in entirety myself. Pretty cool. Anyone else notie the little knob on the righ of the keys on the Voyager? Thought that was kind of funny. I have a tendancy to have little trinkets like that lying around as well. I'm guessing that's what it was and not an actual mod.
ReplyDeleteBTW, the first concert stub I saved was The Cure at Irvine Medows, Oct.12, 1985. I'm not sure if Roger joined yet, but I have seen them several times over the years so I am sure I have seen him on stage. I was also a big Psychadelic Furs fan but I did not get to see them until they reunited in 2001. I did see Love Spit Love before that though.

ReplyDeleteI got to see Roger at NY's Sam Ash for Moog's unveiling of the LP. I must admit I was there to see the other star endorser, Jordan Rudess. Roger did a quick build up of "This Is A Story" similar to the WFMU version (see his MySpace page). Although he had some technical problems, I found his demonstration to be fascinating. He used Ableton Live rather than Logic Pro to show how he would be building the tracks live. As he did this, he gave some great insights into how he built up chords using single lines and how to articulate each line a little differently. He also talked a bit about how the album was recorded and produced since the darker tones he uses present unique mix problems.
ReplyDeleteAs far as I know, nobody videotaped this event. That's too bad because his appearance there was more in-depth than the clips he posted. What I didn't remember until later that night, though, was that I had seen Roger in one of his first Cure appearances back in '87. I didn't know who the hell he was. I was just pissed that I stood in front of him and Lol was nowhere to be seen.
