  1. Cool pics,

    Where did you find these?

This is not from 1986 but from a concert (in the UK I think)way back in the autumn of 1980. I noticed this from the gear they're using.

Visible in Froese's rig is an Oberheim OB-X, a PPG 340/380 wave computer and Projekt Elektronik modular & sequencers (these latter two were I think formely used by Peter Bauman before he left the band back in 1977).

In Schmoelling's rig there's a Prophet 5 Rev 2, Polymoog and Minimoog as well as parts of a Moog modular (this modular rack was used by Froese during their concert in East-Berlin back in January 1980).

Franke's rig comprises a Prophet 5 rev 2, minimoog, Elka Rhapsody 610, possibly an Arp Odyssey mk III as well as the big custom modular synthesizer (with a variety of modules (incl. sequencers) from Moog, PE, PPG etc...plus SCI 700 programmer, Moog vocoder, drum modules etc etc...)

  2. Correction: it appears to be from their European tour back in January/February 1981 (in Germany I think).

  3. Hi !
    I am Frédéric Gerchambeau.
I am the one who has taken these photos.
And I confirm. It was at a concert in Paris, at the Olympia, march 31 1986. TD was then Froese, Franke and Haslinger.
In fact, it was one of the first concerts of TD with Haslinger, or maybe the very first one. Don't remember clearly. This concert was organized by Serge Leroy, a former member of Lightwave. And Lightwave saw unsurprisingly that concert. And they met then Haslinger. That's why Haslinger played after with Lightwave...

  4. Frederic, are you really sure you aren't mis-remembering this because I'm pretty sure TD didn't use this old gear by early 1986, at least not live.

    Very strange indeed!

I actually have some other photos that definitely appear to be from the same concert and these are dated January 1981.

here are a few links from that concert for comparison:

    Johannes Schmoelling

So how do you explain this?

    Mikael

  5. I have not to explain anything. I have seen TD in concert only twice. In 1978 for their "Cyclone Tour" and at the Olympia, in 1986, for that very special concert organized by Serge Leroy. As the light was very low, I couldn't take any good picture during that concert. So, to take after all some pictures of that concert and keep a souvenir of it, I have taken the synths, then very quiet...

  7. Hmmm...I still believe you're confusing those old photos with the ones you took at the Olympia concert in France '86, because I'm 99% certain that the photos that you posted are from a much earlier concert--i.e. from one of TD's concerts in Germany back in January/February 1981-- And as I said above, Tangerine Dream weren't using those old keyboards in concert anymore after 1983/1984 (I'm especially thinking of the Oberheim OB-X, Polymoog, PPG 340/380 wavecomputer or even the Prophet 5).

Btw, I just received from a TD fan some photos from the Olympia concert in Paris '86 and it's pretty clear that the ones you posted can't be from that concert.

  8. Was he at the Olympia on march 31 1986 ?
    And you ?
    I was.
But the aim of these photos was not polemic.
It was only to not keep them for myself.
Since 1986 I have these photos and now you tell me I was in 1981 in Germany. Where I have not seen a single concert in my all life.
    Sorry for all that.
But it's ok, I know what I have seen.
Next week I will send some photos of Tim Blake in concert in Orsay (near Paris) in 1978. And don't tell me it's in 1982 in Spain...

  9. Frederic Gerchambeau needs to stick to making up stories about imaginary synthesisers and stay away from making up stories about imaginary TD gear setups.

he's much better at talking about imaginary synthesisers.

  10. -frederic, I'm not joking with you. I'm simply telling you the truth when I say those pics are from late '80 or early '81.

But no, I wasn't attending the Olympia concert in Paris back in March 1986 but I have several photos from that concert that were published in the May 1986 issue of E&MM magazine, and from looking at those it's clear that the photos you posted aren't from that concert, but from a much earlier concert.

    Mikael

    ReplyDelete
  11. Just let me see those photos from E&MM magazine. Ok ? (my e-mail box : fredericgerchambeau@wanadoo.fr)
And let's just forget my opinion about my photos. It's just TD with big synths in the 80's.
Everybody is happy. And no more polemic.
Maybe I am wrong after all. Why not ? I am just an average human being.
I have seen Klaus Schulze several times in concert. How many times. I just don't remember.
I have seen Kraftwerk quite a lot of times in concert. How many times. I just don't remember. And I am going to see them again the 21st october in Belgium.
And I have seen also Tangerine Dream several times in concert. How many times. I just don't remember. But here are some photos I have done...

  12. Yep, remember guys, no babies are going to die because of this. I'll remove the 1986 from the title since frederic seems to be ok with this, and let's move on. I don't think frederic is out to get us. He's contributed quite a bit to this site. Just do a search for frederic. Let me know if any of them are bogus and we'll deal with them. I personally thank frederic for taking out the time to share all of this stuff with us. BTW, frederic was not the only person to think the SMS2000 was real. Some very trusted people thought it was as well.

  14. Thanks a lot, Mikael !

This story is a lesson for me.
    Should have been humblier.
The fact is that I don't remember to have seen TD on a scene in 1981.
Was the concert annoying ? Don't known. But, ok, it was in 1981 and I was there.
So I've seen TD 3 times. Once in 1978 (I still have the ticket !), once in 1986, thanks to Serge Leroy, founder of Crystal Lake, and once in 1981, but I was dreaming then.

    ReplyDelete
  15. You're welcome Frederic :)

During their European tour in early 1981 TD played at the Bataclan Palace in Paris (this was in February 1981).
Could that be the concert you attended?

Do you have any pics from the 1978 concert? if so, I'd love to see them.

    Mikael

    ReplyDelete
  16. Yes, maybe it was in the Bataclan, which is a rather small place. Frankly, I don't remember at all. But I have still these photos, and they are now a big mystery to me.
I remember well the concert of 1978, because it was after the very polemic "Cyclone" album. I really love it. But I know that most of the TD fans don't. So, I was excited about that concert. But, no, I did no photo. I remember well also the TD concert of 1986. Because it was a big piece of work for Serge Leroy of Crystal Lake to organize it. And I had a lot of contacts with Crystal Lake at that time, same thing for many synths lovers in France of that era.
So, no photo of TD in 1978, but I will send you a copy of my ticket... :-)))

  17. It's fanny to see the PPG 380/340 WAVE COMPUTER system in Edgar Froese's rig. Maybe this is the one who went to thomas dolby later.
    Sorry for the bad english!
    Cheers!
    Nick-Greece

  18. Hi Nick, the PPG340/380 from Edgar went not Thomas Dolby. Thomas' system crashed in an elevator as far as I known. The original silver case from Edgar with the 340/380 is owned by me now. Unfortunately I need to sell it because need for money. So when you're interested email me cugamonga@online.de
