ReplyDeleteThe trouble with posting Buchla examples is that you're damned either way: if it could possibly be done with another synth the comments are like "$20K for that? I could patch that up on my Acme Modular." and if it's too unusual it's "See... Buchla's are only good for bug music".

ReplyDeleteI'm not sure exactly what that means, but I think that most critiques of the 200e examples center on price. Now if the 200e could be had for less than the cost of a more or less equivalent Doepfer, would people still critique the samples the same way?
What to people want to hear in a sample, anyway? Are they dying to hear some slamming four on the floor techno? The type of person who is drawn to Buchla is probably someone who is more interested in experimental music.

I'd critique any modular company that has an aliasing digital VCO as it's only sound generation source.
Umm, the Buchla examples I posted use the 261e oscillator, which does not alias. You are probably thinking of the 259e which does have wavetables that can alias.

ReplyDeleteYou know, the Prophecy is not a bad controller. I like the variety of wheels and ribbons, and the arpeggiator is not bad, either. I do have a Buchla Thunder that I will eventually be using with the 200e, but it's in mothballs (I moved recently, so the studio is not all set up).

ReplyDeleteI asked Buchla awhile ago and they said it did have analog waveshaping, but the oscillator was still digitally generated. So I assume that the rest of the waveforms derive from a digital saw or tri wave. Wheather you can get it to alias in certain situations, I don't have one sitting in front of me to try it out.

Although I was referring to only having the 259e as a choce for the first year or so. But from what I can hear in your examples, it's not. But who knows, you could be using a Doepfer. ;-)
Yeah, but a Doepfer that had roughly equivalent functionality, if not equivalent sound, of a 200e would be wall sized, and hernia inducing. Plus, it wouldn't be nearly as blinky. :-)
