imogen heap on letterman

I almost didn't put this up as I try to keep post specifically about the synths rather than just artists using synths. You can imagine how out of control the site would get if I opened the flood gates. But... Since I've been on a bit of a looping kick lately I figure why not. I've heard of Imogen Heap before but I never made the time to listen to her music. Brian Comnes sent me a link to this video as Imogen Heap is becoming the looping artist. This video shows how she is able to create a full piece of music all by herself using loops and most importantly building them live. Pretty cool, and Letterman seemed to like it. : ) This song is really growing on me. Anyone know what synth she's playing?

  1. Of course Letterman liked it, all the talk show hosts always say "Good job" or "That was great" because it wouldn't really be a good idea to say "That was shit!" on air, not if you want musicians to keep appearing.

    :P

I mean, I don't really see Leno as a big rap listener, you know?

  2. Well of course. It was the choice of the word, "beautiful" that makes me think he genuinely liked the performance. He usually would say something like "Good job" or "That was great."

  3. she's definitely growing on me. her newest stuff is really very good.

on imogen's website there are some cool quicktime vr panoramas of her home studio where she did the last record all herself. not a lot of synth porn, really. just a G5 and a pro tools|HD system, but still it looks like a nice place to work.

looks like she's a one man band in there too! there's even a keyboard and monitor for the pro tools rig inside the vocal booth. so she can do her own vocal dubs, i assume ;)

  4. ah... yeah. If this appeals to you, you really need to check out Juana Molina. A classical guitar, a couple ddl's, a synth, no reverb on her vocals. I've seen her do things live that most studio engineers can't do in days.

  5. I love Imogen Heap. I even dig iMegaphone! I have seen this video ten zillion times; let me know if you want a higher resolution mpeg. I first herd her on Jeff Beck's cover of Rollin and Tumblin.
