Roland RF-303 Vocoder Samples via Chris Strellis

Via Chris Strellis on AH:

"I haven't played with many vocoders before but I've got simple and effective results from my Roland EF-303. Here's the vocoded section from one of my tracks in isolation: link.

I'd be interested to here what other vocoder it most sounds like. There aren't many controls on the EF-303 to alter this sound much but I think it's pretty decent enough. The EF-303 can do a fair Air's "Kelly watch the stars" at times.

BTW the song it comes from can be downloaded from here.

As a comparison, I have also used NI Vokator which is absolutely brilliant. I used it in another track of mine called Skylab.

The full track is here: link.

  1. A nice alternative to the typical boxes- it offers a lot more and it's not too expensive. What am I saying? This is rubbish- no one should get one of these boxes until I have 10! A fun listen. Thanks Mr. Strellis for the post.

  2. ya welcome ;)

Seriously thought the EF-303 is an underated box and can function as a MIDI step sequencer like the ARP Sequencer.

  3. Thanks Chris. Alright, now I really want one. I new I should have bought one when they were out. The Roland MC-09 Phrase Lab is another fun little box. Completely different, but one easily passed on as a groove box. It's intersting that some of these boxes are finally losing the groove stigma they once had and we finally seeing them for what they are - little boxes that perform a certain function. When looking at gear, always take a away all the hype, positive or negative, and see it for what it is, otherwise you just might miss something.
