So, I've noticed the majority of Anonymous Comments have turned into garbage since this post. Hmm.... I wonder why. I've noticed a few people complaining about them. So, I ask you the readers what do you think? Here are the options:
1. Disable Anonymous Comments altogether.
2. Allow Anonymous Comments but delete all negative Anonymous Comments.
3. Leave things as is

ReplyDeleteBy blocking anonymous posts, you will likely find more posts from fake accounts, and it's back to square one.
Rule #1: don't feed the trolls. Anything you do to 'respond' to the anonymous posts (again, you can't stop dumb posts -- this IS the Internet after all!) just gives them more reason to post.
The best thing to do is just be above it and enjoy all the press, both good and bad.
If you're really making a difference, lots of people will hate you. It's the sure sign you've 'made it' :)
Consider stupid Anon posts your 'merit badges'.
Either way the lame-@$$ word verification doesn't work in Firefox so it doesn't really matter to me. I personally don't allow any comments on my blog thanks to spammers. Since you don't host your own blog maybe it's not a problem for you.

ReplyDeleteI don't have an account (I use the 'other' feature), but I'll gladly register to engage in the (sometimes) fruitful discussions that take place in these comments.
Dr. F: I can see someone having a few accounts (one for being civil, one for trolling, etc), but at least the troll account will be linkable to other lame comments and there will be some lame entity to point fingers at when the shit hits the fan as in the KL post. I can't imagine anyone creating a new account every time they want to be a dickwad...
I think leave censorship out... We should all respect each other. Any anonymous post that gets personal just shows their immaturity I guess..
ReplyDeleteFirst, with regard to the original posting, while it is true, that the Moog Foundation has not yet shown itself to be a master at fundraising, the important thing is whether they deliver on the scholarships they state will be announced next summer. Whatever the (perceived) motives of those running the foundation, the important thing is whether they create a lasting legacy beyond Bob Moog's commercial enterprises. Perhaps they will fail to do so, perhaps they will achieve their goals in a very limited manner. Either way what possible good is there in attacking the foundation before it has had a chance to prove itself? (By the way, according to the Wikipedia entry for the foundation, the fundraising started Aug 21, 2006. Only 3 months ago.)
ReplyDeleteSecond, this is your blog. If you find something inappropriate you have the right to delete it. If you support the foundation and its goals, then I see no issue with you removing unsubstantiated claims that attack in the way that was done. The first comment that was made and the follow-up were unnecessarily unkind. I agree with you 'wiping' the post and letting it start over. Unfortunately some were offended and saw this as censorship. I find it hard to believe that those whose comments were deleted were close enough to the situation to have made they comments they did. Also, I don't recall you ever giving a mission statement saying this was a forum for one and all to say whatever they please. On the contrary you have said you created the blog for your own interests. I do not believe providing an *unlimited* forum for discussion was one of your goals.
Thirdly, I agree with the good Doktor. It is easy to create bogus accounts. I personally don't see the anonymous noise as a big problem. Half the time I don't even look at the comments - I imagine many others do the same. So leave it alone - it aint broke (yet!).

Well it sucks when the anonymous comments are rude and disrespectful, but whats the difference when you can log in with a fake account and do the same thing? It may deter people from posting since they would have to put effort into registering. Comments will probably decrease.
ReplyDeleteYou know anonymous comments help people do be more honest, and sometimes I like reading this stuff, as long as its within taste. Just leave the anonymous comments and delete the ones you don't like.

ReplyDeleteAnonymous comments are fun. It's not like you HAVE to read them. I know there is at least one company who's representatives are concenred about anonymous comments. But as stated, it doesn't stop someone from registering fake accounts to post them anyways.

Anonymous posts are the domain of cowards and weaklings. I enjoy your blog - as far as I'm concerned, you provide a useful service. Why should anyone in those circumstances need to continually police comments or put up with slander? If you have something worth saying, it should be worth creating an account for.

ReplyDeleteThat is true. And by doing a quick Google search of his supposed last name turns up a cached page that is undeniably linked to this blog. But besides for that slip up, he would still be completely anonymous. It reaffirms my and other's point that requiring registration doesn't mean your real identity is there for everyone to view. The only real solution is to ban comments all together. Or presecreen everything. Both making quite a boring site.
I hate to admit it, but I agree with the last spate of puckish anonymous postings. I concur with his opinion that the Vermona & MicroWave do indeed suck.

ReplyDeleteI am starting to feel swayed as well after reading the recent few anon posts. It's ridiculous. Honestly, all the talks about Matrixsynth need to earn respect and all... he has my respect... and just a thought... if you want Matrixsynth to respect you, you gotta repect his site too. It's a fair game... With these anon posting disrespectfully, it's no wonder they get non, even from people who comes here...

Well, he posted that one-word comment on the MOTM too. And even if they do suck, it would be nice if he would say something about what in particular about them sucks.

ReplyDeleteit's not that a post is anonymous or not. All this time I was posting anonymously and (I think)never had a problem.
It's the quality of people that count.
O.K., it's easier to say whatever you want, without care if you'll annoying someone so that's why people post that way.
Many posts on the subject that came up these days were silly -to say the least and misleading.
I just wanted to say that, a little bit of thought and logic required for everyone (I don't left my self out)when posting opinions in public.

ReplyDeleteBut the "Other" field is handy, since I don't have a blogger account. Either that, or turn off comments altogether. Some of these anonymous guys (or is it just one guy over and over?) are a bit over the top. For the SIGHUP blog, I've disabled the comments system and opted for a forum instead. It's easier to register for the forum, gets rid of anonymous posters, and makes it much easier to manage the spam.

An anonymous comment is most likely to be viewed with some salt.

I don't see how most screennames are any different than anon comments except they registered.

Ok, Matrix has his detractors and offended people to the point they can't leave him be.
So why not make another blog and call it matrixsynth sucks or something.
Then whomever that runs the blog can copy just the non-donated content and no text from matrix himself. Links provided to the original matrixsynth post.
They can include Chris at Audio Damage too, because he has no feelings any how.

No jerks here and a forum where anything can be said.

Thanks everyone. I put this up to see what you all think. I'm going to disable them for now. The problem with anonymous comments is you can't tell if it's from the same poster or not. Anon (not anonymous) above said it perfectly. This is a personal blog, not a forum. I put stuff up I find interesting and you can comment if you like. Note it is a personal blog, not some business and not really a forum. BTW, I noticed that all the forums I go to like, the-gas-station, Harmony Central, VSE and most lists, AH, have moderators. I can delete the annoying anonymous comments, but it would be a bit of work. I've been thinking about turning them off and was curious what others thought. As expected there are people on both sides of the fence and I respect that. Unfortunately I can't do both.

And as for people signing up and trolling, I will delete the trolls, although I'm not sure what to do about synthbaron. ; ) His trolling falls under a completely different category. You are special synthbaron.
And BTW, this is blog really isn't that important. I never expected it to even get that big. It really is just a place where I post stuff I come across. Think of it as my favorites list. It's not meant to be some major publication. Think of it as tapas bar or appetizers for the synth community. If you enjoy it keep coming back, but if you don't go already. The funniest things about the negative Anonymous comments and Kevin actually, is they keep coming back.
