Frederic sent this one in a while back and I passed on putting it up then. It was a busy day... Here it is on a hopefully slow weekend. Thanks frederic!

man i was tired of teh JP8k sound when it came out like 10 years ago
ReplyDeleteno sir, i dont like it
But its got great synthesesis!
ReplyDeleteI hate when companies like roland and korg reuse names from their older better synths like sh, juno,ms etc,,,,
ReplyDeleteI hate it when companies like Roland and Korg re-use terms like Oscillator and ADSR.
ReplyDeleteThey should call them new names, like 'Orange Crumbler' and 'WavyWave'.
demoing with a hip-hop version of duran duran's "save a prayer" kinda made me smile. flat, booring sounds, but a lot of features for the price.
ReplyDeleteActually it's a pretty good synth. Even though the architecture is similar, the sound quality is more solid & cuts through a mix a lot better than the JP-8000.
ReplyDeleteI thought the review was well written Peter. I think it probably deserves a Key Buy considering it's price and ease of use (no hidden menus), however sonically I thought it was a little lacking the few times I've played with it at the local GC. I think I'd need to sit down with it alone for an extended period of time before I could make a proper call, but my first impression wasn't as strong as the JP8000. I liked the JP8000 the first time I played it, so much so I picked one up. They sound different to me. The SH-201 sounds a bit edgier to me - more aggressive. The JP8000 more refined. The JP8000 also has cross mod. As for the review, I was surprised you didn't mention the ION! That would be a great alternative and personally I'd probably go with the ION, but... It's all personal taste. Also it's worth noting I wasn't that crazy about the ION's sound when I first played it but it grew on me. As for the SH-101 comparison, I don't see it. I know that's what they are trying to market, but a JX-3P with knobs and sliders? That I see, both in look and sound. Regardless, great review Peter. I had that sense of wow that's Peter! when I saw it well before this post.
