Details:
-Not just 4 monosynths! You can chain them together as shown in the pics and get two dual-OSC, dual-ENV synths (mod VCA and VCF)
-Each synth 'channel' can be assigned to the same, or separate midi channels (so you could have suboscs, or detunes for fat hoover sounds, etc)
-Duo mode, in which incoming notes alternate between synth pairs 1&2 and 3&4
-Poly mode, in which incoming notes alternate between individual synth channels 1-> 2-> 3-> 4-> 1-> ...
-Awesome for live tweaking and immediacy in the studio
-Can be used as a filterbank to make your other gear sound better ;)
-An excellent 'seed' for a modular system - it would serve as four OSC modules or six -LP Filter modules

Hmmm... pretty tasty filter.
ReplyDeleteyep. pretty much sucks. also, every time I look at Vermona products, the chrome reminds me of being on an 80's set of 'Fame' or soemething. They should sell legwarmers.

I'm not sure about the look of Vermona stuff too, but someware on the net I heard a demo of the Performer, it might have been on soundonsound, but after that I've alway wanted one evern with its it 80's chrome knobs.
ReplyDeletei read that SoS review. Sounded like if the synth had a modicum of additional features it'd be great.
ReplyDeleteI listened to it too. Kinda okay. But not good enough to start buying equipment that looks like 70's disco.
I've had one for a couple of years and I love it. It's not the most versatile instrument i've owned but it's very flexible and has good-sounding oscillators and filters. I get sounds on this box I can't get from any of my other stuff, even the MEK or OBXa. And apart from occasional confusion stemming from the near-identical rows of knobs, I actually like the way it looks. I only wish it had PWM and separate audio outs for each synth channel.
ReplyDeleteDo you think you could mod one of these to add some of the features that are missing, If you could bear to drill into the case. maybe a break out box.
ReplyDeleteIt would be great to post some demos and see if it would change anyones mind.

Sorry for the double posting
ReplyDeleteA breakout box for the Perfourmer could be great... I'd love to see something along the lines of a Moog
ReplyDeleteVX-352 for the Perfourmer!
To put it in context, the sample linked from here is just a demonstration of the filter. So making conclusions like "sucks" is ignorant.
ReplyDeleteHere's the Indigo sample that is intended to be compared to the one of the Perfourmer linked above. (Both samples are single OSC, no effects, single LPF.)

Form your own conclusion based on a comparison of the samples.
Considering that you can pull the individual OSC signals directly, and/or use the each channel as an independent LPF, its a very handy box.
Re limitations, I'd say this is more at home either alongside a modular setup (and therefore not standalone). In fact, I think it would be the ultimate starting point for one.
That said, where the Perfourmer really shines in in the making of the dual-OSC setup by linking channels as pictured. Also, its pretty stellar when you have an arpeggiation going and all four channels are taking turns playing notes. In that situation, combined with the all-available knobs, its beats the hell out of VAs.
Re it's looks, the Vermona gear is ultra-high-quality. Its a damn tank, and the chrome knobs lend a weighty feel that most gear can't live up to. How it looks 80's, I have no idea; silver, chrome, and blue LEDs = bliss.
Re mods, I know XXXXX did some tweaks on YYYYY's for adjusting sensitivity and range selection for the tuning. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if you could break it up into individual units (i.e., separate the ENVs and LFOs) but I'm not too knowledgeable about the circuits or what that would take.
My favorite part of the photos is the low-budget rack made from 2x4's. <g>
Oops. That Virus Indigo sample is at: http://lumin.us/msr/forsale/perfourmer/20060730_indy_acid.mp3
