This is going to be hypocritical sounding in the extreme, considering my recent ass-tastophe of a Wretch S-1000 video demo, but surely there must be a better way to sell this $20,000 pile of wonderment than this 30-second fartfest.
ReplyDeleteAny better, longer, shinier vids?
Seriously. If I close my eyes, it could very well be my first circuit bent "animal train". If you're doing a video, at least pick someone who knows how to use the damn thing.
ReplyDeletedude doing the system demo designed the instrument with Don. I would say if ANYONE knows how to use the 200e it would be him. even more so then Buchla himself.
ReplyDeletein order to "get" what a buchla is all about you need to play one.. I've said it before but its the way one interacts with the instrument vs the sound one chooses to make with it.
Don Buchla is an expert of Man-Machine interface and it is his control panel layouts and machine languages which sets his instruments apart from other similar hardware or software.
As much as I *love* the Buchla 200e, I'm gonna have to suggest that it's difficult making stable sensile patches at a show like that.
ReplyDeletePeople's greasy fingers twiddling and plugging away.
But, it is good to know that the Buchla 200e can do cheezy circuit bending noises. It's demonstrable range continues to expand!
I mean, I didn't hear any Banjos in that! WTF!
Then again, I did order Todd Barton's buchla CD and enjoy it, so WTF do I know?
Well, Anonymous... that being the case, this video was all the more disappointing.
ReplyDeleteI'm still waiting to hear a Buchla 200e that does not sound like either a DX7 or just some random garbage like a circuit bent toy. Charles Cohen knows how to rock the Buchla, I wonder what he could do with it.
ReplyDeleteIt is curious that none of these new Buchla machines seem to have landed in the hands of artists who are interested in making melodic/tonal music with it and sharing the results on the web. Of course, that's a lot of bother to go to if you don't have anything to prove... and I suspect that if you own a Buchla 200e, you don't have anything you need to prove. So, prove me wrong already!
ReplyDeleteCheck this out. 100% Buchla 200e doing something a bit more traditional.
ReplyDeleteOoo, WW2 fighter planes.
ReplyDeleteI think that deep beneath the mass of knobbie, wirey goodness lies a $10 Ken Stone V8 simulator board.
ReplyDeleteI have posted most of these before, but I have some Buchla 200e sketches here:

I think the person likely to be obsessed with the 200e is likely one who likes relatively "outside" music. And while these examples are not as abstract as a lot of the things I do, they're still not too normal. And yes, I suppose that some of the sound could be considered banjo-y.
As far as finding "a better way to sell this $20,000 pile of wonderment", given the current backlog filling orders, I'm not sure that's currently a huge concern.
Wow! Not only can this extremely pricey, multi-coloured 'synth' sound like a banjo - it can also sound like... crap
ReplyDeleteEnvious people.
ReplyDeleteI want the Trans Am Keyboard for sure.
