  1. I found 4 I could tolerate listening to at once.

    And someone didn't scrub ID3 tags. :-/

  5. its a shame that its all alphabetical most people will listen to the first 10 and give up

  6. RE: alphabetical order
Yeah, I named my entry with a letter late in the alphabet, which was probably a mistake.

(and I admit to not having the foresight to nuke the ID3 tags. D'Oh)

  7. Haha I had mine in... but should have named my with numbers like 001 and 002 then mine would be on first two tracks. Darn...

  8. Not to mention some are in .wav. Hey not fair!

  9. the problem is that electronic music equipment is so cheap that anyone can afford it. i mean you can buy a decent modular even for around $2000. there are so many 'synth enthusiasts' that really just make noises that there is very little good music out there. alas.

remember, back in the day a minimoog was $3000 and a modular was $25,000 and a decent poly was $5000. it was not easy to afford these instruments and those that could were pretty serious about music. of course there was crap being put out back then too. but no where near as much as now.

  14. > Which 4 could you tolerate?

Well, anything with a drum track, was fucking techno, sounded like samples were used, clipping distortion, just basically one sound for the entire length, or any kind of "normal" musical structure was automatically disqualified IMHO.

  15. > remember, back in the day a minimoog was $3000 and a modular was

All I could find was a $1495 original list price for 1970, not sure that is correct. But, using an inflation calculator:

What cost $1495 in 1970 would cost $7531.68 in 2005.

I almost thought Ezra Buchla entered a few pieces in this contest...

  17. When voting, please remember that the competition is supposed to be music composed with randomly created sounds. If an entry has a perceived pitch, or constant or repeating rhythm, it's not aleatoric at heart.

Also keep in mind the theme. Do the entries that you listen to convey War and Peace when you hear it?

  18. The rules this year are a little broader:
Aleatoric "bug" music is traditionally non-keyboard type music and often controlled completely by chance, this year however we're stretching the rules to include more guidance by human hands, however if the piece you're listening appears to be completely scripted, sounding like traditional music heard any old where, well then, it's not exactly "bug music " then is it? Give extra points for um, "bug factor " or "bugginess!" (You'll have to decide for yourself just what that means exactly :)

Also I disagree that aleatoric has to mean unpitched. To me, aleatoric just means that there are chance-based decisions involved. Would you agree that picking pitches at random from a fixed scale of notes is, at heart, aleatoric?

  19. There's far too many for me to listen and give an honest vote.

The people in charge of the contest should have narrowed it down to the top ten highest quality tracks.

It's impossible to get an accurate vote like this. I'll bet poeple wo entered will vote their track the highest and everybody else's the lowest as many times as they can change their IP address.

  20. Perceived pitch I meant as in a more traditional style of music. If the entry sounds like standard techno (or other relatively common genre), then it doesn't follow the idea of the contest.

Even though the contest is expanded to allow more human interaction, it is still an aleatoric contest, and should be judged as such.

    Here's the quote again:

however we're stretching the rules to include more guidance by human hands, however if the piece you're listening appears to be completely scripted, sounding like traditional music heard any old where, well then, it's not exactly "bug music " then is it?

  21. I agree that the number of entries will make it difficult. Most people will probably not listen to all of the entries. I know I didn't! What I did do was skip the ones that didn't sound aleatoric to me (and that was the majority of them).

  22. I too made the mistake of naming my song with a letter towards the end of the alphabet.
I also started with a sequenced piece that gave way to drones and s&h loops. If someone just listens to the first 20 seconds, the song will appear to be completely scripted.
Im spite of this, I have absolutely no complaints about the contest. It was a fun thought exercise that got me to produce a new track in a way that I don't normally work.
I didn't find voting to be that difficult either. You can eliminate over half of the songs without listening to them by reading their descriptions (or lack thereof). Very few of the songs adhere perfectly to all of the criteria, so it was just a matter of listening to the ones that at least tried and picking the ones that I thought sounded the best.

  23. Hello.

I've entered a contest for modular synthesis. The prize is a Zeroscillator. It will help me make
all sorts of new music and sounds. The track uses my MOTM modular.

    My track is called "SOUNDRISE"

    The site is:

Please take a moment to vote for me.

    Thanks,

    David Scott Stone

  24. I don't even dare to plug my entries here coz I entered for fun (though I really want the ZEROSCILLATOR LOL)... I've listened to all of them and there's some good ones and plugging here will only make a fool of myself!

In any case, let's just remember to have fun amidst the competition. :D
