Yamaha CS40M with MOOG Filters

Title link takes you to shots pulled via this auction.

Update: samples via the seller in the comments: one, two, mirrored here.

Details:
"This was once a Yamaha CS-40M, a rare and exceedingly PHAT 3-voice polysynth used by the likes of Juan Atkins, Vangelis and Stevie Wonder...(for more info, see [link])

BUT THEN!...

Quite a skilled engineer/ geek/ synth nerd got his hands on it, and modded/ retroffited it out so that:

1. The filters (high pass, low pass, band pass) have all been replaced with original analogue MOOG filters - most likely from a Moog Rogue or Moog Source, but you'll have to open it up to verify! Suffice to say that it's...well, 'phatter' than your momma. Exteremely creamy, grunty. I guess that's because its....a Moog! I invite you to take a listen...

2. There are an additional 2 banks of sound/memory locations, accessible via the front panel using 2 small switches. These have already been programmed with some crazy-ass synth bass/acid/pad sound. Gorgeous."

  1. 3 voice? Thats odd - mine is only duophonic...

Hmm. Isnt it also odd that it has been modified with a multi mode (!!!) filter from a rouge or a prodigy without a single scratch or change to the panel and its layout?
Also - wouldnt this make the cs40, or indeed any yamaha cs-synth extremely thin sounding rather than fat? The reason the yamaha cs-synths sound fat in the first place (if you can say that they do at all) is because the fundamental of every note played is bypassed around the filter, thus keeping some of the original raw wave form in the sound also after it has been filtered. Of course they could have made a similar design here, but i dont see that mentioned anywhere...

Maybe im just an old cynic - but this smells fishy.

  3. "I invite you to take a listen..."

okay... where are the demos? Thanks for the invitation, dood.

  4. Regarding the first post. The poster understands what's happening but not how the "fundemental of every note is bypassed" part is done. What happens is simply the VCO's sine wave is routed around the filter. So if the filter were to be replaced actually the effect shouldn't change. I've not verified if the CS-40m or every CS does this, but certainly the 50-60-80s do.

Also since the original is a 12db filter (BP 6db) that won't self oscillate I wouldn't be surprised if a survey would find the 24db moog "fatter".

But I agree by BS detector when going when I read the 3 voice comment and the HP and BP part.

Though I guess the seller might also be skirting around mentioning that since the Moog isn't a multimode maybe the mod is real and the HP and BP are just moog LP or not connected

Without audio it could even be a placebo effect the seller is passing on from when they got it. You know, like you tell someone it's special and fat and they might believe you.

  5. i played a 20m last weekend.. had it in for repair with a minimoog, proone and maxikorg... was kind of cool to compare them all.

  6. The third vco is an lfo that goes in audio range, much like the minimoog. But its after the filter and sine wave only. I' writing this from memory, as i had a cs20m. Both are very similar and share the same user manual. I remember reading that the cs40m had a duophonic mode. The three voices he refers to are really three oscillators.
these synths are great but are more natural sounding and woody than the average monosynth, for better and for worse.

  7. The CS40M is a strictly duophonic synth, i play one in my band all the time. And yes it has a pretty "woody sound". It is a nice synthesizer but i guess the Moogs has a lot more powerful and raw sound to them, The Cs40M is a bit different compared to a lot of other synths out there

As for the "3 voice" comment - shyza, you are quite right. Definately only 2-voice. My bad!

    cheers

  10. Just to clarify - yes, multiple OSCIALLATOR SOURCES but duophonic! Check the auction - mp3 samples (pretty random ones) uploaded now.
