i have almost the exact same thing, in the same brutal color scheme, except mine sports one or two more knobs and the name 'SUPERBASS 4.4'
ReplyDeleteMAM and Next! and TerraTec are all the same units inside. I don't know what company bought what company though. Other TB clones in the rack form were:

Deep Bass Nine

Doepfer MS-404

I know I'm forgetting one or two. Of course Wikipedia has a little info too:

Some DIY options include

This is a DIY version I've never heard of before today!

The "Freebase", very big with modders due to it's cheapness. Doesn't sound much like "the real deal" though (actually, I qualify that, the one I used didn't sound like the real deal)

The ML303 is another DIY machine

Suppose we can add the devilfish to this list, it's kind of like a 303 :P

And, let us not forsake the x0xb0x
http://www.ladyada.net/make/x0xb0x/
The ML 303 was a project to "faithfully rebuild" the 303 with original spare parts as far as electronics went. Since some of the original parts are no longer around, ladyada's x0xb0x is the nearest one at present. check out www.acidlab.de for another "near 303" box (as stated, not intended as a clone), and lets not forget the future-retro 777, I use it all the time :-) It's built-in sequencer alone is worth the money.
ReplyDeleteThe FAT FB-383 is the same thing as the Spacebass. It just has a louder paint job.

Doesn't sound bad either.
The FB-383 is the Freebass. and yeah it definitely sounds different from the real thing, but it's a nice sound and certainly analog (and cheap. And to say the paint job is louder is almost an understatement ;-)
ReplyDeleteif i recall correctly, there was roughly a shitload and a half of 303 clones. thats ok, lots of people like them things, but lots of people REALLY like minis, obies and prophets too, wtf??

ReplyDeleteOne of the more interesting 303 rack clones is the Braintec Transistorbass. Two oscillators, lfo's, quite extensive midi modulation capabilities, ADR envelope, cv/gate out, sync, autoglide. It has 128 "programs" which are actually different modulation combinations, accessible by simply adding a program change. These can affect both filter and osc2 (with the amount controllable by knobs on the front). Result: you can make anything from a most convincing 303 to really powerful 2-osc basses to extreme, weird noises. Excellent sound and really satisfying to play with. MAM took it, removed one oscillator and most of the midi and lfo stuff - and voila: the MB33.
ReplyDeleteMam didnt actually bought the design from braintec, the braintec transistorbass are earlyer projects from the same guy who later started MAM togheter with one other person. and yes he did use the design from the transistorbass to later make the MB synths with mam
