Roland Jupiter-8a

This one in via Rod. Title link takes you to a 17M super sized strip of several shots via this auction. The link goes to the directory (pun intended) hosting the file, so you don't lock up your browser by clicking on the title link. The pun? The name of the directory. The starting bid on this one is $5k with a Buy It Now at $6500 and you'll be hard pressed to find one in this condition. It's a long shot.

Details:
"History: I bought this synth from a Russian ballet dancer who bought the synth in Japan in the 80's. He moved to Los Angeles in the early 90's and brought the synth with him. In the early 90's he had JL at Musictek in LA convert it to US power and install an Encore Electronics MIDI kit in it. When he decided to move back to Russia in 1996, I bought it from him and have owned it ever since. It has been used on pretty much every song I've ever done and has never needed repair or tuning the entire time I've owned it. I would have to say that out of my entire collection of synths, this one synth has been the most reliable, and sounds the prettiest of them all. I've owned 4 Jupiter-8's over the years, and this is my last and best one. You'd be hard pressed to find one in better condition at any price.

Version: This is actually a Roland Jupiter-8a, the later, more desirable model with a more reliable 14-bit processor for improved tuning. By the time this version was produced, all of the updates and bugs were addressed, the tuning was very stable, and the LED screen was brighter with no flicker. It has the DCB port as standard but the Encore MIDI kit installation disabled the DCB functionality.

Condition: Based on 15 years of owning literally dozens of vintage synths, I would rate it a 9.9/10. It is in near mint electronic and cosmetic condition. I know the word mint is overused on eBay, but take a look at the photos and judge for yourself. As you can see, the cosmetic condition of this synth is pristine. There is no wear whatsoever on the graphics, knobs, silver switches, or lettering. The colored orange paint reflects like a mirror and the Jupiter-8 logo is clean and clear. There is no sun damage and all of the parts retain their original coloring, including the white buttons and switches. The stainless steel end panels are in pristine condition. The stainless screws on the sides show no pitting or warping from screwdriver bits as found on most JP-8's. Most Roland synths from this era have pitted screws and the paint is worn off. Not on this synth. The painted screws have retained their glistening finish and look as new. The red LED screen is bright and clear, and the plastic lens has only extremely light scratches from dusting it...but they would not show up in the photos. A little plastic polish and the lens will shine as new. The vinyl-clad exterior is in pristine condition, and the matte finish is not rubbed as most are. The only obvious cosmetic issue on the synth is some minor scratches on the underbelly of the synth from being on an A-Frame stand in my non-smoking studio. There is some dust on the felt inside the air vents at the top of the synth which appeared to be a painstaking task to clean, so I'm leaving it up to the new owner to take care of this (you can see that I started to clean out the dust inside the two slots on the far right). There is one small mark in the vinyl clad metal on the back of the synth above the XLR jacks on the back of the synth. It's less than 1/8" long and nearly impossible to capture in a photo (but I tried). The keys are highly reflective with only the occasional mark here and there. The internal components are all present and accounted for, and the internals are clean and free of rust and debris. The synth is complete in every way, and even includes the small red plastic DCB plug on the back of the synth. This is the mintest example of a Jupiter-8 that I have ever owned or seen for sale anywhere on the net, eBay, or otherwise over the past 15 years of collecting synths. If you're picky about the condition of your gear, and you want the very best synth ever made, this is the synth for you. I realize I'm asking a lot for this synth and it may not be the synth for your price range. If so, please don't send me threatening e-mails. If you can find another in this shape at any price, then buy it at any price. It would be worth it. I'm the type of person that will pay additional $ for something that is the best of its kind, with no rust, and no issues. And this is the best example I have seen of a Jupiter-8 anywhere, at any price.

Functionality: Everything functions perfectly. It tunes up literally on start up, and never drifts. It's the most ultrastable synth with VCO's that I've owned! All sliders have that high-quality feel that the Jupiter-8 synths were famous for. All of the knobs and buttons function perfectly, with no scratchy pots. I have never had to clean the sliders or pots, and they all work as new. All keys trigger perfectly with no double-triggering. All inputs and outputs, MIDI, velocity (from MIDI), aftertouch (from MIDI), modulation, pitchbend, keys, buttons, and pitchbender - everything works perfectly. There is nothing functionally wrong with this synth. The Encore MIDI kit provides MIDI in and out (for exporting sysex data) and is considered to be the best MIDI kit available for the JP-8. It also doubles the memory of the Jupiter-8. For more info on everything that the Encore MIDI kit can do, please check out the Encore site at encoreelectronics.com"

  1. It's a 14 bit DAC, not processor.
The processor is still 8 bits.

  7. Thanks to his 17mb picture on the main auction page he's going to cripple anyone on dialup, any bidder from overseas, and make manual sniping impossible. You're supposed to craft your auctions so they get people to bid, not hinder them from bidding. Of course his starting price might be the biggest hindrance.

  8. Answers to a few comments from the seller:

    1) People who have the kind of money it takes to buy this synth won't be on dial-up. There are also lots of sniping programs out there as well. Usually the complaint is there are not enough photos...or they're intentionally blurry. At any rate, I reduced the size of the image.

    2) I'm selling it because I'm too busy to work on music anymore and have ZERO desire to continue maintaining 2 dozen vintage synths, reverbs, and other equipment. The other reason is the nearest tech to me is 2 hours away. Many of the older techs are dying off. The only guy who can fix my 224 reverb if it breaks just had a heart attack. There's only one guy who can fix my Voyetra if it dies and he's not trustworthy. And the last time I shipped vintage gear off to get it fixed, the techs used smaller boxes when they shipped it back, permanently damaging my mint gear.

    3) A JP-8 sold for over $4000 a few weeks back and it was nowhere near this nice. The last JP-8 I sold was for $3500, in 2004. It wasn't as nice as this one, but close. It may be a long shot, but for the right person, money is no object.

  9. Well, if you find a sucker to fall for that, more power to you I say. Have a good one.

  10. Eh, some people are willing to pay for mint condition vintage... look at the market for old guitars. I think it's legitimate at that price for a collector not a working musician.

  11. Have one exactly the same. Can't imagine getting 5K for it,perfect condition or not.Curious to see if he makes the sale..

    ReplyDelete
  12. I don't know if he'll get it, but if he does, that'll be the new rate for mint Jupiter 8's.

  13. realistic price at best is $4500

  14. buy a Roland Mks80+mpg80.

More functions and only 2000 $

  15. the other one posted on here last week or so sold for 2600 uk pounds.. 5200 us dollars and it was in mint condition too.. way too hight if you ask me.. i love the looks of this synth but it just doesn't have 6k worth of sound and features.

One just sold locally, again in mint condition, for 3k canadian dollars.. that's more realistic.

There's a speck of dust on this synth next to the mod wheel... shocking! hehehe.

  16. that guy always puts his stuff up for top top dollar. but i wonder what he paid for the things he sells. and i wonder if hes ever complained about other peoples high prices.

there seems to be a lot of hypocrisy among people in this community, criticizing high prices but then doing the same when its their turn to sell.

most people here are naturally jealous, evil creatures. this is their normal MO:

"since i cant afford to pay 5k for this jp8, im going to try to ruin this guys chances of finding a 'sucker' (ie someone with a real job and more money than my stupid broke ass) so you all should know his price is a major ripoff. there are much better deals to be had. so spend your money elsewhere!"

    and then....

"PS. until i sell mine, at which point the price is fair." ;) ;) ;)

if you ever wonder why so many people bitch about prices on the net, its pretty obvious if you think about it...

those who have a real job and real money are busy WORKING, not gabbin on a net board showing the world that they havent got the means to get what they want. its sad when you think about it. their parents should up their allowance so they can afford to buy vintage analogs instead of the software ever other bum is using cracks of.

    :)

  17. PS this will never, ever sell for this guys asking price! ;)

  18. the bad part is the death of all creative use of vintage analogues. whoever pays that much is doing it for collectible value. why would anyone looking seriously at a synth buy this over a less expensive andromeda, omega 8, PEK or whatever modern boutique poly? I know I have a brain.

that shit's gonna sit in some chap's (a)trophy room (hehehe, cool pun) collecting dust til eternity, for real.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I sure do love analog, but most of my time in the last month has been spent playing layering the Access TI, the Kawai K5000, and an Echo Park pedal.

I'd rather buy new analog than old analog these days, because of the repair issues, as the anon post says.

  20. what makes this guys gear worth so much more than everyone elses? an lm1 for 5500? a source for 1800? a cr78 programmer for 1000???? im sorry but this looks like the biggest ripoff ever. ive seen plenty of stuff not sell on ebay, and i dont see how this one did. thats just insane, and hes got serious balls to put one of these things up for that price.

    ReplyDelete
  21. there was a comment that said something to the effect of, i wonder what he bought this stuff for, and did he complain about the price?

Well, Rod is pretty known for being a let's just say, not so nice of a person. He was always the first to complain about gear you were selling being too high. And a week later flip it for 2x the amount (read this on his own website about 303s)
I was going to get something from him but decided not to, and i got random emails for weeks with the worst profanity i've ever received in an emil.
He'll be back, he'll sell of all of his stuff, then slowly hoard more...then sell it again

    ReplyDelete
  22. Well.. personally, I got a jupiter 8 that is in similar condition, tho mine is "earlier" version and does not have DCB nor MIDI retro. I paid close to $4K (after you factor in the synth + repairs). I couldn't fathom selling it for anything less than $5K - simply because that's how much it would take for me to part with it. Not because I'm trying to rip someone off but because I just can't imagine selling it for anything less and being psychologically intact thereafter. That's how much I love that darn thing. No $1000 won't make me happy... but it's a mental "breaking point". My justification to me would be: I SOLD $5000 SYNTH... Heck, now I'm even more tempted with this one being on the block at the price it is. Anyway, Jupiter 8 is a special machine and I must say that it's by far one of the few synths that REALLY DOES WORTH MORE WHEN IT LOOKS THIS GOOD.

(Mine has snow-wite felt padding under keys and dust cover foam looks nearly dust-free. The sliders are as smooth as baby's behind and no static anywhere.
    tempting... very tempting...

    ReplyDelete
  23. I don't know who the anonymous poster was above who said I am "known" for being "not so nice of a person". That's a pretty amazing statement! Care to back it up with some solid proof instead of a random anonymous post in this forum?

I have never used profanity in an e-mail to anyone, or ever complained about the price of any gear that others were selling. Why would I care? I've paid top dollar for items that I wanted to buy. If it was too high, I simply didn't buy it. Can you show me a complaint on my Web site about gear prices? This anonymous poster is obviously someone who is jealous that I own some nice gear...perhaps because they e-mailed me asking me to sell them something for cheap and I refused to do so. Those who know me personally will tell you that I do not swear, so why would I start swearing in e-mails? Please post the e-mail here for all to see.

These are the exact kind of people that make me glad to be selling all of my gear and out of this business altogether. The false accuser is ever ready to spew his hatred and lies and jealousy. I feel sorry for you Mr. Anonymous. And what's sad is that I think I know who you are...and that you profess to know the same Christ that I do.

  24. I don't like this sniping business one bit! I have noticed it directed at everyone who lists an ebay item. I have noticed it directed at Matrix (who provides a super blog and is VERY tolerant) I have noticed it directed at quite a few people just making art and trying to share a little only to get crucified. that's altogether pretty rotten and has been leaving a really bad taste in my mouth for a while now.
The abuse (as I see it) has not been endemic or localized to this blog either. It used to happen on AH and happens pretty frequently at Music Thing too. tons of negativity and bad sentiments. hope you all have a great weekend---we all love these machines and there's no reaason to make unqualified and malicious accusations. period.
damn, i mean personal attacks and libel----slander? why?
can someone explain how they are debunking, helping, or otherwise being a benefit to our community by doing this?

    ReplyDelete
  25. OH, i see he did a side deal off of ebay

    ReplyDelete
  26. All of you price complaining goofballs don't seem to understand simple market value and demand. Maybe each of you should sell your house for 50% of it's actual market value so some other price complaining goofball does not spew discontent about it. Something is worth what it will bring. By posting his stuff here, you are helping him get his asking price. I am sure he is grateful.

  27. KL is probably behind some of the anonymous sniping remarks against matrix, still being pissed off from his earlier hissy fit. I have seen this pattern on other forums as well.

  29. i have a jp8 and a a6 , the jp8 blows away the a6 in every aspect of sound.
one more thing: i have a groove midi interface in it which are actually the Best interfaces for the jp8, NOT the encore ones !

( the groove one offers multipart, midi-controller of the complete panel, bulkdump etc etc)
wouldn't sell mine ,not even for 5000€
    sunny pedaal
